smbpasswd overwrites existing displayname in LDAP entry
Configuration: Samba 2.2.8a with openLDAP 2.1.30 on a SeSE 8.2. server When adding a user using a ldif file we give the user a given name, say Ruud Baart. The cn and uid are the same, say 21cs12345 (a studentnumber). After adding the user to LDAP the displayname is as expected: "Ruud Baart". However after smbpasswd -a 21cs12345 -s secret the displayname is "21cs12345".

printer admin problems with 2.2.4
We upgraded from 2.2.3a to 2.2.4 on a SuSE 7.2 server. We compiled Samba just default. The new version seems to work ok with the exception of printer administration. Printer admins are not able to see the properties of the printers (right click on printer gives on error). Our workstations are W2k SP2. But users that are not printer admin are able to see the properties of a printer, but they

I'm converting my NT 4.0 Print Servers to Samba Print Servers. Which printing system should I be using? LPR, LPRng or CUPS. I would love to have some feedback on the advantages and disadvantages or what the Samba Team recommends as a standard for working wih Samba. In case you need it, my system is SuSE 7 kernel 2.2.16 running under VM on s/390. Thanks, Josh Konkol, CNE MCSE Senior

W2k devmode
Our server is a SuSE Linux 7.2 with CVS samba 2.2 branche. Version number is 2.2.pre-4. We updated today. We have a problem with the default devmode in Windows 2000 (SP2) clients. We have uploaded the printerdrivers to the share print$. The Samba printeradministrator is able to change the printer capabilities as memory, trays, papersize. etc. Changes are global: when a user logs in, he sees

High cpu load
Server is PII-350MHz/256 MB RAM, hardware mirrored high speed SCSI disks. Installed is SuSE 8.2 with Samba 2.2.8a RPM, XFS filesystems and LPRng as printservices. Server acts as PDC and WINS server. Clients are W2K SP2 (a few with SP3). There are +/- 100 clients. We see a server that is 100% busy and we see during a long time a very high CPU load (60- 95%) related to one W2K client. When

Installation error on old Slackware version 10.2
Not very important but installation of shorewall 4.4.14 (and probably other versions) on a old Slackware system (10.2) fails: install -T -o root -g root -m 0755 shorewall /sbin/shorewall ERROR: Failed to install -T -o root -g root -m 0755 shorewall /sbin/shorewall Setting T="" instead of T="-T" in install.sh solves the problem but it is not a solution. -- Regards,

Samba 3 ADS problem with %g variable
Hi I have successfully configured my SuSE Linux 9.0 server to use Samba 3.0.14 and accept my Windows 2000 users through Active Directory to access the shares. However I have some shares that have paths that are made up of %g/%U variables. The %U works fine but I cannot get the %g in any format to give me just the group name I get DOMAIN/groupname sent through instead which is making the paths

LSA and SAMR pipes in winbind client
As far as I saw, since some microsoft patch for AD, winbind client from samba 3.0.14 (and prior versions) does not work properly for getting users and groups from Active Directory. This problem was solved in 3.0.20. I saw the following text in the samba 3.0.20 changelog: "Disable schannel on the LSA and SAMR pipes in winbindd client code to deal with Windows 2003 SP1 and Windows 2000 SP4

Hello, I was using version 3.0.14 and upgraded to 3.0.20a. I did not change my config, however, I am seeing some serious problems now, and I am not sure what to do about it. I noticed there were a large number of changes between these two versions. I looked at the changes briefly, but there are just so many. This samba server is a domain memmber, on an ADS domain with a win 2003 enterprise

last version of samba?
Hi, I'm interested in the update of the samba version in one of our servers, but I'm confused: http://www.samba.org says the last stable version of samba is 3.0.14, but the link is not working, and in various ftp mirrors, in their "stable" subdirectory, I see the 3.0.9 versi?n as the last versi?n. What's happening? Can you help me? Thanks --
