danger in using pdbedit
I would like to be able to change between backends but I'm worried that
my users will encounter trouble loggin in. So I'm looking for
reassurance that my command is ok.
My current configuration is:
passdb backend = ldapsam:ldap://10.10.10.10 smbpasswd guest
I would like to change from ldap to tdbsam. Is this the command to
use:
# pdbedit -i ldapsam:ldap://10.10.10.10 -e tdbsam

question re multiple backends and the 'guest' backend
An inherited system has the following configuration:
passdb backend = ldapsam:ldap://10.10.10.10 smbpasswd guest
What is the purpose of using multiple backends? The smb.conf man page
simply states that each backend will be searched in turn but why would
one ever use such a setup?
Secondly, the man page does not mention the 'guest' backend. To me
such a backend implies that an

DFS redirection to sub-folders beyond share
Hi,
I already posted this to smb-clients, but I believe that is a very low
volume list.
We have a very complicated dfs root. Now I'm not positive that this is
how we should have done things, but it works very well with Windows
clients, so it hasn't been thought about here. This does not work with
smbclient or smbmount. I'm using freshly built smbclient from Samba
3.0.21a.

Why tzdata-2007h [RHEA-2007:0928-05] only for CentOS 2?
I might be stupid and ask an idiot or offensive question, but here it is:
"Why was tzdata-2007h [RHEA-2007:0928-05] only released for CentOS 2, when
upstream has released it for all the versions?"
The guys from X/OS have released it for 5.0 along with the other updates (on
Oct. 9).
Are the "enhancements"... "not important" as long as they're not "security

requesting assistance in samba-samba migration
I have inherited a Samba server and would like to migrate the
installation to a new machine. We are using Samba as a PDC and my
currrent worry is what users will see on their desktop (as well as
other changes?) once they log on to the new server.
As a test I have logged on with my laptop (running WinXP virtually) and
I get a completely blank desktop (with the exception of the trash can).

AD auto-mounting (why does this work?)
I have Samba and Active Directory (Win 2003) integrated whereby I can
login to my Ubuntu station using the credentials of an AD user. I also
have a share automatically mounted based on this username (i.e. share
blah is mounted when user blah logs in).
I am wondering how this can work if I do not have any Kerberos tickets
issued? When I log in I use the 'klist' command and it shows that

domain won't go online
Hi. I'm hoping for some advise/help.
I have a domain that won't seem to go online:
$ wbinfo --online-status
BUILTIN : active connection
MY-HOST : active connection
FOO : no active connection
The log for the domain repeats over and over again:

smbclient: invalid mid from server! ???
Hi,
our backup program regularly invokes smbclient to generate a tar-file
from an NT-Workstation share. What it does is
/usr/samba/bin/smbclient \\\\maclaurin\\maclaurin password -U backup -E -W MATH -d3 -Tc - > maclaurin.tar
Now this is the output:
Client started (version 2.0.6).

smbclient tar problem
Hello all.
I'm using Samba 2.0.7 on Linux, and I've been having a problem I can't
figure out. I was backing up a coworker's machine using the smbclient
tar capability. He's got Win2k. I was looking at the tar file that was
generated, and in some of the deeply nested directories, I'd get stuff
like this:

thousand separator (was RE: weight)
Thank-you Andy!!!!!! That works great now

I've run into this occasionally. My current solution is simply to read
it into Excel, re-format the offending column(s) by unchecking the
"thousand separator" box, and write it back out. Not exactly ideal to
say the least. If anyone can provide a better solution in R, I'm all
ears...

cli_push returned NT_STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT
Hello all,
I'm having a problem with smbclient after an upgrade from 3.0.37 to
3.5.3 (I also tested 3.5.11 and 3.6.0).
The client uses a command similar to:
tar -cz /some/directory | smbclient '\\server_ip\share' -N -c 'put
- "\directory\filename"'
After that the client checks the exit status to determine if the
transfer succeeded or failed.
The server

Problems accessing a file share using kerberos
Hi,
I'm trying to access a file share on what I believe is a netapp server
using kerberos authentication. I've done a kinit and gotten
credentials and then ran:
$ smbclient -U pedrocr //gsb-filer2/pedrocr -k -d10
This actually increased the number of credentials klist shows so looks
good in that regard. Howeever, I got the error:

Samba compatibility with NetAPP filers.
We are running scripts using smbclient to get some data of NetAPP filer and we run into the output below. After doing some digging, I found that there
is a incompatibility between NetAPP Data ONTAP OS and samba. Is this still the case or there is a fix for it. We are running 3.0.10
Any ideas would be great
