AIX 4.3.3 smbd won't start
Hello, I have just downloaded Samba 2.2.7.a and I have tried to set it up on AIX 4.3.3 and am not having luck. Last week I installed samba on my linux machine and it works pretty well. The boss asked on Friday if I could set it up on my AIX machine. I have samba installed in /usr/local/samba. After running /usr/local/samba/smbd -D and /usr/local/samba/nmbd -D I can do this ps -aef |

cannot start smbd on AIX 5.3
Help please. I am in the process of configuring Samba 3.0.14a onto 4 AIX 5.3 systems. It seems to be working OK on 3 of the 4, but on the last one, I cannot start smbd. nmbd seems to start fine. The smb.conf file matches the other servers except that the server name is changed. Here's the error showing up on the log.smbd file. [2007/05/02 15:19:47, 0] smbd/server.c:main(835) standard

smbd does not run from inetd
Hello, I've a problem with Samba version 2.0.6, where smbd does not start from inetd. nmbd starts from inetd and "smbd -D" works fine as well. And I didn't have that problem with 2.0.4b. The following is an extraction of the smb.log, which shows an "read_socket_data: recv failure for 4. Error = Invalid argument" error. Regarding this problem, what is the difference

smbd crash
A few times in the last couple months we have had our production Samba 3.0.14a-1server crash. We did not have detailed logging turned on at the time so the attached output of our log is the best process tracking I can give at the time of the crash. What will happen is our shares will no longer be accessible, and all the smbd processes will be hung. We can ssh to the server and do a restart

R version update utility
Hi, O wrote a small bash script that performs unattended upgrades of R. It has fit my purposes but I'd like to submit it to the community so it can be enhanced and widely useful. There is some redundancy in code and this will be addressed soon. Almost every action is logged but the main action of each step is logged only in case of error. Each run will produce a different log file. It can

n00b rsyslog.conf question - how to separate local syslog from network appliance syslog?
I have several network appliances, and I want aggregate their syslog output for later analysis. Eventually I might think about a Splunk box, but for the interim I'm hoping to just build a CentOS 6 syslog server and have it aggregate everything on it for quick review. I installed rsyslog and am looking through the /etc/rsyslog.conf file for what I configure to (a) listen for syslog input from

R as shelll script
Hi, I have devised some applications of R as a scripting shell language and started using it flawlessly a few months ago. Never minded publishing it because it looked so obvious. However, a search in the archives revealed there is no recent easy-to-use method proposed. The latest reference I found is from 2006 (http://finzi.psych.upenn.edu/R/Rhelp02a/archive/81124.html) and even a c wrapper

Syslog timezone issue
We recently upgraded (as in, backup, reinstall, selective restore) a couple of servers from CentOS-3.9 to CentOS-5.1. This generally went smoothly but we've encountered one confusing problem with syslog. Under CentOS-3, syslog entries were always dated in the host local timezone. With CentOS-5.1, they're dated in UTC *most* of the time, but occasionally in the local timezone. This has

syslog strangeness
I'm setting up a server and noticed syslog has stopped putting messages into secure, maillog, and messages. syslog.conf is stock, and both it and klogd are running. This occurred around the same time I put the IPTables config in the box, but disabling iptables doesn't seem to make any difference. I'm doing things that should generate traffic to those files. Cron jobs have also

RFC: ext3 ability to syslog its actions
Forgive me if this has been discussed. I'm new to the list. I've just today installed ext3 .5d in my machine. All drives (including '/'). I like it! However, I'm curious about what it's doing. I don't know C, so telling me to read source won't help. I'm wondering if it would make sense to provide a facility (probably at the VFS level so that all filesystems

ssyslogd (encryped syslog)
I was wondering if any one has had any experiance using ssyslogd. http://www.core-sdi.com/ssyslog/ Secure Syslog v1.21 I have read a bit about it, but have been unable to find any good linux reference. I was wondering if people have been using it with any success. And if not, are there any other encrypted syslog solutions out there? [mod: Please reply to Mark, he'll summarize in about a
