NT Domain vs DNS
Please forgive newness here. Have accepted job as
network administrator coming from a helpdesk type
position. One task in front of me is upgrading
an NT domain. I want to use Samba to replace it, and
have been reading the Howto, FAQ's etc.
The current NT domain is a singularly named "WMHS"

Internet connection. Now they have a

Question on "read only" behavior in smb.conf
Hi All,
I've built Samba v2.2.8a on a RedHat 7.2 system and it seems to work ok.
However
I cannot understand the "read only" parameter in the following situation:
smb.conf file:
-------------------
[global]
security=user
encrypt passwords=yes
[foo]
path=/tmp/foo
read only=yes
The owner&mode of /tmp/foo is:

AW: Problems with machine accounts
Hi there,
after several (pretended successful) rejoins to the domain it does not work
and we decided to give up the domain login concept and simply map the
shares by a batch file now. We also had to disable the downloadable printer
driver option, because not all drivers work correctly :-(

We're using Samba 3.0.21a-1 on a CentOS 4.2 server (kernel
2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp); everything works more or less fine,
it's functioning as the PDC with an OpenLDAP back end (setup
essentially straight from the Idealx.org playbook), etc.
We're trying to mount Windows shares to back them up, and
getting "permission denied" errors when trying to read

migrate profile from an old server to a new one - SID and ntuser.dat problem
Hi,
my problem is the following:
i am trying to replace an old SUSE 8.2, Samba 2.2
domain controller with a SUSE 9.3 system with samba
3.0 as PDC.
Everything works fine, i can join the new domain, i
replaced the machine and domain sid from the new
server with the old ones.
But how can reuse the profiles from the old machine
at the new one?
If i make a simple remote copy, the settings of the

Help on R Coding
Hi all,
I am kind of stuck of using Predict function in R to make prediction
for a model with continuous variable and categorial variables. i have
no problem making the model, the model is e.g.
cabbage.lm2<- lm(VitC ~ HeadWt + Date + Cult)
HeadWt is a continuous variable, Date and Culte are factors. Date have
three levels inside (d16,d20,d21), Cult has two levels(c39,c52). I

multcomp::glht() doesn't work for an incomplete factorial using aov()?
Hi R users,
I sent a message yesterday about NA in model estimates (
http://r.789695.n4.nabble.com/How-set-lm-to-don-t-return-NA-in-summary-td3722587.html).
If I use aov() instead of lm() I get no NA in model estimates and I use
gmodels::estimable() without problems. Ok!
Now I'm performing a lot of contrasts and I need correcting for
multiplicity. So, I can use multcomp::glht() for this.

Bug in Samba v2.2.8a with Windows API GetFileAttributes ?
Before my company was bought out by another company, we were using Samba
v1.9.3 and I'm pretty certain that the GetFileAttributes was working
properly but I can't be absolutely sure. Since the move, we're using v2.2.5
and just recently upgraded to v2.2.8a on Solaris 2.7. I'm doing my testing
on an XP machine.
I'm seeing that GetFileAttributes is always returning 0 instead of

How set lm() to don't return NA in summary()?
Hi,
I've data from an incomplete fatorial design. One level of a factor doesn't
has the levels of the other. When I use lm(), the summary() return NA for
that non estimable parameters. Ok, I understant it. But I use
contrast::contrast(), gmodels::estimable(), multcomp::glht() and all these
fail when model has NA estimates. This is becouse vcov() and coef() has
different dimensions. Is

Samba Migration from 2.2.7a to 3.0.14a
Hi,
I'm new to this list so please do not flame me if this is not an appropriate
question.
I would like to migrate from an old Server running Samba 2.2.7a as Domain
controller to a new one running version 3.0.14a. The new server (with a new
hostname) should be the DC in the future as the old server is to be
decommissioned. Now I am looking a good HOWTO or similar document describing

changing passwords from Windows XP Pro workstations
Back to square 1! I stripped out my unsuccessful attempts to get Samba
working with LDAP on my Debian Sarge server and am back with a tdbsam
backend. I actually tried to purge as much of the old Samba & LDAP as I
could then reinstalled fresh. This included removing the Windows groups
and users and even the old tdbsam data.
Unfortunately, I'm back where I started - users can't

Samba + LDAP
Hi,
I got samba 3.0.26a on my Fedora 7, and when i try to add users with
smbpasswd -a username, it only works if the user exists as a linux
user... i got a Centos 4.4 system with samba 3.0.10 and it works even
if the user doesn't exists on the system.
Can anyone explain me why this happens? is it from this new version
(3.0.26a) or may be a problem of
Fedora 7?

New domain, Samba PDC, tdbsam, where are the groups?
I'm setting up a new domain with Samba 3.0.30 as the PDC using the
tdbsam backend. 'net group' yields an empty list, which is consistent
with the cautious appoach that Samba takes: don't do anything
automagically. But, a new Windows PDC will come online with several
well-known domain users and groups. Did I miss the step where I run
some stock script that creates these expected

SHN
I am interetsed to know views on how does best quality ogg compression compare
with SHN or whether this is this really comparing apples with oranges because
SHN does not compress that greatly?
I am on a Music list that is doing a Tape Tree. I guess Grateful dead have
made SHN the cult leader format.
