excessive lpstat calls
I run a fairly busy samba server that only serves up users' home directory. I am running Samba v3.0.20 under Solaris 10 on a Sun v440. I'm seeing a large number of calls to '/usr/bin/lpstat -v'. These are probably occuring everytime a new client connects, but I'm not positive. The server does not have any printers attached to it, has no entries in /etc/printers.conf, and

Samba closing printer prematurely?
Greetings Samba Users, I have a strange issue. Adobe Reader can't print to a Samba printer. It would be funny except it is happening to me.... Adobe Reader can't print PDF files to a true Adobe PS3 printer but GhostView can print PDF files without any problems. The printer in question is a Ricoh Aficio AP4510. I tried Samba v3.0.11 and v3.0.20 and I get the same result, no printer

Apple shares?
Hi, I have a need to do some file transfers between my AIX 4.3.3 boxes and Apple PC's. I use SAMBA to provide shares to PC's, but I know nothing about Apple. FTP is an option, but less desirable than setting up a share. Does anyone have experience with using SAMBA to set up shares with Apple clients? I know that there are, other products to accomplish what I ask, but in terms of support

Dissapearing samba servers
Hi I've seen a couple of people post this problem, but I've never seen an answer, and now it's happenning to me. I run Solaris 2.5.1, and samba-1.9.17p1. Every so often a pc can look in the network neighborhood and the samba server just isn't there, though you can still map a network drive by using a UNC pathway: \\server\share so the share is still out there but the server

Dovecot+Postfix+Maildir with ActiveDirectory userbase
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, has anyone implemented a mail server with maildir, Postfix and Dovecot using Active Directory ad userbase and password authentication? Do I need Samba to authenticate users? Can I use credential caching just like mysql? Adding Mac OS X 10.4.8 Clients to a Samba AD Domain
I currently have a server running Debian Linux which is running samba and acting as the Domain Controller. I am currently using Active Directory with the Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 clients. We just got 4 iMacs running Mac OS X 10.4.8 and I would like to connect them to the domain and use the same domain users as the Windows clients. I have tried using the built-in AD settings and they

Mounts on Mac, Linux but not Win98 - bad password
I am trying to set up Samba for the very first time in my life on a SlackWare Linux 7.1 system. I'm using kernel 2.4.2, and the Samba 2.0.7 that comes precompiled with Slackware 7. I'm only moderately clueful at this point, but I have experience with other Linux and networking stuff. I can build Samba from sources if you think that would help. I ran through the diagnostic tests given

samba v DAVE
samba server 2.0.6 DAVE 2.1 DAVE 2.0 When the DAVE 2.1 client tries to connect with samba, it gets an error that machine name doesn't match. This DAVE client connects with NT systems fine, and other Windows systems connect with samba fine, so it's just samba and DAVE that are having this failure to communicate. When DAVE 2.0 client tries, it connects fine but when I try to copy a file to

Macintosh OS 9.2 and SMB Networks
Some use Dave (http://www.thursby.com/products/dave.html) or DoubleTalk (http://www.connectix.com/products/dt.html). However, we use Netatalk (http://netatalk.sourceforge.net/) successfully to share the Unix/Samba file system with our Mac clients. Is there any reason you can't use Netatalk? Older Mac to SAMBA copy
I've built a new samba server to replace an aging Apple 9500 running 8.6 that is acting as a 'file server'. The other macs run 9.2 and 10.2, which are the computers that will be served (I HOPE!) by the samba server. I have installed DAVE in order to be able to copy the files over to the new server. However, as the files copy, they disappear on the samba server. Someone said it

Samba4 - PDC - RHEL6 - Slow browsing from Mac clients
Hi, I'm in the process of rolling out a brand new server as a Samba4 PDC to a customer with about 30 users. It's going well except for the fact that I now have some serious slow browsing issues from Mac clients, and that?s when only a handful of them are connected to the server. Note that if I install software such as Dave from Thursby on the Macs, the speed issues vanish. Also, browsing

Samba 3.0.2a - Erroneously rejects NTLMv2 but accepts NTLM
Hello experts, I?ll try and keep this brief but detailed (if that?s possible.). I?m sure I don?t understand the technologies sufficiently but I believe I?m seeing counter-intuitive behavior with my Samba 3 setup. What I want is nice, tight Win 2K3 security. What I?ve got is ADS integration, including domain user authentication using winbind, but I can?t get the security level right. Problem

Dave connecting to samba 17p4 trouble..
Hi, using Dave 2.0b3 under MacOS 8.0 with success. I got one minor problem. I can't consistently logon before I have mounted a samba share. Any solutions to this? Also, I need some advice on how to print to samba printers. Thanks for a great free product! Tore -- Tore H. Larsen Scase AS Engineer C. Illegal Characters in filename
Hi all, We are sharing directories from Windows 2003 server to, among other things, Mac computers. Most of the time the windows shares work perfectly. However we are running into a problem with users entering odd characters into file names on the Mac clients. The Mac clients see these files/folders perfectly fine, as samba on the Mac allows for these odd characters. However, if someone tries

problem with Samba upgrade
Dear Sir, Recently I've upgraded our Samba installation. After then I find that all WinXP workstations cannot logon to the server. The official HOWTO mentioned this problem and suggested resetting the SID using "net setlocalsid ....". But this does not help in my case. The SID of our server has not been changed. So I've to go to every workstation for rejoin the domain. This

Highly Performance and Availability
Hello everyone, I am currently running Dovecot as a high performance solution to a particular kind of problem. My userbase is small, but it murders email servers. The volume is moderate, but message retention requirements are stringent, to put it nicely. Many users receive a high volume of email traffic, but want to keep every message, and *search* them. This produces mail accounts up to

Macintosh + Samba integration
I have been searching through the docs and on the web to no avail. I work at a university and we are moving our fileservers to new hardware. The problem is, nothing seems to integrate Mac's and Win box's happily. We have a large user base using samba already, but when mac's pick up the same share via CAP, CAP creates files to deal with the dual 'stream' nature of files from a

Mounting directories below share level
>From my investigations, and searching the archives, it seems that smbfs can only mount shares, and not directories under the share i.e. smbmount //host/share /mnt works smbmount //host/share/directory /mnt doesn't work Our W2K3 server has user home directories in a tree where there are no user rights to the next node up the tree (level1), which is the directory on the share, i.e.
