Reload instance data on instantiate
I''m working on a website which interacts with Amazon web services.
I have an Item class which is a cache for amazon items. I''d like to
have the class instances to refresh data every day (Time.now -
item.last_updated > 1.day) but not sure how.
I''ve tried with

link_to and url_for in ActionMailer
I am new to ActionMailer and having a problem.
I want to be able to send a notification e-mail when a new item is added
to a list. Sending an e-mail to the right people on creation is working
fine.
However, I want to include in the e-mail a link to the application so
that users can click on the link in the e-mail and immediately be taken
to the show view for the new item. When I add a link_to

OT: Anyone Using a Time Logger?
I have multiple projects and it''s important for me to track time by client
and by project. There''s a Windows application that allows me to do this, but
I''m looking for a cross-platform solution.
I looked at ConsultComm but it wouldn''t install on my Mac. Rather than
rewriting what seems like a commonly-required app, I wondered if anyone else

two monitors
Hi, I have set up two monitors. I am using windows XP. I would like to keep
one window- command line in one monitor and the script and graphs in the
second monitor. How do I set it up?
It works for word documents simply by dragging the document. It does not
work if I drag and drop the scripts window. Is R not compatible for this?
Thanks.

How do I get my IT department to "bless" R?
I currently use R at work "under the radar", but there's a chance I
could loose that access. I'd like to get our company to feel
comfortable with open source and R in particular. Does anyone have
any experience with their company's IT department and management that
they would be willing to share? How does one get an all Microsoft
shop on board with allowing users to user

Differencing data by groups
Colleagues,
I am analyzing data collected during oceanographic cruises. We have
conducted many cruises over the last decade. On each cruise we visit ~50
stations. At each station (termed EventNum)we lower an instrument that
measures depth, temperature, salinity and oxygen every few seconds as it is
lowered through the water. Data from all EventNums on all cruises are
stacked, generating a data

Problem with a if statement inside a function
I have a really long functions, and at the end of the function, I am using a
if statement
to tag certain keywords based on whether they have certain values contained
in them.
However, the if statement doesn't seem to work.
When I had split up the commands into various functions, it worked fine, but
I'm not sure
what going on now that it's combined into a single function.

[RFC] Multi-language rails
I''ve started working on rails translations and localization.
My first notes are at
http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/RailsLocalization
First doubt:
ri18n uses functions like _(), _i(), or n_() to mark translatable strings. We
need to mark some of these in ActiveRecord and maybe another components of
the framework. Since the translation framework is initialized by railties,

Stat textbook recommendations?
Hello,
I'm looking for a textbook that can explain some of the math behind
the intro-to-intermediate stuff like ANOVA, multiple regression, non-
parametric tests, etc.
A little background: I took an intro stats course last year and
would like to further my education. Being as that was the highest
(and only) stats class the local community college offers, it looks

SCCM and other MS tools compatibility with Samba 4.x.x (Functional level 2008R2)
Hello Folks,
We're using Samba as AD servers along with Windows AD Servers (2008R2 FL).
We also use SCCM (Current Branch) that is dependent on AD for lab
deployments (Windows 10).
Currently, SCCM (current branch) supports 2008R2 FL, but for how long???
Samba does not support 2012R2, 2016, 2019 FL.
We'd like to remove the Windows Servers from our AD infrastructure, but
would also like

Organizations where IT has approved the use of R software
Hi Gang,
I realize this post is not directly related to programing issues with R,
however, it appears this may be the best place to ask my question.
I am putting forward a request that R be considered "approved" software in
my organization. Never an easy task, this is made much more difficult given
that it is open source software (sends the IT gang into little fits). So, I
