To anyone successfully using NT ACLs with Samba
When you re-open the properties of an existing file or directory with ACLs set on it from a Windows workstation, do you see the usernames and group names properly? Or do you see SIDs in the dialog box as I do? Just gathering data. If you are seeing usernames and group names properly I'd love to see your smb.conf file. In my case, the Samba server is an AD domain member. -- Thomas Boutell

Enable samba BDC to allow writing to local LDAP
How to configure smb.conf of a samba BDC server to allow that all changes (user's passwords changing, joining computers) was written to local LDAP. I?ve set remotes LDAP's (BDCs) with multimaster configuration via syncrepl. LDAP Multimaster feature works fine (N-way replication works perfectly) I need this configuration to void errors when a user must to change his/her password in a

Can I recommend theora to my readers yet? Please?
Hi, I'm working on updates to the WWW FAQ (okay, it's a little much to use the singular in 2006, but it was the first!). Embedded multimedia has been a sore spot for a while. I've been recommending that people embed old-school MPEG, because it works in all players. But it's awful. Terrible bitrates. I'm on the verge of recommending SWF instead, even though it's a hideous

PDC / BDC in a Samba Domain Controller.
Hello I makeing a Domain Controller with Samba (v3.0.33) and LDAP (v2.4). I will install a PDC in the headquarter and a BDC in the subsidiary of the company that I work. The PDC and the BDC will have his own LDAP data base. I just install the PDC without problems and my next step is to install the BDC. I configured the LDAP that work in multi master mode. I made some test and the LDAP works

Unable to set ACLs with Samba 3.0.11, near publication deadline
Hello, Jeremy and Jerry, I met both of you at LinuxWorld in Boston, where I learned tons and tons of great stuff from your presentations. I'm writing on deadline for publication and would really, really, really like to show off Samba's ability to map NT ACLs to POSIX ACLs. But right now, I can't make them work. I've spent some time on the Samba list trying to make this work, but

Samba 3 with OpenLDAP multimaster or Fedora-DS
Hi, I'd like to know if any of you have ever implemented Samba 3 with OpenLDAP multimaster (using syncrepl, maybe) or Fedora-DS. The basic idea would be: - WAN link dies, the remote office's BDC would promote itself to PDC (using some kind of monitoring script), and will start accepting changes to the user base. Also, some change to the local WINS server would be necessary. - WAN link

Dave clients on OS 9 not able to logon to Samba 3
Sorry for the lengthy post, Have a mix of OS 9 Macs, OS X, and Win XP clients which need to connect to a Samba server. Been using Dave 4.0.2 on the OS 9 machines, native smb client on OS X ones. We have one RedHat 7.3 server, with samba-2.2.7, from rpm, which works fine. Now I'm building a RedHat 9 server, with Samba 3.0.13-1, compiled from source. But can't get the Dave clients on

Understanding Documentation about BDC in HowTo Collection
hi list&john, i read in the documention about BDCs: The domain SID has to be the same on the PDC and the BDC. In Samba versions pre-2.2.5, the domain SID was stored in the file |private/MACHINE.SID|. For all versions of Samba released since 2.2.5 the domain SID is stored in the file |private/secrets.tdb|. This file is unique to each server and cannot be copied from a PDC to a BDC; the BDC

Samba LDAP Failover
Hi, I have a quite "simple" setup for a particular customer that loves redundancy and failover. PDC + BDC with LDAP Passwords on two 389-ds in multimaster node + several samba member servers Actually pointing singularly on both the systems everything works great. As soon as I modify my passdb backend line from the single form to the form containing both backends that is from passdb

Can't see my Samba server into the A.D. Domain
Samba server: SUN/Solaris 8 Samba version 3.0.10 Domain: Active Directory with a W2K PDC My Samba server is a Domain Member Server, connected to the Active Directory Domain with the "net rpc join" unix command. All the MS-Windows SMB client from the Domain can connect an use, without any problem, the shares of the Samba server. When I use, on an MS-Windows client or the PDC, the

Can set ACLs great from Windows, but see only SIDs when i reopen them
Good morning, Samba List, I'm setting ACLs from the security tab of the properties window of a folder via a Windows XP SP2 client. The Samba share in question is running on 3.0.11 with an ext3 file system and Fedora Core 3 underneath. All this works great -- I can set up ACLs beautifully from Windows and when I check them out with getfacl on the Linux side, the results make sense to me.

Join samba to existing Windows domain
Hi, I am running samba 3.0.14a on FreeBSD 6 box. I need this box to join to existing Windows 2003 domain to act as a file server to serve Windows XP clients. In the book "using samba" says to use "smbpasswd -j ..." to join the domain. But the -j option seems didn't existing. Anyone would be able to tell me what is the best way to make samba to join the domain? Thanks,

MultiMaster dsync (cluster1 cluster2 cluster3)
Will MultiMaster dsync work fine or will be big problems ? I configured dovecot to dsync from serv1 to serv2 to serv3 and repeat to serv1 to serv2 to serv3 and repeat... When email received to serv2, it will be synced to serv3, and serv3 will sync it to serv1, and serv1 will sync it to serv2 and will stop here because emails matched. What problems can be with this kind of configuration ?

Transfering Machine Accounts / MACHINE.SID
I have a Samba 2.2.7 PDC, and I am now trying to set up a new 3.0.1 server. I want this machine to act as a BDC initially and replicate all the accounts over. When I followed the howto it said to use smbpasswd -S to transfer the machine SID and then to replicate the smbpasswd file to the new server. This has caused two major problems: 1) the smbpasswd command does not support the -S option

some question about BDCs
Hi, I want to set up SaMBa PDC and BDC with LDAP. I read the TOSHARG2, but don't understand something: >Samba-3 cannot participate in true SAM replication and is therefore not able to employ >precisely the same protocols used by MS Windows NT4. A Samba-3 BDC will not create >SAM update delta files. Ok, I understand until that, but: >It will not interoperate with a PDC (NT4 or

ACL Question [Repost]
OK so I've got samba-3.0.11 compiled with ACL support. I've running 2.4.25 with the ACL/ATTR patch applied. I can read and set ACLS's using the getfacl/setfacl programs. ldd /usr/sbin/smbd shows it's linked to libattr.so.1 and libacl.so.1. I can read ACL with the smbcacls program, but when I try to set them I get: ERROR: Unable to open credentials file! Also from the

openldap mmr + heartbeat hot standby
Hi List, I've setup 2 openldap servers in n-way multimaster replication mode in a test environment, both run centos 6.2, this works well but now i'm trying to make these 2 servers failover using heartbeat. i've got no experience with heartbeat (or setting up clusters in general) however from what i understand heartbeat starts/stops the service if the server has the virtual IP
