Specifying Browser Computers
When you start a computer running Windows 2000, the browser service looks in
the registry for the entry MaintainServerList to determine whether a
computer will become a browser. MaintainServerList is found in the following
registry subkey:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters
Table I.1 shows the values to which MaintainServerList

Samba WINS Server losing all elections against
Hello everybody.
I've been trying for weeks to find a solution for my problem, but since
I couldn't find anything, here I am.
I manage a network of about 200 PCs, 90% windows XP and Vista, 10% linux.
A samba server is located on the main server, acting as a WINS server,
to manage the list of connected computers.
However, when a resident computer is badly configured (ie no wins server

Problem with master browser, Vista kills network neighbourhood
I have a Samba Server 3.0.23a running on a Fedora 4.
Since Vista entered my lan I've been having problems with
master browser elections. When a Vista client connects to my
workgroup it kills the network neighbourhood and the only
machines seen is the vista client and my fileserver.
By changing the regedit entries on the client side following

Browsing with 1.9.18p7 and WfW 3.11
Hi
We are using a Debian 1.3.1 server (two Ethernet-Cards) with 18
Clients. The Clients remote-boot from the server using
mars_nwe(Novell-Server emulation). Under Windows (WfW 3.11) the Clients
user the Microsoft 32-bit Tcp-Stack to access the samba-server( 1.9.18p7).
The problem is that the clients can't see the samba-server in their
browse-lists, nor can they access the server with net

I've read too many articles and posts on "domain master browser",
"computer master browser", "NT domain browser", "PDC and BDCs", etc.
etc. and I've managed to confuse my shrinking brain over this. I
apologize in advance if I'm posting a redundant question (I've looked
thru archivers best I could) or posting to the wrong place.

tinc and wireless mesh
Hello!
I'm trying to make a wireless mesh network with b.a.t.m.a.n. protocol,
and I would like to secure the wireless links with tinc. My test network
is 2 wireless routers with OpenWRT Kamikaze firmware, and the network
topology is the following:

causing LMB elections
I've been running samba servers with 200+ W98 machines for
some time. I'm changing to W2k and everything was going fine.
I've upgraded 40 boxes. One W2k box has started announcing itself
as a local master browser for one of the workgroups. A samba
server thinks it is master, forcing election. Samba will stop
being the LMB for about 3 minutes and then will re-establish
itself as

how to stop WfWG local browse master announcements?
this isn't strictly a samba question, but it is related in that i'm trying
to a samba server as my domain master browser and multiple samba servers
as local master browsers for a workgroup across multiple subnets.
everything seems to be working wonderfully except for one WfWG host
which does not show up in the browse list as expected. i notice that
this host is announcing itself as a

local master browser
Hi list,
I have a network with a Linux server, running samba 2.2.x,
and 10 Workstation. 3 of the workstation are Win2000 and
the rest is Win98 and WinME.
In the logfiles I see that every 10 Minutes the Win2000
Workstations are forcing a election to become the local master
browser for the network. The server wins the election each time
but there is still a small amount of time (maybe 4 minutes)

Master Browser
I am using samba-1.9.18p10 in a Redhat 5.1 Linux box.
I have a short question, i.e.
Is it true that once the nmbd is running and becoming the Master Browser,
others win95 clients will not act as Master Browser anymore ?

Problem with network browsing
SMBv1 (the anonymous thing behind network neighborhood) because of the massive
security problems it caused was decprecated. Microsoft came up with network
neighborhood and they've shut it down due to their bad implementation.
Samba, likewise, doesn't support SMBv1 by default.

Problem with network browsing
If you have 1 member server, you could enabe nmbd in that server.
Or install : llmnrd on linux and/or avahi-deamon if you dont have a member.
And make sure you can use "proxy dns" as in,
The primary DNS domain on linux should match (see in windows) CMD: ipconfig /all
The :
- primay dns suffix
- DNS Suffix search order
Then you are able to use \\hostname or \\hostname.FQ.DN.TLD

Problem with network browsing
A reasonable alternative is to run Christgau's excellent Web Service Discovery host daemon (wsdd) on the samba server and make sure
the Function Discovery Provider Host and Function Discovery Resource Publication services are running on the Windows 10 machines.
Get wsdd from here: https://github.com/christgau/wsdd.git
You can then stop and disable the nmbd on the samba machines as it's

cross subnet browsing (win Xp problem)
I've got to networks connected through leased line, routing set between
networks, WINS server running on Samba.
There's one primary samba server, and Win98/WinXP clients connected to it.
First network with samba server works great with win98 and winxp.
Second network also works ok with win98 clients, but when I connect Winxp
it can't even open "my network places" and show

browser problem
The browsing capability in Network Neighborhood disppears periodically.
Usually, double-clicking on Network Neighborhood gives us a list of all
the NT and Unix/samba boxes on the network segment (i.e. in the
Workgroup). When browsing disppears, all we see is *Entire Network*,
which has nothing in it.
We run a unix/NT network with 6 unix servers and about 80 NT clients. We

problems with Windows XP clients becoming local master?
Hi there. First time posting to this but I'm getting desperate so apologies
for any netiquette faux pas...
I'm running a Suse box with Samba on it, with Windows XP SP2 clients viewing
it in a workgroup. Some pc's are having timeouts when attempting to view a
network share though. In the logs, sometimes at the same time as the
timeouts, this appears:

Samba PDC + WinXP = problems fetching remote profiles
Hi, everybody!
I have 20 WinXP client machines and a sever running
Samba (first try was with 2.2.8, now it's 3.0.0rc1).
If it matters to someone (for statistics, fun or for
understanding the problem), i use Slackware 9.0 Linux,
kernel 2.4.20 on server (and clients are XPpro/SP1,
buld 2600 as far as i remember). I almost had no
problems configuring samba for browsing and fortunately

Problem with network browsing
I'm trying to diagnose why my windows 10 clients can't do network browsing.
The network neighborhood doesn't show any of my machines running samba.
I've verified that all of my samba hosts are running nmbd!
I've reached the end of my ability to debug this, so I could really use
some help from the list to figure out why this isn't working.
I've isolated the situation
