Help: justification for Linux PDC vs Windows...
Hello, My IT department has implemented a samba PDC and now we are taking flack for it. Can anyone help me out with some good justifications for doing it this way vs the Microsoft way? Have a meeting about it in a short while... We wanted to do it because Linux is more secure and more stable. But there may be other good reasons and it would be good to know them. Or maybe it would be better

Mac Machines taking over Master Browser
For some reason the Macintosh machines on our LAN have started taking over as master browser without actually providing. Mostly these are Leopard machines, and one Tiger machine. We had OS Level set to 255 and that does not seem to make a difference. corrupt files... oplocks?
Suddenly in the past week we have been having users who share excel files via our Samba complain that the file has become corrupt, and also some database files (Orcad .tdb database files). Fortunately there has in each instance been a good copy in the .recycler... so far. I came across some docs and threads in the net about oplocks. I did find an error in the samba log: [2008/04/14 10:19:05,

creating a static route (SUSE 10)
Hi, We have a shorewall firewall running on SUSE 10. We have three nic''s, Lan, DMZ and Internet. We also have a Cisco Pix 506e. We moved from sending all our traffic through the pix to using the Suse box yesterday. The PIX is in the DMZ, with a connection to the LAN switch, the idea being that VPN users can connect to the pix to the lan. The Pix is on the 10.0.1.x subnet, the lan is

Changing Host Name
Thanks to all of you who are answering my dumb questions about my new CentOS instgallation. I modified /etc/hosts, as the hostname man page seemed to suggest, and rebooted. The hostname is still localhost. I want to change it to jjb-centos. I also want to change the domain name to abilitiessoft.com Thanks, John -- John J. Xen GPL PV Drivers, Windows 2003 unplanned shutdown
Hi, I''ve recently started using the GPL PV Drivers (0.9.10) for a pair of test machines, one XP and one 2003. XP works beautifully: Thank you for the development efforts. 2003 works almost as well, with one exception. When I either xm reboot or xm shutdown and subsequently restart the virtual machine, at first login I get this dialogue: The system has restarted after an unplanned

DRb server & aaf gem
I''m having problems getting the DRb server running with the aaf gem. I tried it with the plugin installed in my application, and it worked. I suspect the problem has something to do with the startup scripts expecting certain files to be in certain relative file paths. Any insights are appreciated, and maybe if you have time you can update the wiki document :) Thanks for a great

to AD or not to AD
Greetings folks, I'm currently using the latest samba 3.x versions but my servers are in an NT4 domain which has a trust relationship with an AD in mixed mode. This has worked flawlessly for the past few years (I started with samba 2.x series). I am heavily considering getting rid of the domain and just moving my servers into the AD itself. Are there any pitfalls I should be wary of in

writing pid file earlier
I''m using god* to monitor my mongrels. God looks at pid files to know the status of the cluster. It seems as though mongrel does not write a pid file until it has loaded the entire rails/project environment, which in my case, takes upwards of 90 seconds. Meanwhile, god is freaking out because it thinks that there aren''t mongrels running, and it tries to start them. Thankfully I

SMB/CIFS vs DFS
Hello, I am running Mandrake 8.0 I am installing & upgrading to Samba 3.0.28 I just finished reading IBM's Redbook "Open Your Windows with Samba on Linux" (redp3780). I'd like to know, what is the best configuration between SMB/CIFS & DFS, in a Linux (servers) & Windows (clients/workstations) network. Even though I read the Redbook, it still not clear as to which
