"hosts allow" in smb.conf expects only FQDN, not alias or netbios name!?
There is no way to specify allowed hosts in smb.conf as hostname alias
(from /etc/hosts file) or as netbios names (from lmhosts file). Is this
normal behavior? If so, what is lmhosts file used for?
Using configuration shown below, the only way to specify allowed hosts
in smb.conf is with hosts FQDN.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Example:
hosts allow = eclipse.lan # this is OK

compressed file VFS
Hallo,
we have a clinical system that generate lot of files that once written
are never changed. This file consume lot of disk and tape space*, so my
idea was to compress this files. The problem is that it can happen, that
the users have to open this files later.
Is there a VFS module for samba that show gzipped** read only files as
if they were standard files ?

Failed to verify incoming ticket! When clients use netbios names only!
Hi,
I have set up our samba box in 'ADS' mode; the problem I have is clients
connecting to the server can not do so by using its netbios name. Only when
they use the IP address of the machine are they able to be authenticated and
browse the box.
When clients connect via the netbios name this message will appear in my
samba logs with the IP of the connecting client;

"hide files" does not work
Hello,
in smb.conf on a share I did set
hide files=/*.pdf/*.PDF/*.p7m/*.P7M/
It works on a second level directory e.g. I don't see pdf files if they
are in i:\a\b
but see them on the 3th level i:\a\b\c
Is this a error in our samba 3.5.6 or is this a configuration problem ?
Thanks

Can't open shares using netbios names
I need a pointer to what Fine Manual I should go read to set up my
netbios name resolution, because all my attempts to use netbios names
are being resolved against dns ...
I have one subnet (192.168.2/24), with several Fedora 11 machines and
several Windows XP machines, and a couple SMB/CIFS NAS units which also
share printers. No domain, it's all just a workgroup. The WinXP machines

Hey geeks,
I have been reading several faqs and howtos now and haven't come very far
with what I really wanted to accomplish:
I have installed samba from the RH 7.2 distro rpm. I have set it up so I can
access my windows shares on the linux mashine. I can "ping athlon" (which is
the netbios-name for the win2k mashine) I can "ping linux" (which is
obviously my

Ubuntu, ping host by its NetBios name (Samba from sources) !
I have built from sources Samba4 4.4.4 version operation at Ubuntu 14.04
x64.
There are three daemons are started: nmbd, smbd, winbindd.
I excluded 'dns' from /etc/nsswitch.conf, 'host' line and added 'wins' .
When I try ping some of Lan host by NetBios, I get ping: unknown host
xxxxxx.
So, how is to make possible to ping host at Ubuntu 14.04 by NetBios name

All Windows clients are setup with the reference to the WINS server
nsswitch.conf setup: files wins dns
smb.conf setup: lmhosts wins host bcast
If I use IP adresses all works fine so it's clearly a name resolution
issue
Also bind9 DNS is installed (don't know if this matters)

name server problems: tcpdump shows "tcp port netbios-ssn unreachable"
Ahh, many sleepless nights spent on a stinky Windows 98 box!
I'm using Samba 2.2.0 with Red Hat Linux 7.1, and am having trouble
resolving the samba server. I went through the "fault tree" in the "Using
Samba" book, and this was the section I got stuck on. Do I need to be
running a name server besides nmbd? nmblookup returns some results:
