netbios name resolution inside linux via samba?
Hello,
I have setup up samba on my pc and everything is working great. I
setup my writable shared folders I can view other servers/pcs on the
network using gnome but sometimes I need to debug some networking
issues and I would like to for example:
ping myserver4
ping: unknown host myserver4
Is there a way to setup up linux to use samba for name resolution?
The only way I know right now is to add

can't resolve NETBios names
My LAN has a single linux/samba server as a PDC/file server, and several
windows workstations. The workstations get their IP addresses from a Linksys
cable router DHCP server.
I can't get the linux machine to resolve the NETBios names of the windows
machines.

printer drivers - Add Printer Wizard disabled
I'm following along in the guide, trying to make printer drivers
available from Samba. But when I right-click on a printer in Windows
XP and select the "properties" tab, it's disabled:

So how do I enable this so the client can upload the drivers? So far I

Moving / Copying files inside server across different shares
Hi guys!
when I move a file inside a share (for example, from
\\server\myshare\dir1 to \\server\myshare\dir2), Samba manages it in
order to make the move inside the server. That is, its very fast
because the file never gets downloaded to the client.
My problem is that when moving a file across different shares, it gets
first downloaded to the client and then copied back to the new
location. For

mac osx charset on linux
Hey there,
After searching for quite some time I'm finally just going to ask the people
who know :)
I'm having trouble when listing the files on a samba share that's hosted on
a Mac OS X 10.4 server. The client is an Kubuntu Dapper Linux machine.
This happens only when using smbmount (smbfs) and not when I use Konqueror
with smb:// . The problem is that files with certain characters

how to view disk labels used by a user for his/her disk shares?
I have a samba pdc.
I would like to automatically assign at next logon a disk share with a
particular letter that is the same for a group of users (such as L:\).
How can I see with samba and/or windows tools what are currently the disk
labels used by this group of users so that I can choose accordingly?
And in general, is there any smb.conf or other config option that lets me
set a unique disk

doc files with attribut r for user
Hi,
i upgraded from Debian sarge to etch, so from samba 3.0.14a-3 to 3.0.24
When someone creates/modify a file the user attribut is set to r
(instead of rwx) so the next time a user opens the file is's on read only.
What can i do so that the file keeps the attribut rwx for the owner ?
Another question : the file has the rigthts : -r--rwx--- but although
the user is member of the group

Getting Owner of Files on Mounted Windows Share
Hello everyone,
I have an obscure issue that I have been so far unable to find the
answer to. I have successfully mounted a windows NTFS file share using
samba via the following command:
mount -t smbfs -o username=<USERNAME>,workgroup=<WORKGROUP>
//winserver/winpath /mnt/win
It mounts just fine but performing an ls -al command shows my user (or
"root") as the owner of all

NetBIOS name resolution from Linux
Hi all,
I set up a Samba server (version 3.0.24) names "Lamp" on a Debian Etch
distribution. It provides a "guest" (guest ok = yes, guest only = yes,
security = SHARE) access to a "share" directory, which works fine.
Indeed, I can access \\lamp\share from a Windows machine (named
"Ginger") without issuing a password.
I can also ping the Linux machine

User connexions stats
Dear samba users/developpers,
I would like to make stats on user desktop login/logout and I ask myself
if it's possible to do this on the samba PDC. But it doesn't seems to be
so easy.
Maybe parsing logs or using smbstatus?
Is there anyone who did something like this and who can share he's
knowledge ;)
Or maybe it's ... impossible to get accurate datas about this, I don't

XP Home and samba
I built a small embedded samba server based on Samba 3.0.26b. I tested
it locally with XP Pro running in a vmware VM.
All worked fine, so I shipped it.
Turns out the person using it is running XP Home. Here's her note:
I have restarted the computer and waited ten minutes and still nothing.
All that comes up is the mshome under the Microsoft Windows Network.
So it looks like all

Multiple mount instead of remount?
I'm having issues trying to remount any shares using samba.
Super Short version
mount -o remount /some_windows_share creates a duplicate mount instead
of properly remounting.
Full details...
I have many shares served off of NT4 boxes, mounted via samba on a
linux box (RHEL 4).
Since long dormant (>12 hour) shares from one server in particular
always have problems for a few seconds when

I've seen more and more occurrences of the following error (other people
have different password servers) on the web.
I submitted this question before, but it was never resolved. I've even
tried changing the underlying file system (from clustered vxfs to ext3)
and I still see the error.

SID-UID mapping issue on Samba 3.0.4 in an AD Domain
I have problems with SID to UID mapping using winbind on a FreeBSD 5.2/Samba

as a member server of a Win2k domain controller. I use heimdal-0.6.1 for
kerberos.
I would like my XP machines in the domain to use the share with the user
accounts
defined in Active Directory.
At a first glance it seems to work: the connection to the share succeeds
without a

Roaming profiles and case sensitivity
Hi,
Yesterday I found big problems concerning my roaming profiles. They seem
to work on some computers where they are always used, on some other the
did not load properly (i.e. a default profile was loaded instead).
After some debugging with userenv.log I found the very strange problem:
case sensitivity for ntuser.dat!:
