On 3.0.2 and 3.0.3pre1 (AIX 5.2), we are having an issue here short names
are not consistently lower-cased with winXP/SP1 client authed as the
listed admin user or any other valid user. Samba compiled with
-D_ALL_SOURCE and -D_LINUX_SOURCE_COMPAT. Later in the show just
-D_ALL_SOURCE.

Samba lock X Unix fcntl() lock
Hi
I look at list archives and at samba docs but I did not found ...
please can some one help me?
I have to write a unix program that need to check if it can write to a file and place the apropriate locks before write. Those files are in a Samba share. I intend to use fcntl() function to check and set the locks.
I wrote a test program to see if the fcntl() function can see the samba locks

Hashing for short pathnames
Hi,
using samba 2.2.5-UL (on a SuSE-SLOX-System) we have to mangle long pathnames
to short ones. We need this for some of our apps which generate batch-files
(*.bat) for compilation.
Normally this works correctly, exept for a directory named
"Only_for_generation". This directory is mangled into "Only_~%0" (it' s NULL
at the end). And this is the problem. In

Can't get 8.3 filenames to lower the case
Hi,
I seem to have some trouble on default lowering the case on 8.3
filenames. I use the following settings but sometimes I still get a
8.3-compliant file with uppercased chars in my unix filesystem.
default case = lower
case sensitive = no
preserve case = yes
short preserve case = no
mangle case = no
mangling method = hash2
Any thoughts?

This is probably your problem. You override the default mangling method
in samba3 from hash2 to hash. hash2 behaves more like Windows mangling.

Either take this line out or change it to hash2. You may need to

Samba 2.0 and MS Access DB
I installed samba on an Intel based Server running Red Hat 5.2. I can
access files on the shares I created but I run into a problem accessing
a database program written in MS Access. It seems that only one person
at a time can open the database. I get an error of "File is already in
use" .
What are the optimal settings for accessing MS Access in a multi-user
application?

smbmount doesn't preserve case?
I attempted to run the Linux install of Mathematica by smbmounting the
CD-ROM from an NT box. I could see the CD just fine, but all the
filenames were in uppercase. Linux/Unix doesn't like that. Is there a
way to tell smbmount to preserve case?
Looking at the man page it says that smbmount is a wattered down version
of smbclient. I sure don't see how. smbclient doesn't mount the

hash2 mangling alghorithm
I just want to warn people that want to use the new hashing algorithm
for mangled names.
And that note should also be put in the man page IMO.
You must understand that changing the hashing algorithm on a production
server may have unwanted side effects (this is why we maintain by
default hash and not hash2 and why it was not back ported to 2.2
initially).
Windows clients may save all around

Case Sensitivity vs. Case Preservation
Hi John,
I recently wrote a little internal article in HP to try to graphically show
the difference between case sensitivity and case preservation (Unix is case
sensitive, NT only 'preserves case'). Perhaps this will help you understand
it better, and configure your Samba server to do what you want. It was
originally a ms word document format, so you may have to fiddle around with

badly mangled names from certain old apps
I just took on a new client who is having a curious problem with mangled
names. Here's the history as I understand it:
Originally they were on an NT server and there was no issue.
My predecessor moved them to a samba server running on gentwo. I do not know
what version of samba or how he moved the data, but when he did so, any files
and folders with more than 8 characters started

Hi list,
it's me again. I have 2 samba servers, one as a PDC, the other as a file
server.
I can now join the domain. But it's impossible to mount the smb shares.
The 2 servers are listening on several private networks, using vlans.
10.16.41.0/24 is a routed network, all over the campus. The others are
just nated through a FreeBSD box.
All dns datas are ok and uptodate

Multiple grub2 Users with Passwords
Hello All,
I am trying to set multiple users with passwords for modifying grub2
menu entries at boot. I know I can set a "root" user grub2 password with
grub2-setpassword. I have also been able to make a grub2 user password
using the grub2-mkpasswd-pbkdf2 command and adding
??? set superusers="user1"
to the /etc/grub.d/40_custom file. However, I have multiple user
