CPU consumption by samba
Hi,
I'm having strange performance problems with samba and an application written
with VisualFox Pro.
This application is entirely installed in a Windows share and it has a hystory
of strange phenomenons.
Initially it ran fast on an old NT server (but that server has been replaced).
It has strange performance problems with Windows 2000 Server: it runs fast
with some servers and slow with

Changing Windows passwords
Hi all,
Is there a way to use the "encrypt passwords" and the "passwd chat" programs
simultaneously? smb.conf(5) doesn't mention anything about them being
mutually exclusive, yet when I run testparm on the smb.conf file, I get:
ERROR: the 'passwd chat' script [...] expects to use the old
plaintext password via the %o substitution. With encrypted

File browser doesn't remember last directory over Dfs
Hi,
I have encountered some strange behaviour after upgrading to
3.0.12 on FreeBSD 4.10 file servers.
Normally when users on windows apps use the file browser to select
a file it remembers the selected directory between invocations, so
that, for example, they can easily read in multiple files from
the same directory, or if they click on Save As... it takes
them to the directory where they

cant rename directories on NT
Everything is working perfect on win95 but from NT4:
I can create, delete and rename files
I can create and delete directories
Problem:
I can't rename created directories from the NT4 workstations on the network. And
this is a big problem since NT4 creates a "New Folder" and asks you to type in
the name you want.
I have a 2.0.6 distribution on a SGI Origin200 Irix6.4 server. I

changing kickoff time
Hello everybody,
we moved our samba server to a new machine. This included changing the
samba version from 3.024 to 3.4.2 and changing the OS from Linux to
Opensolaris.
Samba was compiled from scratch. Passdb Backend is tdb.
After the upgrade everything works fine......except:
Some users can not login, due to an expired account.
Further investigation showed that the "Kickoff Time"

Show stopper - 2nd cry for help
<Long Post, sorry!>
Folks, I have a really nasty problem preventing me from migrating a bunch of
NetWare 5 servers to Samba--attempts to copy large (> 2MB+) files to any
samba share results in an error. To clarify what I mean by "error":
1. I attempt to copy, using explorer, a 2MB+ file to any samba share.
2. A 30 second or so pause occurs (copying this file to any other

OS X 10.4.11 Tiger cannot write to Samba 4.5.12 file server with vfs_fruit enabled
Hello, thought I’d post here before opening up an issue on Bugzilla, just
in case…
I’m setting up a combination Samba 4.5.12/Netatalk 3.1.11 file server on
Debian Stretch (kernel version 4.9.0-4-amd64), servicing a network
containing Windows, macOS, and OS X Tiger 10.4.11 systems. As I understand
it, vfs_fruit is necessary for proper interoperation with Netatalk 3, so I
have that enabled on my

dptr_create: returned 9: Error - all new dirptrs in use ?
Hi,
I get this error message in the log for a Win98 client which is regularly
scanning a directory on the share. When this happens the client no longer
can access any data in the shares (security=share), only the toplevel
directory structure of a share is still accessible. This seems to be a new
problem in 2.0.5/6pre (not sure if it already happened for 2.0.4). Any hints?
Franz.

" ERROR! Out of file structures" with smbd, and Arcserve IT on sm b share
Hi again,
I was previously writing for a problem with Arcserve IT and Samba (with
linux). The connection drops after 15 minutes.
Continuing to understand what's happening, I discovered the following
message in the logs:
[1999/06/01 14:42:08, 0] smbd/files.c:file_new(85)
ERROR! Out of file structures
Immediatly I ran into the samba code to try to understand the cause of the
problem.

File transfer corruption (NULL characters)
I've got a couple of Solaris 7 boxes that are running samba 2.2.0. When
I try to copy text files from a windows 2000 client to the server, the
resulting file is filled with all NULL characters. I tried copying the
same file to a NT server's share and there was no corruption.
When copying to the solaris share, the windows 2000 client eventually
gives the following error:

I'm having a problem with files locking so that every time the are
