Upgrading Samba 3 to Samba 4 with Active Directory at many sites
First, background information. We are a large (geographically local)
organization with 50 sites, including our HQ. Each site has a Debian Server
running Samba in NT-Domain Controller mode. Each site is independant of the
next, but are all named <SITE>.example.com. The workstations are connected,
and working fine in our sites with the single servers.
We had a recent network upgrade that now

AD across sites
Hi Guys,
Just need some guidance regarding AD across sites. We have two sites, siteA and siteB. Until about a month ago both sites were running NT4 domains, separate domains but with the same names, let's say thedomain. We classicupgrades siteA to AD and now need to migrate siteB to AD.
The sites are connected with a WAN link
We think ,the steps involved will be the following

badly mangled names from certain old apps
I just took on a new client who is having a curious problem with mangled
names. Here's the history as I understand it:
Originally they were on an NT server and there was no issue.
My predecessor moved them to a samba server running on gentwo. I do not know
what version of samba or how he moved the data, but when he did so, any files
and folders with more than 8 characters started

Machine account found and not found in 3.0.2
Brad,
I found your posting of 2/20/2004 with the subject line of
"upgraded to 3.0.2 -> funkyness in machine accounts" while investigating a
similar problem.
I upgraded to 3.0.2 last week from 3.0.0.
I have a system which I just added to the domain successfully. However, when I
attempt to log a domain user onto that machine, I get this error:
The system cannot log you on to

Recursive file hieararchy with order precedence
Hello,
Consider the following;
You have a number of sites, all controlled by puppet. You have
identified which files that are common to every host, and then which
files are common to any particular site. Finally, you have the files
which are private to the node in question.
What I was wondering was if it would be possible to have some sort of
directory hierarchy which has some kind of

Custom fact errors
I''m a newbie attempting to get a custom fact distributed to clients.
I''ve followed the instructions at http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/AddingFacts
and based my first fact on a simple recipe.
I''m having at least one problem and possibly more.
1) Puppet/facter fails to load the custom fact, complaining that "non-

Numeric ids
HI,
I had read from the rsync man page on transferring files using the user's
numeric id and gid. I have a user which resides on 2 remote sites, having
the same user names, but different uid and gid on both sites. I'm
transferring the files as a root user.

AD across sites
Hi Rowland,
Let?s say due to number of machines involved, it is not practical to drop them off the NT4 domain all at once. We are thinking are two possible options
- VLAN the ports and only allow certain machines to talk to serverb
- Or use the host deny and host allow in smb.conf, example
Host allow 10.10.10.5
Host deny 10.10.10.0
Preferably the second one

Migrating Data from Many Databases to One
I had some concerns about breaking Rails table relationships (:has_many,
:has_and_belongs_to_many, :belongs_to, :acts_as_*, etc) when moving multiple
databases (using the same application) into one.
I seem to be stuck when trying to wrap my head around a good database design
for what I would like to do or if I am just completely not thinking
straight. I guess this isn''t related

Thanks for the feedback about my Shorewall evaluation
I''ve published a blog today covering general things I''ve observed about
the way to combine Shorewall with strongSwan:

nmbd dying
nmbd has been dying on me occasionally. I'm running mandrake 9.2 with
samba3-server-3.0.0-2mdk. We've got our users in ldap but I'd seen this
symptom previously when I was using an earlier version of samba that didn't
support ldap. There is nothing useful in the logs and a PS shows a nmb
process still running.
This last time around, I had a ptrace running on both nmbd
