Re: samba-3.0.23d, smbpasswd, and "NO PASSWORD" behaviour
Help! (pretty please :)
I'm still having the problem described below with samba-3.0.24.
Here's an excerpt from the smbpasswd man page:
When run by an ordinary user with no options, smbpasswd will prompt
them for their old SMB password and then ask them for their new pass
word twice, to ensure that the new password was typed correctly. No
passwords will be

nufa and missing files
We're using gluster-2.0.1 and a nufa volume comprised of thirteen
subvolumes across thirteen hosts.
We've found today that there are some files in the local filesystem
associated with the subvolume from one of the hosts that are not
being seen in the nufa volume on any gluster client.
I don't know how or when this happened, but now we have to do some
work to get this gluster volume

Why is an extra 'home' dir showing up?
My question is, how come daevid (on XP) sees the following directories:
\\linux\dae51d
\\linux\homes
Shouldn't there just be the home dir only? Why does "\\linux\dae51d"
show up (I assume it's b/c that's who I am logged in as on XP which maps
to linux)? However, the fact that it does show up, shouldn't it be the
actual HOME directory of the linux user account dae51d (as

problem with missing bricks
Gluster-user folks,
I'm trying to use gluster in a way that may be a considered an unusual use
case for gluster. Feel free to let me know if you think what I'm doing
is dumb. It just feels very comfortable doing this with gluster.
I have been using gluster in other, more orthodox configurations, for
several years.
I have a single system with 45 inexpensive sata drives - it's a

Problems with passwords (PR#20895) !!!!
Hello,
I reported problem PR#20895.
So - i use encrypted passwords. All new unix users are appended to
smbpasswd with one script.
Every new user is getting a line like this:
s1077347:2006:NO PASSWORDXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:NO
PASSWORDXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:[NU ]:LCT-00000000:user name
The parameter null passwords is NO. Every user who has not set their
password can login into Samba NT

How do I create a globally accessible directory [partly solved] (XP works/98 doesn't)
I just want a simple, globally accessible directory for anyone on my
LAN. I don't care who they are, who they're logged in as on their
windows machine, I don't care about security (it's my own private
LAN!!!). Why is this so difficult to do? I've looked through the
archives (which by the way, could someone spend a few minutes and put a
SEARCH feature there. Following threads

homes in Samba 3.5
Hello
I know that this is about outdated Samba versions, but I have
to stick with those. And after trying now for days without getting
anywhere I'm looking for help from others.
We used an old Thecus-NAS as fileserver (no domain etc). It uses
a Samba 3.0.26 which works as we want. Now we bought newer
NAS-boxes, but those too use old Samba versions, 3.5.19.
This in itself is not disturbing

Samba won't act as PDC
I have been tasked to be one of the main targets, er, I mean, guys to
facilitate our changeover from a rather aged Novell server to Samba.
My boss set up Samba 2.0.7 (RPM shows "samba-common-2.0.7-4" with an RPM
-q). I am trying to convert it to PDC functionality, and am having
difficulty. In the log I see this:
"smbd/password.c:authorise_login(826) rejected invalid user

domain master browser registration
if i have a host with a particular ip address running as a domain master
browser and registered as such with my wins server, and then i change the
ip address of this host, does the old registration with the wins server
eventually go away so that the new ip address can be registered?
if so, how long should this take?
how would one force the old ip address to be forgotten?

Problem joing a W2KSP1 client to a Samba PDC (2.2.5).
Hi,
I'am running a small samba server at work with 10+ users in the domain (all
of them added with W2KSP1 and 2.2.3 or 2.2.4). I uppgraded to 2.2.5 a while
back and has not experienced any problem with it, but when I try to add a
newly installed W2KSP1 client to the domain I get the following entries in
the log file:

smbpasswd command won't work
I am trying to setup a /etc/smbpasswd file for my users. I use the
following command to create the /etc/smbpasswd file
cat /etc/passwd | ./mksmbpasswd.sh > /etc/smbpasswd
Redhat 7.1, samba 2.2.5
I thought that users could log onto the linux system and simply type the
command:
smbpasswd
and it would ask for the new password. But it asks for an OLD password
which never works. I thought

Hi,
Last week, while trying to compile IceCast2 from CVS on several Debian
machines (sid, woody, sarge), I encountered a problem where autoconf
told me to file a bug report, which I did with Debian's reportbug
utility.
here's the answer from Ben Pfaff, who's in charge of Autoconf at Debian,
which you may find interesting to read.
hth.
bye,

Possible bug in authentication cache in dovecot 1.1.alpha4
Hello,
it seems that there is some bug in authentication cache code in dovecot
version 1.1.alpha4 - after login attempt with wrong password the correct
password also will fail.
I can reproduce it very easy:
$telnet 10.10.10.30 110

pass pass
+OK Logged in.
quit
+OK Logging out.
