inconsistency?
I am less than familiar with Microsoft, so I guess it might be an FAQ...
if I click on "network neighborhood" which reveals a Samba server, it shows a
list of all shares. If I click on a share, I get a message "cannot find share
name". Somehow this does not sound logical to me... what is wrong?

Getting messages "failed to stat" only in cron execution
Hello, *
When I am running a backup bash file under cron, I get lots of messages like

net use h: /home syntax?
I am setting up a Win98 client to work with my samba server. I can log in on
the domain allright, but then I would expect to get access to my home
directory by issuing (in a DOS box):
NET USE H: /HOME
For some reason I am told that the syntax is not correct. On the other hand
net use /? gives exactly this as one of the options. Does anyone know what is
wrong with it?

I changed smb.conf, but nothing seems to happen!
Hello, *
After some good advice from the list, I now have my workgroup visible. Next
problem.
I click on it from my win98 station (yes, it is old; I even have a w95
workstation somewhere :-) ) and I get "can't find share name".
Now I look in the samba logs, and I see that it is looking
for /usr/local/samba/netlogon, which doesn't exist. Oops, error!
The netlogon happens to

maybe I should explain what i am after!
I have sent a few messages already, but perhaps I should start from the other
side, and give a clear indication of what I want to achieve. Well, here
goes...
I am working for a volunteer organization. They have quite a few Windows
workstations, most W98, and a few XPs (and, currently, one Vista). There is
one Linux server, running Samba, and holding all shares. It also acts as the
PDC, and

backup to NTFS USB disk
Hello, *
I am setting up a backup on a Linux system with Windows XP workstations. The
backup goes to three alternating usb drives, each of which is NTFS formatted.
The disks should be virtually identical but they do not seem to be.
First, my mount command is this (I edited a bit for brevity)
mount -t ntfs-3g -o locale=nl_NL.iso-8859-1,silent /dev/disk/by-id/usb-DiskA \
/mnt/tmp ||
mount -t

OK. there I am again!
Well, I read quite a few documents; thanks for pointing them out... And I
got "it" working...
The most important point I learned is P_a_t_i_e_n_c_e! You really have to wait
a few minutes after having modified your smb.conf and restarted samba. And
you have plenty of time to reboot your client, I am not sure whether you
really need this, but anyway... it really takes quite some

I still don't understand it-- what is the relation between cause and effect?
I have posted more messages, essentially to the same effect... had quite a few
good answers, but somehow I seem to be missing something ... :-(
Well, I told you already about the workgroup DAARO, which refused to show
up... I got some suggestions, and, indeed, there it was! I could even log in
to it.
And then, next morning, I started up my test network, ... no DAARO. However,

file corruption
Hi,
I am backing up about 500G of data from a linux-based NAS to a USB
hard drive attached to a router (rt-n16 with tomatousb firmware). Both
NAS and the router have rsync-3.0.9. The router is running rsync in
the daemon mode. To test the set up, I rsync'd the files to the empty
USB hard drive, then back to the NAS in a new temp dir. Afterwards, I
did a local "diff -r" on the NAS.

Bug#447795: xen-utils-3.0.3-1: [CVE-2007-3919] xenmon.py / xenbaked insecure file accesss
Package: xen-utils-3.0.3-1
Version: 3.0.3-0-3
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole
Xen versions 3.x, and 3.1 contain a tool for processing Xen trace
buffer information.
This tool uses the static file /tmp/xenq-shm insecurely allowing
a local user to truncate any local file when xenbaked or xenmon.py
are invoked by root.
Sample session:
# setup.

Updating Samba AD from 4.1 to latest stable
Hi All,
After reading the list for a while I have a question myself.
I have the task of upgrading a couple of systems and one of them is the
office AD infrastructure from a Samba-4.1 installation to the latest
stable version.
I already did a concept of proof by incrementally compiling versions
4.2/3/4/5/etc to the then latest stable 4.10 and it seemed to work out
OK but was a lot of work.
I had a

Missing files on Windows client side.
In a directory with approximately 6000 files, several files are missing on
the Windows side.
If I check the directory on Unix (AIX) they are all there.
As far as I can see there's nothing strange with this files en I can't see
any connection between the missing files.
It looks like it's randomly.
A few examples of missing files:

upgrade 4.0.0rc4 to 4.1
Hi there
I downloaded the latest stable release, and I can run ./configure, make,
make install after installing quite a few dependancies, but it does not
replace the current samba? Please excuse my ignorance, as I dont know
how to tell it to install to the same location as 4.0.0 rc4 as I dont
actually know where 4.0.0.rc4 is intalled in the first place. 4.1 seems
to install to

Does anyone know why sometimes a PDC appears in the Network neigborhood, and sometimes it doesn't?
The subject says it all, I think. At home I have a PDC (Linux with Samba), and
I have Win98 and Win 95(!) clients. And sometimes the domain name (workgroup
name) is visble in the Network neigborhood, and sometimes it is not. I also
got the impression that placing a link in the file NETHOOD makes a
difference, but I am not sure yet. The PDC is visible, that is, it can be
PINGed, I can connect

"Wbinfo -u" get user account sucessfully but "getent passwd" fails
Hi everybody,
I got a problem here with my Samba ADS member server. It functions as a
file server and works for a long time. A few weeks ago our Active
Directory domain controller failed due to power outage. We fixed it and
now an employee reports that he could not use the samba file server any
more. I restarted samba service and did the following testing:
1) getent passwd <thisUser>

more or less pager
R-users,
(forgive my return adres)
I've been breaking my head why R---which i find fabulous, by the
way---does not pipe interactive output through a pager (more or less),
like it does with help(), or like GNU Octave does with arrays with more
than terminal height rows.
Maybe it is my installation (Debian/GNU Linux). Maybe it is my
configuration, but i don't think so because with

Testing subnets with samba[Scanned]
OK before i start, this was something i was just testing while everyone was in training this afternoon. I have never had to deal with subnets before as we only have a few users, but decided to do a little bit of messing around to gain some experience.
Basically we have one server (mandriva 2006) running samba, it has two 4 port ethernet cards in it but only utilitising one port from each card.
