Question on application/database design for a application port to rails
Hi all
I am hoping that the experience and knowledge of this ''list'' will be
able to help me out with some design decisions I have to make while
porting a desktop app to rails.
Here is the scoop:
I am in the design process of porting a fairly large client/server app
to rails. Average data set is about 200 MB per database/server.
Altogether there are about 100 tables and about

Can RH AS3 be a ADS member with winbind+nss+krb5?
Samba is trying to be a member server in an AD in native mode, using
winbind, nss, and kerberose. There are 3 kdc's (2 are Win2003, 1 is
Win2000), samba server is RH-AS3 + Samba version 3.0.9 (from samba.org)
+ krb5 1.3.1-6 (from Fedora Core). I thought I had things working (join
succeeded, could access shares, modify files), and then it stopped
working. After clearing out the host account

pam ssh athentication using winbind
Samba setup as a Member Server in native AD domain with winbind
authenticating AD users for access to shares. My understanding is that
with pam and winbind, domain users can log into the samba server via
ssh, even if they do not have a local user account? Logs shows access
granted but user unknown, so I must be missing something and need some
help.

I have a samba share on centos5 that uses AD authentication. I can do
wbinfo -u and it returns the AD users.. but getent only returns the local
centos users.
Any pointers on where i have gone wrong?
I am trying to chown to an AD user/group, but it is now working.. is the
format chown domain\user:domain\group path/to/file ?
Thanks..

allow trusted domains
There is a samba compiled without winbind support, with the following
options configured:
workgroup = MYDOMAIN
security = domain
allow trusted domains = yes
add user script = /usr/sbin/pw useradd %u -m -Y -M 755
When a Windows user MYDOMAIN\john connects to the samba server, he is
mapped to the Unix user john. If there is no Unix user "john", it is
created by the add user script.

AD member ticket verify errors
I installed samba-3.0.9-1 on RedHat-AS3, configured it as a member
server, and joined the domain. wbinfo -u and -g work. When I brows to
the samba share from Windows XP client, I see the shares, and my home
directory is listed, but I am prompted for a password when I try to use
the share. No password works. The samba log for the client session

reference to objects
Hi,
is there a way to reference to a data object without copying it?
For example I have a huge matrix called dist and I want two objects
obj1 and obj2 to have a memeber dist that points to the matrix, but
I don't want, for memory reasons, to copy the matrix twice.
As far as I understand the following code will generate three copies
of my data:
dist <- some_code_that_generates_data

"ksh: scp: not found"
I upgraded a compiled version of ssh-1.2.27 to a swinstalled depot of
OpenSSH_2.5.1p1 on HPUX-11.00.
I created links in /usr/local/bin/<ssh program> pointing to
/opt/openssh2/bin/<ssh program>.
Ssh works. Scp does not. HP support does not support ssh.
Below the line you will find the output of a verbose scp command from
the server to it self.

I need help debugging pam_winbind.so in /etc/pam.d/ssh on debian.
Samba is a member of an AD domain, authenticating access to shares via
winbind+nsswitch.conf. Authentication to shares works great. Now I
want winbind to authenticate ssh users as a pam module and it's failing.

Automatically unpause a paused queue memeber - bad idea?
I have some cases when I want to pause a queue member and automatically unpause the queue member after a specified time.
Right now I am doing it by a AMI script, but was thinking if it is possible to add a parameter to PauseQueueMember like,
PauseQueueMember([queuename],interface[,options[,reason[,time]]]) where time will be how long (in seconds) the interface
will be paused. before brought back.

smbladp_conf shell opts
I'm setting up a smaba/ldap server and I'd really like "regular" samba
users to not have local login privs. (LDAP will handle all unix and
samba accounts.)
So, to that end, I thought changing the options in smbldap.conf,
specifically...
userLoginShell="/bin/bash"
to something like
userLoginShell="/sbin/nologin"
Is there some unanticipated impact that would
