what to do in worst case scenario: samba pdc not available
Hi,
my question no really concerns 100% to Samba but since I use Samba ...
I use Samba 3.0.13 as an PDC and have about 40 WinXp Pro Clients.
I was wondering what happens if the WinXP Pro Clients won?t have any
connection to the Samba Server anymore. Maybye due an error in the
network or the PDC died for some reason.
Is there any way to quickly change the clients profile to a local
profile? I

lock account after failed logins
Hi,
does anybody know how I can lock down an samba domain account after a
certain amount of failed logins?
I thought I heard that this issue will be solved with Samba 3?
Thanks a lot and
best regards

deployment of software
I have Samba and about 40 WinXP Clientes running.
Now I?m trying to find a way to deploy software (for example
updates of E-Mail Client, Windows Patches) to my Clients.
I was playing around with AutoIt and some "switch-user-tools" for
windows, which really works but also is kind of complicated and time
consuming.
In my environment, every user got his own Logonscript on the Linuxserver

Only BUILTIN accounts working on 2k3 AD
Hi, I have partially got Samba on Fedora Core 1 talking to AD on 2k3.
I've been following Samba 3 by example, (which is excellent btw -
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/)
I can access my shares by "administrator", I guess becuase it's a built in
account. I have other groups on the AD server, and I also have users :-)
Does anyone know where I may have mucked

virtualizing Windows in Cetnos
Here is what i am looking to do. i have a server SBS 2k3 machine. I
want to load linux on it then virtualize the SBS server inside the linux
installation. I would then be able to compress backup just the sbs
virtual file instead of screwing with the backup programs inside of
windows(even symantec's and yosemitie's stuff leaves much to be
desired). What are my options both free and

Samba 3.0 + LDAP as PDC
At the risk of having my inbox flooded with another 10,000 Emails from
"Microsoft" proporting the "latest security update"..
Now that smb3.0 is out and about, I'd really like to use it for
authenticating windows users / PDC (With BDC in the plans)
My problem is that there seems to be little to zero up to date
documentation on how to integrate Samba and LDAP, the most I

Removing Samba+LDAP, replacing W2k3+AD
Four years ago, I migrated our network from Windows NT based servers to
Linux, Samba+LDAP based setups. This setup has worked fine. Last year,
we replaced our Exchange 5.5 server - the last "real" Windows server -
with Scalix. This last decision has come back to bite me.
Several new "thingys" that the boss wants, among other things, are
forcing me to implement Exchange

A gmane mystery
I've been collecting redhat.fedora from gmane for several years,
but about a week ago I found that while I could read gmane newsgroups
I was unable to post to them - that is, my posts did not appear.
I was able to post to gmane.test, and could read these posts.
So I assume there is no problem with my From: or other headers.
I take it that the gmane.linux.centos.general is in fact

Problems with XP clients and profiles
Hi all
I recently built a samba box to try and straighten up a nasty setup that my
predecessors had running. The old setup was a Win2k box running AD, which I
know very little about. All of the clients are running WinXP; some of them
were authenticating via the Win2k box, some were just using local accounts.
In either case, all files were being stored on the client machines, the
server was

Newsgroup - another try?
As nobody seems to answer my request, I simply post it again.
Is there any reason why the r-help-mailinglist should not be converted to a
newsgroup?
These were the advantages of a newsgroup I mentioned earlier:
-) you can easily search the archives
-) the discussion is faster (I experience that the R-mailinglist has a lag
of about 1 to 2 hours (not for everyone!!!). When I ask a question, I get

You've got it wrong, those are not servers, those are newsgroups. You need to
go to Google (for example) and search for something like "free news server".

A question about samba and quote
Hi,
We've a Samba server as purely fileserver in AD windows enviroment with
a 2k3 server as bdc.
Our goal is implement quote to manage disk space usage on samba server.
Is it supported by samba ?! if not, which is the best way to approach it ?
I did a little search on google but I've not found a clear way or
documentation about it, so any advice is really appreciated.
thx in advance,

Difference between a[[i]] and a[i]
I'm sure I've read about the difference between a[[i]] and a[i] in R, but I
cannot recall what I read. Even more disturbing is the fact that I don't
know how to search the newsgroup for this. All the different combinations I
tried were declared not to be valid search syntax.

they differ? I mean objects in

R-help in a newsgroup
Hi,
I find a lot of the R-help email traffic overloads my inbox. My IT
managers are not really happy for me to be subscribed to several
high-traffic email lists. I don't want to lose my contact with the
R-help emails, so I'm having to consider various ways of handling the
traffic. Anyhow, I'm wondering how many people on the R-help email
list would prefer that most of the traffic
