PDC for XP: empty desktop and desktop.ini showing up
Hello there, I'm trying to set up Samba as a PDC for Windows XP Professional (SP2). It seems to work fine. Machine accounts are created automatically, passwords between Unix and Samba users get synced, I can logon, profile directories are created - but there's a problem. I know that this is well-known, but it drives me crazy and I don't know any solution. First of all, the

Where are Windows file permissions stored and how to change them?
Hello there, where are the Windows file permissions (i.e. ACL) stored when using Samba? How can I change them from within Linux? Or is it only possible with the Windows file permissions dialogue? Thanks Florian

checking all folders for new mail (IMAP STATUS command)
Hello, I use Thunderbird as IMAP client and do a lot of server-side filtering with Sieve scripts. To be notified of new mails, I want to check all folders (a lot of them...) at once for new mails, and not only the inbox. According to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Checking_for_new_messages_in_other_folders_-_Thunderbird it should be sufficient to enable one setting -- given that the IMAP server

distribute/deploy software to clients
Hello, I run a Windows domain based on Samba 3 and I am searching for a way to distribute/deploy software to clients. I.e., a user logging on to a client, software should be automatically installed or upgraded. Is there any common solution? I heard of MSI packages, but I don't know if it is necessary to create MSI packages of all installations... Thanks Florian

'profiles' command with WinXP Profiles
Hi all, I have gotten the 'profiles' command to work for NT and Win2K profiles very well. In Windows XP, I am able to change the 'owner' but not the 'group' SID. It gives no errors but it just doesn't change them. A snippet of the profile in question is below: furnsrv:/data/samba/profiles/jon # profiles NTUSER.DAT |grep S-1-5 Owner SID: S-1-5-32-544 Group

encrypting connection to Samba
Hello, I've searched the Howtos, but I did not find anything, so I'm asking this question onlist. When are connections between Samba and the client encrypted? I run Samba 3.0.20a on a network with Windows XP SP2 and some Windows 98 machines. - Are connections always encrypted? Are there any smb.conf settings I have to make in order to get encryption working (server signing?)? - Are

purge maildir folder after sa-learn
Hello, I am looking for a command-line utility to automatically purge one Maildir folder. I want to periodically run sa-learn from cron, and after the spam learning folder has been added to the Bayes database, its contents should be deleted. I've searched a bit, but only found a few old utilities or some telnet+expect scripts, which both didn't look too reliable. Is there any

roaming profiles - one file can't be copied to server
Hi, i have a Ubuntu x64 10.04 Server. Samba configured as PDC. Since today i experience that roaming prfiles can't copy one file to the server and shout an error message. It's no specific file, mostly its one in my Thunderbird Profile. Does anybody know what could this cause to happen? My smb.conf: [global] printing = bsd netbios name = PDC server string = PDC (%h)

Roaming Profile gets deleted
Hi there, I try to move our W2K Domain to samba. I managed to dump a list of the old users with its SID's and created them on the samba domain which has the same sid like the old W2k domain. Then the users should be able to use their old roaming profile without changing the profiles sid. This works if the computer which acesses the domain has already the profile on its disk. If the

Copying profiles to a new samba server
Well I had to set up Samba on a new server and everything seem to went pretty well for the most part but now when I try to log on the domain it gives me an error message saying it couldn't load the profile on the server. What I did was set up new server with pretty much the same configuration, then one evening when there was nobody here I copied all the profiles and other stuff from the old

Roaming profiles and case sensitivity
Hi, Yesterday I found big problems concerning my roaming profiles. They seem to work on some computers where they are always used, on some other the did not load properly (i.e. a default profile was loaded instead). After some debugging with userenv.log I found the very strange problem: case sensitivity for ntuser.dat!: [...] IsCentralProfileReachable: Testing <F:\testuser\ntuser.dat>

Windows 7 often creates new user profiles
Hi, we're using Samba 3.5.6 (Debian). Windows 7 clients often create new roaming profiles for existing users for no identifiable reason. Windows XP isn't affected. Is this a known problem? - Chris

mandatory profiles
Hello! I am running samba 3.0 on fc2 in a win2000 network. I want to use only mandatory profiles in the network, but can't get this to work properly. I have set up a "perfect user" on my local machine", and copied this profile to \\server\netlogon\Default User. I have also made this default profile mandatory by renaming ntuser.dat to ntuser.man. In smb.conf I have added:

security with normal profiles
Following TOSHARG and "Samba 3 by examples" I implemented Folder redirection plus some security restrictions by building a custom NTUSER.DAT which is the default profile of my users. The problem is that each user has read/write access to its profile share therefore he can replace its NTUSER.DAT. This is why I chose mandatory profiles. Is there another solution? The problem with

Can't do roaming profiles
I need a little advice on finishing off a Samba PDC. I have Samba 3.0.0RC1 installed and working as a PDC on a Redhat AS 3.0 machine. It authenticates users nicely but the "roaming" profiles don't work. Tailing the samba log, I see the an attempt to access the users ntuser.dat file, which doesn't exist before the first logon, when logging in. The profile directory

setting options before user logs on via policies
Hello, is it possible to set options before a user logs on via policies, or does this depend on active directory? I would like to set things like screensaver at logon dialogue, ctrl-alt-del requirement, clear last user at logon, etc., but it seems to be impossible using policies. A workaround I can think of is doing that via MSI files. Any tip is welcome. :-) Florian

Still mandatory profiles, every user same profile
Hi there, again me, again similar question. First of all, what is it, what I'd like to have: 1.) Every user in my System should use the same profile. In dsa.msc I gave every user as profile-path \\samba4\profiles\stud 2.) The users should not be able to change anything in that profile (I think changing ntuser.dat to ntuser.man should do the job, proposed i got step one managed ;) )
