Best strategy for setup
I have setup samba on a few servers. Each time, it has been a little confusing, I read, re-read the documentation, and finally get something that works. Usually, I feel like I have not done it the best way. I have looked at how-tos and guides. I am still a novice in *nix. This time, I am reaching out for some help. For some reason, I am just an idiot with Samba. I understand the configuration

Samba 3.4, Windows 7, Roaming profiles and Folder redirection
Hello, I'm quite new to Samba administration and I've inherited a working samba setup with roaming profiles however the login and logout times for users has been growing and I'm starting to think it's time do something about it. I'm thinking redirect some folders to a samba share on the network will speed up the login and logout times. Our setup has 25 Windows 7 workstations

SIPURA SPA-2000 webserver dead after firmware upgrade
I just got a refurb Sipura SPA-2000 and was able to assign it an IP address with DHCP and ping the device, but then I ran the firmware upgrade utility to bring it up to spa2k-2.0.13g which seemed to work just fine, but after it rebooted I cannot connect to its webserver for configuration. I can still ping the unit. When I use the built in voice menu it reads back the right IP address, webserver

Roaming Desktops with Linux Clients
Hi, I have Samba setup on a Debian server and have implemented roaming desktops for the windows clients. In this network, there are also LINUX clients that i would like to use roaming desktops and the users be able to access their home directory on the server when they login to one of these linux clients. Is this possible using Samba? And can anyone point me to a website/tutorial or any

CentOS on Compaq Proliant Rackmount Servers
Greetings, Can anyone relate experience(s) installing CentOS on Compaq rack mount servers units please? Easy no problem, easy some issues, or ghastly do not do it under any circumstances... ;) Basically, I'm looking at some used/refurb dual PIII units and will run RAID on Compaq built in SCSI or is it easy to pop in some 3ware SATA in them? Let me know in terms of CentOS 3 and/or 4 please.

Question about samba 3.0.9
I have been setting up my domain server using FC2 and samba 3.0.9. First thing, for your information: In the notations in several sources, it tells you to user "logon path = \\%L\profiles\%u" this is wrong. It should be, "logon path = \\%L\profiles\%U". Now that I spent 5 million hours banging my head on a wall with that, how do I get he exist desktops on my 2000/XP

Laptop and NFS homedir
Afternoon, Are there any documented best practices for using NFS home directories on laptops? Right now, and this is on CentOS 7, when I disconnect the machine from the network, the desktop freezes, and I can't even tell if the machine switches to the wireless network. If this sort of adapter switching, which is standard in e.g. Windows 10, is even supported. Thanks for any insights.

options_for_select - default nil value
I have a field in a view, like so: <%= select_tag(''quoted_condition'', options_for_select([''NEW'',''RETAIL'',''OEM'',''REFURB''], ''NEW'')) %> This sets the ''selected'' value to ''NEW'' - however, I would like to have a nil value here, so I can

Problem with cast {reshape}: Error in match.fun(FUN) : could not find function "Negate"
Dear All I'm having problem with some script which worked a few months ago (on a different computer that might well have had a different version of R installed, so perhaps it has to do with the old version of R?): library(reshape) Loading required package: plyr > tble.data <- melt.array(interp, varnames=c("tme","lon","lat")) > > allyrs.interp <-

films on Desktops and roaming profiles
Hi, I'd like to ask you what do you limit Desktops syncing in case users put large files on them, e.g. films. Downloading / uploading such large files can generate lots of unnecessary traffic. Is there any kind of filtering possible ? Other solutions ? Cheers, -- Michal Kurowski perl -e '$_=q#: 13_2: 12/o{>: 8_4) (_4: 6/2^-2; 3;-2^\2: 5/7\_/\7: 12m m::#;

Help on finding specific columns in matrix
Dear All,   I have a matrix with 33 columns and 5000 rows. I would like to find 2 specific columns in the set: the one that holds the highest values and the one that holds the lowest values. In this case the column's mean would be apropriate to use to try to find those specific columns because each columns mean is different and they all change together based on the same "change of rate

Problems with MS Office (Excel/Word) & Samba 3.0.11, (moved to testing 3.0.12-RC1) attn Jerry
We are running with a little over 100GB of office data, and about 200GB misc other data shared to approximately 50 users using samba across two servers acting as PDC and BDC to Windows 2000 & XP Pro clients. Also using roaming profiles and ldap backend inclusive of nss_ldap and pam_ldap for the unix side - works well except for the more recent and horribly crippling MS Office bug. Tried

NT4 to Samba 3 Migration
I've done the net rpc vampire and gotten all the user and machine accounts from the NT server, I've test logged in, checked permissions, set groups, tested some of our odd apps and it all looks good. The problem I'm having is switching the desktops, and keeping the (non-roaming) profiles. I'd like to have it so everyone reboots their computer after the Samba switch over, and then

New PDC
Hi - I'm setting up a new Samba PDC here in a 30-person architectural office. The current PDC is running on an older computer and hasn't been updated in a while. The new PDC will be Samba 3.4.0 running on Ubuntu 9.10. We don't use roaming profiles. My question is this - is there a way to "seamlessly" migrate the desktops to the new PDC from the old one without

CentOS on new Thinkpads
Is anyone running CentOS on a newish Thinkpad? I have been using Linux as my primary workstation since about 97 and it seems like using Linux as a desktop has slipped over the years. After the Gnome desktop dumb-down, I have been nursing CentOS 6.8 on a 5 yo Toshiba. So I was hoping that someone has some recent real-world experience with new Thinkpads. So is anyone running a new Thinkpad? What

Desktops for non-roaming profiles
Hi list, In my current organization, we aren't going to be using roaming profiles (for various reasons, it's not desired). I'm moving us from no domain controller to Samba as a PDC (with an OpenLDAP backend), and I'm trying to make the process as invisible as possible to the end users. Each XP user's local desktop exists at: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>

Roaming Profiles not updating.
I'm finding our employees' roaming profiles are not being updated. They were initially created correctly, they copy down onto a new machine, but updates are not put back onto the server. I've also noticed that smbstatus does not show any open dat files, such as ntuser.dat. I would have assumed that these files would have been held open while the client was connected. Employees can

Logging-in takes 1 hour when changing computers
Hello all, I've got a simple active directory server set-up with 5 computers and about 5 users which works reasonably well, but recently, when an user changes to a different computer, it takes about a hour for the user to log in.  However, future log-ins on the same computer is pretty much instant, but the exact same problems occurs when the user changes computers - even to one

Samba 3, Windows XP SP1
Hello everyone, I am having a problem I can't find an answer to. Background: We had a RH 7.3/8.0 box with samba 2.2.7. Workstations were Windows 2000. We have 5 roaming users with laptops. when the roaming users would go home, they were able to log into the laptops without the presence of the domain (an yes, they were logging into the domain user at home). Current problem: Running RH 9.0

cached credentials local login -- notebook domain members
Hallo, I wonder if cached credentials local logins are expected to work with samba. I have users with notebooks that I want to be domain members. If the notebook is in the wild I want the users to use their profiles (either local or roaming) stored on the notebooks. But once disconnected from the network the users can't login. I found a thread:
