Some smbd-processes uses 99% CPU and push load to 10
Hi all I have a samba 3.0.2a PDC with OpenLDAP running since some month. Approximatly once in 2 weeks there is a problem with one smbd-child process which eats up all cpu-resources. I have to kill (-2) it by hand after that all works normal. I can't figure out why. Today i had the chance to "strace" this process since all "clients" go for a birthday party. Now i sit here

samba stops when cups is giving up
Hi, we are running cups as print service on a single server. This server is also running samba to export the printer for the windows world. However sometimes we get the following messages on the samba file server. At this time the cupsd is still running, but not accessible. So looking at the status of the cupsd is not helpful. Two questions: Whats going on with the cupsd ? Why is samba

How to minimize authentication traffic

Now i have to install a new server at an other location with a 1 Mbit/s connection. I don't know yet how reliable the connection will be. The users "faraway" should not need to manual authenticate to fileservers in the Central. What would you

Weird problem: cannot see files...
I've been trying to setup a samba server on my computer so that the other Windows computers on my network can access the files on it. I'm running version 3.0.20 of sambe that came stock with Slackware 10.2. I've gotten it up and running with this simple smb.conf: [global] workgroup = Mshome security = share [downloads] path = /mnt/wind/downloads read only = yes

PhatBox and Music Keg unofficially support Vorbis
PhatBox and Music Keg (which I'd describe as MP3 players that hook into your car stereo) unofficially support Vorbis. Apparently there was a post to vorbis-dev quite a while ago about this, but it's news to me, and it hasn't been on this list. I'll add this to my hardware list, which I'll post here soon. This was a (very speedy :-)) response I got from PhatNoise's

Re: Intermittent "internal error: signal 11" with 3.0.24
Hi all Follow up to this post, as it didn't seem to go through the first time. We have a common problem occurring with our Samba setups. We run 3 (identical) processing environments that each contain a Samba host sharing approx .5TB of data to 6 Wintel machines. Normally these hosts operate fine, though we intermittently experience a Samba panic (intermittent = every 2-3 days) as per below.
