Remote subnet browsing using Samba for WINS.
Been experimenting with Samba as a WINS server.
Need a WINS server as I am using VPN tunneling.
My goal was to set up a central WINS server and have all the computers
talk to it for NetBIOS name resolution.
In the end I was hoping to have only one Samba server.
I have currently worked with:
Samba 2.2.7B on a uclinux.
Samba 3.0.10 on RedHat.
Samba 3.0.10 on Slackware.
Samba 3.0.10 on FreeBSD.

Understanding the role of DMB/LMB on a net that has a WINS server
If I have a client that wants to enumerate and access shares on a
subnet, and that client knows the IP of the WINS server, is there any
need for the client to use the "browsing" services of a DMB or LMB?
What is the order of operations of the client? Here is what I imagine
to be the case:
1. client asks LMB for a list of all available shares
2. LMB sends client the list of all known

SAMBA Browse Lists Sync DMB and LMB
Hello !
I have a problem of syncing browse lists between

simple cross-network browsing setup is failing
PROBLEM: Cross-subnet browsing is not working. Browse lists on all machines
contain only the machines on the local subnet.
SUMMARY OF ANALYSIS: The Local Master Browser (LMB) running Windows XP (ZAYIN)
never contacts the Domain Master Browser (DMB) running
Samba (BETH) to initiate a synchronization of browse
lists.

LMB and browse.dat Updates
I realize this is most likely the most killed topic anyone on the net. Most
of the information i've found don't directly answer this question.
I have a Samba server set up as the DMB and LMB via smb.conf. I have set up
nmbd to do WINS. I setup all my XP box clients to use my Samba server.
I ran Ethereal on the server and can see the Samba server wins election for
DMA and LMB. I can

Windows NT PDC and Samba PDC cross subnet browsing?
Hello,
I have been searching for answers now more then a week, but I cannot find a
proper solution.
Please help me with this:
Scenario:
Two differnet subnetted networks (1 and 2) connected by a cipe tunnel
between two linux Samba boxes over the internet.
On network one (1) is a Windows NT PDC installed which currently is the DMB
for it's domain (1).

lmb can't sync browse list with dmb, find_domain_master_name_query_fail
Hello.
Browsing accross subnets fails because "route2-3" can't sync its
local browse list with the domain master browser "classix", which
is also the WINS server. Everything else is fine. There is 1 and
only 1 WINS server (classix) and no NT server.
The error message in nmb log of route2-3 is:

Re: Windows NT PDC and Samba PDC cross subnet browsing? (solved)
Hi everyone,
I think I solved it:
- I installed WINS on both sides on the PDC's (Samba on the one end, NT on
the other).
- On both subnets the clients are configured by dhcp to use their own PDC's
WINS as their primairy WINS server and the WINS on the remote PDC as their
"secondairy" WINS server.
- TCPIP configuration on the Windows NT PDC configured to use it's own WINS

Samba WINS Questions
Hi,
I'm using Samba 3.0.21c with PDC and severals BDC in different subnets.
I'm triing to use Wins servers on all the BDC servers and on the PDC.
The problems occurs in the network browsing.
I'm able to see all computers with the PDC on the different subnets but
I just can see local servers in the network neighborhood on BDC
When starting BDC i've got the "unable to find

Multiple workgroups : Multiple Subnets
I am still trying to make samba work over a WAN with multiple workgroups
although I am just about to throw in the towel. I had hoped to find a solution
that would permit a Windows PC to browse a (MS) workgroup (ie retrieve the
browse list from the workgroup master browser for a remote (MS) workgroup when
that MB is NOT a samba server). Since WINS only provides the broadcast
address of the remote

WINS server DMB and LMBs not communicating across subnet to update browse lists?
Referencing: http://www.linuxtopia.org/online_books/network_administration_guides/samba_reference_guide/17_NetworkBrowsing_34.html
I've got two subnets (192.168.2.1 and 192.168.1.1). All the machines on both subnets are running XP Home or Pro and are all part of the same workgroup (WORKGROUP).
I've added an OpenSUSE box on x.x.2.1 and have set it as the WINS server with a very simple

causing LMB elections
I've been running samba servers with 200+ W98 machines for
some time. I'm changing to W2k and everything was going fine.
I've upgraded 40 boxes. One W2k box has started announcing itself
as a local master browser for one of the workgroups. A samba
server thinks it is master, forcing election. Samba will stop
being the LMB for about 3 minutes and then will re-establish
itself as

Functionality of Nmbd at Active Directory mode of Samba4 !

I agree, but for most of users T talked with, via friendly name
(NetBios) but not quite long (DNS) is more comfortable.

How is to stop Windows to be DMB if Samba4 standalone server is set up for DMB role !
There is Windows 2008R2 actng as DC and Samba4 4.5.2 acting as standalone
server in the same network.
Samba4 is set up to be DMB:
domain master = yes
local maser= yes
browse list = yes
os level = 254
preferred master = yes
enhanced browsing = yes
Windows 2008R2 includes also DMB role in itself.
As following, if Windows boots first, before Samba starts, it becomes DMB
and has workgroup<1b>

Help needed! tricky browsing configuration and BUG_REPORT
hi there,
can please anybody help me solve my little problem ? I have about a dozen
separated
networks connected to my local lan via isdn dial-up (on-demand). I am
running linux
kernel 2.0.36 and samba 2.0.0 (2.0.2 doesn't work either). There is a
linux-box running
samba 2.0.0 connected to every remote network. The Clients are always
Win95/Win98/WinNT.
Local browsing seems to work perfectly.
