vfat / ftruncate problem
I recently added a 60Gig HD to my little linux server at home with the intention of sharing it via Samba to all my PCs which run Windows 98SE. I really want to use vfat file system on it.
The server is running Mandrake 8.1, so kernel 2.4.something, and the Samba that came with it.
Much to my disappointment I quickly discovered poor performance copying files to it, the copy is like slow to get

update: sys_ftruncate call lasting 17 hours on ext3 filesystem from mutt
In August I reported a problem with the sys_ftruncate call that caused
me to reboot my machine. I didn't see any responses to it then on the
ext3 list, and the problem is now recurring, so I thought I'd try
again. I don't think I've rebooted since the last problem.
In the last few days it hasn't taken as long as 17 hours, but it has
sometimes taken unusual and uncomfortable

TDB functionality document
Hi,
Does someone know a document which explains the TDB structure.
functionalites, and format of the TDB files etc.
I need to understand why some of the TDBs like messages.tdb, unexpected.tdb,
brlock if not read_only, locking.tdb, session.tdb, wins.tdb are called with
TDB_CLEAR_IF_FIRST tdb flags.
Why some TDBs are opend with O_RDWR|O_CREAT flags viz. gencache.tdb,

Can vista client can negotiage smb2 protocol with the samba server?
Hi,
I have a specific question about the SMB 2 (or CIFS 2 version protocol).
SMB2 was introduced with Microsoft Vista and is a redesign of the older SMB
protocol. (http://wiki.ethereal.com/SMB2)
Is current samba 3.0.xx release (or samba 4 release) support this protocol
when vista client tries to establish session with the samba server.
What are the features or advantages of getting this

Not able to add domain users to local groups
Hi,
I was able to successfully configure my samba server 3.0.24 running on
Debian Linux server as "Domain Member Server" to W2k3 server.
Command "net rpc testjoin" indicates that the join is a success.
As mentioned in the document
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/NetCommand.html
Under the section
"Nested Group Support"

2gb limit & weird filenames
Hello,
I'm trying to set up a samba server for a friend who has a mac. He's running
OSX, version 10.2. He's got some really big video editing files that are well
in excess of 2gb. We're trying to back these up to the samba server, but it
quits right around 2gb. That seems to be a magical number. This is with
version 2.2.3 of Samba, and Linux-Mandrake 8.2, ext3 file system.

PDC as wins server
We have a Samba server which acts mainly as file server, but we want it to
resolve host names for local machines. I have written some IP-hostname lines
both in /etc/hosts and /etc/samba/lmhosts, and I have "wins support = yes"
in smb.conf, but then from a Windows client I try to ping one of those hosts
and it can't resolve the address.
I have tried some combinations of

sys_ftruncate call lasting 17 hours on ext3 filesystem from mutt
Several times recently my "mutt" email program has looped for
hours at a time in the middle of a sys_ftruncate call. This happens
when I use the "$" command to write changes out to my mailbox. It
does eventually return from the call and everything seems to have
worked ok. But in the meantime the CPU is pegged, $MAIL
is locked so I can't receive new mail, and signals to

CentOS7 and NFS
Hi Orion,
no, I still have this problem. I delay working on it as I the latest
updates have not been installed on the server and on the client. I'll
work again on this problem as soon as possible.
Thanks Charles for your detailed information on how to track this
problem. I'll check all these metrics.
I have several clients for this nfs server and the problem seems only to

Monitoring FS operations
Greetings All,
Without going into the specific reasons why I need to do so, is anyone
aware of a method (or tool) of watching real-time, human-readable (or
system call print) of ext3 filesystem operations on a mounted, active
filesystem?
Excuse me if this is a duplicate question but I was unable to find any
similar ones in the archives.
Thanks in advance!

HP-UX/AIX sendfile patches.
I have a fix for the sendfile.c code for HP-UX - length not properly
specified prior to call.
I've also added code to support the AIX send_file() function and
configure.in code to check for AIX specific send_file API and sets
AIX_SENDFILE_API if successful.
Could you consider this patch for 3.0.11?
I also sent a web/cgi.c patch for "struct var" last week with respect to

Problem With Big File Transfer on Windows Client
Dear All,
I use Samba 2.2.12 on an embedded linux system as a server and a windows xp
(with SP2) pc as a client directly connected together with a cross-over network
cable (I have also tested with a normal network cable).
Everything works well such as connection or small files transfers but we have a
huge problem when we try to transfer a big file (~700 MB) from the client

kjournald hang on ext3 to ext3 copy
All,
I am running into a situation in which one of my ext3 filesystems is
getting hung during normal usage. There are three ext3 filesystems on a
CompactFLASH. One is mounted as / and one as /tmp. In my test, I am
copying a 100 MB file from /root to /tmp repeatedly. While doing this
test, I eventually see the copying stop, and any attempts to access /tmp
fail - if I even do ls /tmp the

read/write permissions to a certain drive letter without giving them the
ability to delete other (or thier own) files. Currently I have chmod
1770 permissions (read write, but only owner can delete) and one owner
(the teacher) for all the files, but
