Multiple UID-0 accounts in a Samba domain?
Hi folks,
I have a Solaris 8 machine, running Samba 2.2.2, acting as a domain
controller.
Several different people in the Department do administrative work, such
as adding client machines to the network. Rather than a single shared
root password we've historically given each sysadmin a root equivelent
account, so that in addition to root account there are several other
administrator accounts

Samba patches - where best to send them?
Hi Folks,
Where is the best place to feed back patches and problem reports for
Samba these days? Should I be using "samba-patches@samba.org"? This
list? The samba-technical list?
The samba-bugs address bounces back an auto-response telling one to use
samba-patches for well-formed patches, but if the Jitterbug web
interface is to be believed then submissions to samba-patches seem to be

NetBIOS keepalives.
Hi folks,
I have a couple of observations about NetBIOS keepalive handling in
Samba, in case anyone is interested. I came across a few oddities when
investigating why some of our Samba servers were logging:
lib/util_sock.c:write_socket_data(540)
write_socket_data: write failure. Error = Broken pipe
type errors on a very frequent and regular basis.
We have a number of Solaris 2.6 machines,

Unable to open printcap file lpstat
Hi
I?ve been carrying out some upgrades to our SCO Unixware 7 server. I?ve updated from 7.1.3 to 7.1.4, and then installed maintenance pack2.
On the Samba side, this means that Samba has been upgraded from 2.2.8a (with UnxWare 7.1.3) to 3.0.0 (with UnixWare 7.1.4). Everything seemed to be working fine at this point. Samba was then upgraded to 3.0.10 (with maintenance pack 2), and I

suggestions for plotting 5000 data points
Dear all,
I have a collection of 5000 entries which represent the evolutionary
rates of 3 animals.
I would like to show the differences between the rates of all 3
animals and have tried using the function parallel (from the lattice
package) and pairs() function.
The parallel function would have been perfect save for the large
number of data (5000). The pairs() function doesn't show

how to check if a variable is preferentially present in a sample
Dear All,
I do apologise if this question is out of place for this list but I've
tried searching mailing lists and read "Introductory Statistics with
R" by Peter Dalgaard, but couldn't find any hints on solving my
question below:
I have a data frame (d) of values which I will rank in decreasing
order of "val". Each value belongs to a group, either 'A',

Is this an artifact of using "which"?
Dear all,
I used "which" to obtain a subset of values from my data.frame.
however, I find that there is a "trace" of the values I have removed.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciate.
Below is my data:
d <- data.frame( val = 1:10,
group = sample(LETTERS[1:5], 10, repl=TRUE) )

LP print service stalls
Hi All,
When our server receives simultaneous print jobs from 2 or more clients, the print service stalls and I have to manually restart it (lpsched).
I am running Samba 2.0.4b under Solaris 2.5.1 on a SPARC 20 and I'm using system V printing. The printers are connected to the ethernet using HP Jetdirect cards and administered by jetadmin on the Sun box.
Any ideas on how I could troubleshoot

how to read in multiple files with unequal number of columns
Dear all,
I want to read in 1000 files which contain varying number of columns.
For example:
file[1] contains 8 columns (mixture of characters and numbers)
file[2] contains 16 columns etc
I'm reading everything into one big data frame and when I try rbind, R
returns an error of
"Error in rbind(deparse.level, ...) :
numbers of columns of arguments do not match"

Unable to initgroup!
Hello all, Help!!
Am running Unix 2.4 and Samba allowing windows clients to map the
Unix server.
Some users have been unable to connect to mapped drives and having
looked at the logs I see the message:
Unable to initgroup!
this is probably a problem with the account nobody
This message appears in all the user logs, however, only some users
have the problem of connecting. I have looked at the

Advanced printers shares
Hi
Here the problem. I am using samba 2.0.10 on sparc Solaris 8 platform in a
Nis env. Currently we have about 100 or so printers listed in printers.conf
nis map, these printers cover our 5 sites which all use the same nis env.
Each site has one Domain master, and a local master on any separate subnets,
as not all is in the same domain.
When ours users log into a samba server they are

Default changed (printcap) in 1.9.18p8
Hi all,
Am I the only person to have fallen over the following 'gotcha' ?
Upgraded to 1.9.18p8 from 19.9.17p5 on Friday.
Came in this morning to discover all Printing had died.
Eventually tracked this down to the 'printcap name' setting in Samba jad
changed.
It default was '/etc/printcap' (it must have been as printing was fine
up 17p5 and all previous versions).

Are you using wins?
Try lmhosts for the start?
Are all machines on the same subnet?
Just a few hints to start with ...

Configure error 2.2.0 - no locking
I've got Redhat 6.2 kernel 2.2.18 and have been running samba 2.07.
When I try to configure samba 2.2.0, the configure bombs out with
an error
ERROR: No locking available. Running Samba would be unsafe
with what I think relevant lines from the configure output are:
checking for Linux kernel oplocks... no
checking for fcntl locking... no
Is there something I have to enable in the Kernel for

Sun finally ships Samba as standard on Solaris 9
Well you won't find them shouting about it, but if you dig down
in their web pages on Solaris 9 you'll find this :
"Common Linux applications, such as Samba, Apache, Linux (GNU) commands,
etc., are included in the Solaris 9 Operating Environment. The Solaris
Software Companion CD has an even more comprehensive set of free software."
So I guess that means we made it onto the OS

Multiple Services on one Server
Newbie question!
We currently are running a product call
TAS from Syntax Corporation and would like to move to Samba. I have review
the documentation and cannot find how to set up muliple services on one
server. I tried using the Netbios name = and the include statement to
bring in another smb.conf file but I don't think I'm on the right track.

ADDITIONAL ISSUE
Andrew:
One additional issue that came up with trying to configure the SMB.CONF
file:
The "Using Samba" book from O'Reilly says to start up my browser and go to
"http://localhost:901, to use the SWAT package.
This did not work. My IE 5.0 came back with an unable to locate or connect
to
the specified host.
I know the /etc/services file was modified correctly, I checked it
