I changed smb.conf, but nothing seems to happen!
Hello, *
After some good advice from the list, I now have my workgroup visible. Next
problem.
I click on it from my win98 station (yes, it is old; I even have a w95
workstation somewhere :-) ) and I get "can't find share name".
Now I look in the samba logs, and I see that it is looking
for /usr/local/samba/netlogon, which doesn't exist. Oops, error!
The netlogon happens to

Does anyone know why sometimes a PDC appears in the Network neigborhood, and sometimes it doesn't?
The subject says it all, I think. At home I have a PDC (Linux with Samba), and
I have Win98 and Win 95(!) clients. And sometimes the domain name (workgroup
name) is visble in the Network neigborhood, and sometimes it is not. I also
got the impression that placing a link in the file NETHOOD makes a
difference, but I am not sure yet. The PDC is visible, that is, it can be
PINGed, I can connect

Getting messages "failed to stat" only in cron execution
Hello, *
When I am running a backup bash file under cron, I get lots of messages like
the following:

en poster/losse foto's medewerkers/oude foto's medewerkers die we willen

I still don't understand it-- what is the relation between cause and effect?
I have posted more messages, essentially to the same effect... had quite a few
good answers, but somehow I seem to be missing something ... :-(
Well, I told you already about the workgroup DAARO, which refused to show
up... I got some suggestions, and, indeed, there it was! I could even log in
to it.
And then, next morning, I started up my test network, ... no DAARO. However,
after a restart

backup to NTFS USB disk
Hello, *
I am setting up a backup on a Linux system with Windows XP workstations. The
backup goes to three alternating usb drives, each of which is NTFS formatted.
The disks should be virtually identical but they do not seem to be.
First, my mount command is this (I edited a bit for brevity)
mount -t ntfs-3g -o locale=nl_NL.iso-8859-1,silent /dev/disk/by-id/usb-DiskA \
/mnt/tmp ||
mount -t

inconsistency?
I am less than familiar with Microsoft, so I guess it might be an FAQ...
if I click on "network neighborhood" which reveals a Samba server, it shows a
list of all shares. If I click on a share, I get a message "cannot find share
name". Somehow this does not sound logical to me... what is wrong?

my next question: no accesss
Even if I can find back a share, (which I sometimes can, for no clear reason)
then the next message I get is "no access". I suspect this may be a Linux
config thing, but I am still unable to figure what ownership rights I should
give to the shares: root:root or someuser:users or samba:samba (this
user:group does not exist as yet). What is meant by no access: is it a
Windows or a

OK. there I am again!
Well, I read quite a few documents; thanks for pointing them out... And I
got "it" working...
The most important point I learned is P_a_t_i_e_n_c_e! You really have to wait
a few minutes after having modified your smb.conf and restarted samba. And
you have plenty of time to reboot your client, I am not sure whether you
really need this, but anyway... it really takes quite some

pre-release version of backgroundrb available now from svn
Hi,
A pre-release version of backgroundrb is available now from svn.
Download it from here:
http://svn.devjavu.com/backgroundrb/branches/version099/
Since this release marks significant migration from existing
practices, i intend to keep trunk untouched for a while.
There are no install scripts, but you should copy "backgroundrb" file
from script directory of plugin to script

Windows and Ubuntu and Windows and......
Hi folks
I am a complete noob to this Ubuntu stuff, so please forgive me if I ask a dumb Question, or ramble on....
I have been told that I am trying to run before I can crawl, but here goes.....
I have a few old Windows programs that are no longer supported or run correctly on Vista or Win7, but work happily in XP. These are used for my business and are mission critical. The two main ones are

file corruption
Hi,
I am backing up about 500G of data from a linux-based NAS to a USB
hard drive attached to a router (rt-n16 with tomatousb firmware). Both
NAS and the router have rsync-3.0.9. The router is running rsync in
the daemon mode. To test the set up, I rsync'd the files to the empty
USB hard drive, then back to the NAS in a new temp dir. Afterwards, I
did a local "diff -r" on the NAS.

Template Nodes considered harmful
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hi Russ, Digant, *!
Several times on the IRC channel I noticed people having problems getting to
grips with the interaction of scopes when using template nodes[1]. Typically
this looks thus:
| node genericwebserver { stuff }
|
| node ''web01.example.com'' inherits genericwebserver {
| $influence_genericwebserver =

maybe I should explain what i am after!
I have sent a few messages already, but perhaps I should start from the other
side, and give a clear indication of what I want to achieve. Well, here
goes...
I am working for a volunteer organization. They have quite a few Windows
workstations, most W98, and a few XPs (and, currently, one Vista). There is
one Linux server, running Samba, and holding all shares. It also acts as the
PDC, and

How do you clean up your app folder to place onto the server? I want to

This seems entirely superfluous, I don't think a kernel build will go
anywhere if either is missing.

Know who's logged in
Hi all,
For those of you people that use Agents (with Agentlogin, not
AgentCallbackLogin) on a call center, I have this need: when the agent
logs in, a channel keeps running all the time that the agent is logged
in to receive the incoming calls. How do I know which agent logged in
(code)? Right now, if I query the login channel, there is no information
about which agent is logged on:
