CentOS on Dell Inspiron 640m laptop
I ordered and just received today a new Dell Inspiron 640m laptop (it also goes by the name E1405). Anyone tried installing CentOS on this laptop? It's the wireless drivers I'm most concerned about; it's got the Dell 1390 internal wireless card (not the Intel wireless). Anyone have some feedback, on the wireless or any other issues, on running CentOS on this laptop? Thanks Paul

Which external WiFi device for laptop running CentOS 5.3?
Have decided to give up on the embedded Broadcom 4312 wireless device in my son's Dell laptop. I get WEP open authentication to work, but nothing else. I was about to dump the bcm43xx kernel module and the bcm43xx-microcode5.fw firmware and work with the newer b43 module and associated firmware. However, he claims that at school, he has always had intermittent problems with wireless under

Can't get ipw2200 to work in CentOS 5 on Dell laptop
I've installed ipw2200-firmware-3.0-3.nodist.rf from RPMForge using yum OK. I've loaded the ipw modules with /sbin/modprobe ipw2200 and then /sbin/lsmod | grep ipw which gives: ipw2200 136873 0 ieee80211 33417 1 ipw2200 However, when I run system-config-network I don't see Intel Coporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG (eth1) in the list of adapters. Also, when I

In the market for a new (old) laptop
Changes at my day job (we have a big merger being finalized), has me in the market for a new laptop. They may require me to only run the approved XP build on the system they provide. I do not know if they will fund another unit for me or not, so I am looking to go cheap. Here is what I am looking for: Runs Centos (duh!) Supports Suspend to memory as well as to disk. Bootable from

Network configuration: desktop vs. laptop
Hi, I'm just migrating some stuff from Slackware Linux to CentOS, and I have a question about the orthodox way of configuring a network connection. On a desktop or workstation, I usually get rid of NetworkManager: # systemctl stop NetworkManager # yum remove NetworkManager Then I edit the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-XXXXX file corresponding to my network interface. Here's

CentOS 7.2 laptop wireless Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 2230 (rev c4)
Hi John, Thank you, elrepo sounds good to know about -- http://elrepo.org/tiki/About says is an extra repository for hardware support. Still not clear how to troubleshoot the problem so I know what to install from elrepo. I know that a spec file is involved in creating an RPM file; do you mean that you make your own kernel RPM? With CentOS 7.2 a laptop wireless card is recognized in dmesg, but nonfunctional. Toggling the hardware wifi switch causes the Bluetooth icon to appear and disappear. The network configuration window shows the Wireless tab greyed out. Rebooting with the bluetooth enabled does not help. It appears the appropriate driver is iwlwifi, which is what works in Fedora and appears to be available and

CentOS 5.3 - Activating laptop wireless card
I've just installed CentOS 5.3 on my Dell laptop and it seems to have detected and set-up my wireless card (BCM 4311) correctly as eth1. However, so far I haven't been able to activate it and have read the wiki http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/Wireless#head-320d6fcf09b7e16e0b15d19ef76adcb023a95938 which indicates that this card isn't actually supported in CentOS - but there has

Laptop and NFS homedir
Afternoon, Are there any documented best practices for using NFS home directories on laptops? Right now, and this is on CentOS 7, when I disconnect the machine from the network, the desktop freezes, and I can't even tell if the machine switches to the wireless network. If this sort of adapter switching, which is standard in e.g. Windows 10, is even supported. Thanks for any insights.

Changing tables within rails app
Hi, I want to know if my idea is possible within the rails framework. I want to write a rails app that uses the same code to manage two classes of widgets; "wired widgets" and "wireless widgets". For the most part, all the code to manage these two classes of widgets will be identical. The only differing part are some of the underlying field names in each respective db table

Cannot Authenticate to Samba Shares after switching laptop from wired to wireless nic.
I have a laptop that I need to be able to connect to my samba shares with its wired connection and its wireless connection. It works fine when connecting from the wired ethernet connection but it stops working once I disable the wired connection and connect to the wireless network (both networks are on the same subnet). The IP address for the wired connection is 192.168.1.112
