Slow browsing from Win2k and WinXP
Hi, I have Samba 3.0.14a + OpenLDAP 2.2.24 installed on Solaris 8 as a PDC for serving files only (no profiles, no printing). Performance of network browsing is slow in Windows 2000 and XP, taking 10-15 seconds to open and display the contents of a folder. The same browsing activity from a Mac works fine with no unacceptable delays. I'm trying to sell Samba here, but these delays are

smbldap-tools broken pipe
Hi, I am working on establishing a Samba+LDAP server with management by the smbldap tools from idealx. Versions are Samba 3.0.14a, OpenLDAP 2.2.24, smbldap tools 0.8.8 all on Solaris 8. I'm thinking I have a problem with my perl (perhaps), version 5.8.5, as I keep getting "Broken pipe" messages when using smbldap-populate, smbldap-groupadd, etc. Google produced no useful

Windows 8.1 Join Domain
I have Samba 3.6.6 configured as a domain controller, but am unable to get new machines to join the domain. I've set the WINS on these machines in the IPv4 network configuration and get as far as entering my samba (ldap) credentials, but the whirlything spins for a while then says it cannot contact the domain, domain does not exist. If a machine had already been part of the domain when it

some cannot join domain
Hi, I have some machines (winXP and win2k) that cannot join my domain. Others I have joined to the domain. I am using the smbldap-tools 0.8.9 with an add machine script as follows: add machine script = /usr/local/samba/sbin/smbldap-useradd -w "%u" The LDAP entity gets created with objectClasses top, inetOrgPerson, and posixAccount. My impression is that samba then comes

protocol negotiation failed
Hello guys, I have got my samba server as PDC run and it worked well. I could see the machine in a windows explorer and the linux/samba users could login into the windows. Now, suddenly, I can't see samba server in windows explorer any more, but linux users can still log into the windows machines. I can ping from the samba server and it works. When I run #smbclient -L localhost I get the

SMB service not starting automatically
The smb service is not starting automatically. I can type service smb start at the prompt and it loads, and I can then connect, but its not loading automatically as it used to. Can someone point me in the right direction as what file I need to change to make it load at startup. Thanks! Liz

PLEASE HELP! Can't add machines to domain!
I have spent days now trying to debug why I can not add machines to the domain. I am using samba 3.0.23c with an openldap backend. I can authenticate fine using smbclient with the administrator account but when I go to add a machine it fails. I have checked the debug logs and know what is happening, I am just not sure why or how to fix it. I am using the idealx scripts to add machines.

nightmare scenario
Hi All, I am trying to test an upgrade to the operating system on my file server. I am going from RHEL 5 32-bit to Debian 7.8 64-bit. Samba is also being moved from 3.0.33 to 3.6.6. My initial attempt on an existing Debian 7.8 machine seems to work fine. I am able to smbclient with an LDAP user and see the shares. A fresh install of Debian on another test machine is where the nightmare

password server vs. passdb
Hi, Is it possible to run a non-PDC file server which references an authentication server via the "password server" directive as a BDC to the PDC? In short, I have one machine that serves as the LDAP auth server and PDC for my domain. I have another machine that is the file server and uses the aforementioned "password server" directive to authenticate users. Now, I would

Joining XP clients to a Samba PDC
Greetings, I've been pulling my hair out on this problem for several days and I'm not really any closer to a solution. I hope someone out there can help me. I'm trying to set up a samba PDC on a Fedora Core 2 box using an LDAP backend (on another server). The base install of everything is working fine. At the unix level LDAP connectivity is configured and working properly for

Labeling charts within a loop
Hi All: This may turn out to be very simply, but I can't seem to add the name of the school to a chart. The loop I created is below that subsets a dataframe and creates a chart for each school based on certain variables. As it stands now, they title includes the school's ID number. Instead, I want to replace this with the school's actual name, which is stored in a variable called

NT Crashes when doing large network file Xfers (was Re: NT crashes during smbtar)
Ok.. Just for the record, I STAND CORRECTED! The problem does appear to be NT.. The thing that irritated me was that nobody was interested in giving any backup data! Everyone just wanted to blindly admit that it must be NT. Ok.. Enuf bitching.. On to the better stuff... Anyway, David Mansfield and I are trying to narrow down the machine configurations where this happens.. Currently, we've

more on ailing printer system
I cranked the debug level to 10. Below is a transcript from the client log file of a client trying to open a Properties dialog for the HP 4500 printer. I am puzzled as to why Samba would be looking for a user with the name of a printer. Is this normal behavior? Anyway, about a minute after the last log entry below, the client showed a dialog "Printer properties cannot be

writing processes are blocking in log_wait_common with data=ordered
I have a system with many processes writing to a common data file using pwrite. These processes are each writing to existing blocks in the file, not changing the file size, and the file has no holes. When the processes get going, they seem to bottleneck at log_wait_common (according to ps alnx). That is, one process is uninterruptible in log_wait_common, the rest are uninterruptible in down.
