Samba 3 PDC and NT 4 BDC
I have a samba 3 domain controller and would like to have an NT4 server as a BDC, is this possible. Can the schema and user accounts be migrated to the NT4 machine, so that the NT4 machine can be upgraded to Active Directory? Has anyone done this before? -- Cody Jarrett IT Freedom? cjarrett@itfreedom.com Office: 512.419.0070 Fax: 512.419.0080

2.2.7 and getting old SID
I am trying to migrate from a Samba 2.2.7 PDC to Samba 3, and I need the old domain SID. 2.2.7 doe not have the net tools, so net getlocalsid will not work, the 2.2.7 version of smbpasswd does not have the -X option (which www.richardsharpe.com talked about) and tdbdump dumps the SID in HEX, but I don't think I can use that (and I have been unsuccessful in converting to ASCII)... Is there any

winbind / sid problem.
Hello all, I have a strange problem that I'd like advice on. Here I run several samba servers as home directory and print servers for an NT 4.0 (sp6a) domain. The domains relevant to this problem are CANNING and STUDENT. The STUDENT domain trusts users in the CANNING domain. My samba server is RedHat 6.2 (+ updates) running samba 2.2.7 (built today). I upgraded because of a different

Change in SID: users having trouble
When I migrated our Samba PDC from version 2.2.7 to 3.0, I was forced to have the 4 machines we are using rejoin our domain, because the SID had changed. Since then, users have been able to log on, but any attempt to start IE, or Outlook fails, apparently because something in the user's profile cannot be accessed due to the SID modification, and the icons in the WinXP start menu have

Files That Constantly Change
Does anybody have any tuning tips for a samba 3.0.23 server that is acting as a PDC with ldap backend and file server. The problem I'm having is a certain program runs in XP workstations that accesses files on one of the shares, it apparently opens lots of files and is constantly making changes to them. When I run top, I see each smbd process for each workstations is consuming about

Changing user SID or Domain (doesn't work)
I'll start off with my question: how do you change a user's SID? When I issue the command: [root@server root]# pdbedit -u testuser -U \ S-1-5-21-4000410194-515421893-615041212-2006 I see testuser:516:Test User [root@server root]# Then, I do "pdbedit -Lv testuser" and it still shows the old SID. Now, I'll give you a little background. Previously, this server (NetBIOS

idmap_rid problem - winbindd_sid_to_uid: Could not get uid for sid
In a ADS(Adv Serv 2003) setup with a few linux members, I'd like to achieve consistent UIDs for domain users across these linux machines, and idmap_rid seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. However, I cannot get winbind to create uids or gids from SIDs at all. Any hints? --Erik S. Johansen ares samba # smbd -V Version 3.0.10 ares samba # pwd /var/cache/samba ares samba # rm *.tdb

"net lookup sid" fails to get user's domain
When I run the following "net lookup sid" command, I get: # net lookup sid S-1-5-21-1908027396-2059629336-315576832-12220 S-1-5-21-1908027396-2059629336-315576832-12220 1 (User) \fhess This is wrong in that "\fhess" should be "NIST\fhess". The other direction works fine: # net lookup name "NIST\fhess" S-1-5-21-1908027396-2059629336-315576832-12220 1

SID security
Thanks to data backups I can "whip out" the /srv directory and rebuild from scratch to "get permissions correct." Doing this because, yes, I did provision a new domain. (Probably faster to wipe, reconfigure dir and restore than correct the SID mistake.) Oh well, learning the hard way or as we like to call it around here, "OJT" (on the job training.) On Mon, Oct 5,

Winbind Kerberos Problem? - Getting Wrong User SID
I am having trouble getting users connected to shares after setting ACL permissions on the share (removing the Everyone group and adding specific users). I have no problem with wbinfo, getent, or net join commands. I can also kinit a user and use smbclient -k to connect to windows shares from the samba server. I have removed ncsd from the system to make sure it can't run. BTW, the user can

cant convert SID to UID...
I am running a redhat 7.3 server with the 2.4.26 kernel. I am using Samba 3.0.0beta2 to allow Windows AD Users to access our sendmail mailserver with their windows logins/passwords. Things have gone very smoothly for quite some time until I recently went to add new users. If i try to convert the SID's of users i added a while ago, it still works.. but for any new users i try to add, it does
