order transfers by file size
Is it possible to have rsync order transfers by file size (smallest files first) ? Would it be a big patch ? Thanks Viki

rsync based on checksum only
Is it possible to tell rsync *not* to use file names, date stamps, etc and only use the checksum for deciding if a file is the same? the remote machine "normalizes" a set of file names to remove all punctuation marks and forces all file names to lower case. The files themselves are unchanged. --checksum looks promising but it does not say anything about file names: -c, --checksum

SAMBA under window?
Hi, I am thinking a network configuration where a SAMBA server is installed in a window machine so that the web server on that window machine can talk to linux devices. Is it possible, or it is a stupid idea? Thank you. Kind Regards, Jim

nouveau xorg.conf documentation
I'm trying to get started with nouveau. I have it compiled, I have it installed, but I'm having trouble working out the xorg.conf file. My system has 3 video cards; one is a single DVI out, two are dual DVI out. From the messages in the xorg log files, nouveau expects config for DVI-I-0 and DVI-I-1, and so on. Going from the nvidia blob is not as easy as changing nvidia to nouveau;

A simple stand-alone scenario but "public" share doesn´t work
Dear list, For a simple home-network i recently installed Debian Etch on an extra machine to act as server. It stores my mail, it acts as webserver, firewall, dns-, dhcp- and database-server. All of these services are running like a charm. The only thing left is to get samba running. Well, it is running, but to get it running how i want it to is a different matter i suppose, for i am quite

Samba not seeing any interfaces
I've built samba for an embedded mips platform. Since this is an embedded platform, it's possible that some critical file that samba needs is missing but stracing the daemons doesn't reveal anything strange. It's running 2.4.34 kernel. Samba is failing to find any interfaces. [2000/01/02 10:55:01, 3] nmbd/nmbd.c:main(759) Opening sockets 137 [2000/01/02 10:55:01, 10]

AD integration - Administrator can log in but no one else can
I have an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server that I am trying to get integrated into the company AD. The global AD administrator with the username Administrator can log in and access the shares on the samba box. No other user, even users with Administrator privileges, can. check_ntlm_password: authentication for user [Administrator] -> [Administrator] -> [WIKI\Administrator] succeeded

strange permission denied problem
I built an embedded box which uses mount.cifs to mount network shares. I've shipped several of these and all are working fine except for one, which gives me permission denied on certain files: root@Mnemosyne:~/mnt/bgrp1/c/Ballance Group Folders/Scully/Client Photos-Scully# cat "Office Pics 002.jpg" > /dev/null cat: Office Pics 002.jpg: Permission denied

Old samba client
I'm trying to put together an embedded box that will act as a samba client. All it needs to do is to mount Windows shares read-only. It needs to support WinXP and Vista. I need to be able to log in to the box via ssh, and then use smbclient or something similar to "sniff" the shared drives, and then mount them RO for purposes of remote backup. I am looking at an embedded

Small Files/Load Average Information
Hi, I have been noticing some serious load averages occurring when users are browsing or using directories with a large number of files. A case in point is our Sage users. Sage is a nasty program and spits out three small files into a spool directory every time something is printed and does not clear them out. This means that the spool directories rapidly fill with tiny files and by the end of

I'm trying to log into a problem server. The server is running an old kernel - 2.6.10 - and samba 3.0.25C. When I try to mount a share from another server running samba 3.0.26b, I get: root@Lethe:/tmp/log/samba# mount.cifs //kahn/yan /tmp/x --verbose -o user=xxx,pass=yyy,ip=10.8.0.1 parsing options: user=xxx,pass=yyy,ip=10.8.0.1 ip address 10.8.0.1 override specified ip address specified

AD logins fail
I migrated my config to a new server, and now logins against the AD server are failing. If I try the correct password, I get: check_ntlm_password: Authentication for user [yans] -> [yans] FAILED with error NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER But if I try with a wrong password I get: check_ntlm_password: Authentication for user [yans] -> [yans] FAILED with error NT_STATUS_WRONG_PASSWORD Where do

XP Home and samba
I built a small embedded samba server based on Samba 3.0.26b. I tested it locally with XP Pro running in a vmware VM. All worked fine, so I shipped it. Turns out the person using it is running XP Home. Here's her note: I have restarted the computer and waited ten minutes and still nothing. All that comes up is the mshome under the Microsoft Windows Network. So it looks like all

Samba 3.5.6 and Win 7 issues
I have a client that recently upgraded from Win XP to Win 7. They were seeing odd slowdowns and poor performance, so we upgraded to Samba 3.5.6 and enabled win 7 support "max protocol = SMB2". They contacted me this morning with a report of more strange behavior, names the inability to access newly created folders with the message "file is too large for file system". There

Help
Hello there I have a question about rsync, and some options. I have 10 servers here that all need data from one machine. It's a LARGE amount of files all pictures and files and such, now every time I rsync the directory over it takes like hours to create the file list. Now I'm fine with that, but I need to know if it can save the file list it generates and uses it over again for the

Initial backup prior to daily rsync backups
I have a few CentOS 5.3 servers out at remote sites that connect over a satellite link (a painfully slow satellite link). There's a time period in the wee hours of the morning when the satellite provider doesn't stiff me for bandwidth, and when the link is generally idle, where I want to use rsync to back up files to my local server. I've got rsync working in in combination with

cross-subnet browsing problems
I'm trying to set up cross-subnet browsing using Samba on a Linux box and a Sparc UltraEnterprise with Win95 and NT Workstation clients. I'm using the Sparc as the domain master and also as the WINS server on the 108 subnet. The Linux box is the local master on the 46 subnet. Both are running Samba 1.9.17alpha4. I can see the conversation between the two samba servers and the browse
