Windows LMB and Samba DMB problems.
Note: LMB = Local Master Browser DMB = Domain Master Browser Have Samba 2.2.7A running embedded in a variant of ucLinux. My interest was only to use Samba as a WINS server. I've set up the SMB.CONF with this config. for one test: wins support = yes local master = no domain master = yes preferred master = no os level = 0 I've set up the SMB.CONF with this config. for the other

Understanding the role of DMB/LMB on a net that has a WINS server
If I have a client that wants to enumerate and access shares on a subnet, and that client knows the IP of the WINS server, is there any need for the client to use the "browsing" services of a DMB or LMB? What is the order of operations of the client? Here is what I imagine to be the case: 1. client asks LMB for a list of all available shares 2. LMB sends client the list of all known

When and how often are elections held for LMB?
Can someone clarify this for me? The docs are not clear. It seems that an election is held when: * There is no LMB or the current LMB shuts down. * A machine joins the network with "preferred master = yes" and forces an election. Any other times when an election is held? What's also not clear is how OFTEN the election is held. The how-to makes a passing reference that "two

Browse list only shows Samba server
Hi all, I'm having a small problem with browsing. I've got a network full of Windows (2000 and XP) machines and I've installed a Samba server in it. The server is configured to be Domain Master Browser (DMB), Local Master Browser (LMB) and WINS server for a workgroup. The Win machines are configured to use the WINS server. Name resolution works perfectly, but browsing

WINS server DMB and LMBs not communicating across subnet to update browse lists?
Referencing: http://www.linuxtopia.org/online_books/network_administration_guides/samba_reference_guide/17_NetworkBrowsing_34.html I've got two subnets (192.168.2.1 and 192.168.1.1). All the machines on both subnets are running XP Home or Pro and are all part of the same workgroup (WORKGROUP). I've added an OpenSUSE box on x.x.2.1 and have set it as the WINS server with a very simple

Remote subnet browsing using Samba for WINS.
Been experimenting with Samba as a WINS server. Need a WINS server as I am using VPN tunneling. My goal was to set up a central WINS server and have all the computers talk to it for NetBIOS name resolution. In the end I was hoping to have only one Samba server. I have currently worked with: Samba 2.2.7B on a uclinux. Samba 3.0.10 on RedHat. Samba 3.0.10 on Slackware. Samba 3.0.10 on FreeBSD.

Machines not disappearing from browse list
Hello, we are using "samba-2.0.6" (running on linux-2.2.14 machine). On our client machines we use "Windows 9x". There are 2 network segments: Segment 1 (192.168.1.0): - 13 Win95 client machines - 1 samba-2.0.6 server ("fsa01") which is WINS, DMB and LMB in its network segment (192.168.1.0). This samba is also the login server for our Win9x clients. Segment 2

causing LMB elections
I've been running samba servers with 200+ W98 machines for some time. I'm changing to W2k and everything was going fine. I've upgraded 40 boxes. One W2k box has started announcing itself as a local master browser for one of the workgroups. A samba server thinks it is master, forcing election. Samba will stop being the LMB for about 3 minutes and then will re-establish itself as

simple cross-network browsing setup is failing
PROBLEM: Cross-subnet browsing is not working. Browse lists on all machines contain only the machines on the local subnet. SUMMARY OF ANALYSIS: The Local Master Browser (LMB) running Windows XP (ZAYIN) never contacts the Domain Master Browser (DMB) running Samba (BETH) to initiate a synchronization of browse lists.

lmb can't sync browse list with dmb, find_domain_master_name_query_fail
Hello. Browsing accross subnets fails because "route2-3" can't sync its local browse list with the domain master browser "classix", which is also the WINS server. Everything else is fine. There is 1 and only 1 WINS server (classix) and no NT server. The error message in nmb log of route2-3 is: ==================================

Shouldn’t I see a _MSBROWSE_ entry for each LMB on each subnet ?
I see from the log that my system install won the browser election and I see it show up in the WINS monitor as <1B>, but I can't see other subnets in "Net'Neighborhood" and I didn't see this system having an entry '_MSBROWSE_' like my '03 Server on the other subnet did. Shouldn?t I see a _MSBROWSE_ entry for each LMB on each subnet ? CONFIDENTIALITY

AW: Machines not disappearing from browse list
I've exactly the same problem. My config looks similar to yours: 1 samba as wins server (wins support=yes" on one segment, 1 samba as "wins server client" (wins server = xxx). The "wins server client" never discards machines from segment 1. I looked at the browse.dat and the wins.dat on the server on segment 1. There are no entries of the shutdowned maschines. Only in
