"Well-known Windows RIDs" vs. UIDs/GIDs
Hey all, I'm looking to merge multiple NT4 domains into a single infrastructure based on Samba3 and OpenLDAP on Linux of the Debian Sarge flavour (and, Bob willing, Samba4 before long). In order to allow some resources to be shared from a single Linux instance, I'm rather hoping that I can put every domain's information into a single LDAP DIT. The Samba PDCs will use only portions of

Question about SIDs RIDs UIDs and GIDs
Hi Guys, Just a quick one...I use ldap backend for samba users and unix(PAM+NSS) users. If I was creating a new user/group/computer manually do the RID and UID/GID have to match up somehow or something?? I mean I've been reading somewhere that that RID should be somethings like UID+2x1000 or something?? Algorithmicbase?? Whats this all about? Am I making any sense? Cheers, Rhys

uids/gids changed after upgrade from 3.021c to 3.023
Hi All, Yesterday, I've upgraded my Samba server from 3.021c to 3.023 through yum upgrade samba*. I'm running Fedora Core 4 Kernel 2.6.17-1.2142 on this server. After upgrade has been completed, I lost the attributes of ownership and groups. I noticed that the uids/gids have changed for all AD accounts. This means that users can't have total access for their files and no access

matching UIDs to RIDs when converting from Windows to Samba
I have a bunch of Windows users using a Win2k server as a PDC. I want to move all the server functions to a Samba server without disturbing the users in any way. The client machines are all Win2k, using local profiles. Samba insists on algorithmicly generating the RID from the UID, so the Windows user, after migration, gets a new SID and loses contact with their local profile. In fact, they

Problems with samba password file
Hi, On a Fedora box we installed Samba 3.0.8pre1-0.pre1.3 Accidently we've removed the samba password file. Now, we can't get access to Samba anymore. Is there a way to re-create it ? Or do we have to reinstall Samba ? BTW: We have no backup .... cheers, Andy

Best way to generate Unix UIDs and GIDs?
Hi, For a new samba domain, I need to create users and groups with Unix UIDs and GIDs. In the future, it is possible that there will be a trust with other domains, so I need to take care that there won't be any UID/GID conflict. Also, I assume that in the future Samba will be able to restore deleted objects, so I need to avoid conflicts with those objects as well. This makes me think that a

samba3.0.10
Hi Jerry/Samba Team I have Samba 3.0.10 installed on Solaris8 server and Samba-client-2.2.10 installed on Linux Red Hat2.1AS servers The Linux servers use Samba to mount filesystems from Solaris8 server. My question is how to find out on the Solaris8 server which Linux servers are using Samba to mount from. Because it is hideous to go to every Linux server and see which Solaris8 server they are

SIDs and UIDs and RIDs - Oh My!
I'm trying to grasp pg. 154 of the "Official SAMBA-3" book by Terpstra and Vernooij and I'm just missing a critical networking concept. I understand that SIDs are the numerical identification of a user for the Windows world. I understand that UIDs are the equivalent for the *nix world. But what the @$@! is a Relative IDentifier (RID)?!? On page 153 the command to map a

BDC problem!? user can't get profile/map drive
Hello: I have set up a PDC using Samba 3.0.11 with openldap 2.2.23. I have set up a BDC as well (the smb.conf is same as those on PDC except the nebios name as "BDC" and the domain master is set as "no"). Then I try to shut down my PDC to check whether the client login through the BDC. I found that my client (on Window NT) are able to authenticated by BDC, but it keeps

Samba 3 + Win2k = Headache
I have a feeling I may have lost focus on the issue in some of my previous messages... so here's my dilemma. I have several Windows (2000 and XP) clients, and several Linux (Red Hat Enterprise 3, 2.4.21 kernel) clients. I've got a couple servers, one is currently Windows 2000 Server, and one is Linux (same as above, with the snapshot Samba running). I want to be able to have users log

idmap backend problems
Hello, I am trying out Samba + Winbind + NSS + CIFS in a test environment, which currently consists of a PDC, a fileserver, and a client, all with samba 3.0.11 I got everything working more or less, but noticed that the uid's are different on the fileserver and on the client (resulting in erroneous file ownership on the cifs mount). This is also very obvious when doing a getent passwd. The

SWAT works with Webmin but not via localhost:901
I have tried everything that I know of. I have reviewed the services file and the swat file in xinetd.d a tun of times. It appears, via netstat that swat is listening on port 901. However when I attempt to access it via the Mozilla browser on my Fedora server (with 127.0.0.1:901 or localhost:901) nothing happens. It just sits there. However, if I access it via webmin (which has swat stored

posixAccount for Machines in LDAP?

I also have 3 slave/BDC's and 1 master/PDC Right now all of my users and groups exist entirely in the LDAP directory. I have a few accounts in addition to the normal system accounts that are used for emergency access. All authention and group enumeration uses

Windows UIDs
hi all. how does samba create its uids and gids from the windows domain? and what can i do to prevent it 'dropping' these mappings? i've set up windows 2003 sfu to allow samba to map to the uid stored in active directory (by using sfu nis), is this the safest way to ensure folder permissions remain constant or am i being unnecessarily scared? :-) thanks for any tips john

Matching Group ID Numbers With Names
I am having difficulties figuring out which group has permissions on directories that I have within a directory. For example, at the command line, I use "ls -l" (without the quotes, of course) to get the following display: drwxrwx--- 3 MIS+psch MIS+Carb 4096 Sep 2 11:10 MyFolder Drwxr-xr-x 3 MIS+dzoo MIS+Carb 4096 May 21 2003 ThatFolder As you can see, MIS+Carb is all I can see, but

Authenticateing DC's on an ldap backend... nobody knows how?
Doesn't anyone here know how to authenticate hosts in the group 'Domain Controllers' such that you don't have to set 'ldap admin dn' to the ldap server's root dn? What's the big deal? Why is this such a secret? Everytime I ask about it I get dead silence. It doesn't seem to matter what list I am on either. Jim C. --

Can't see my Samba server into the A.D. Domain
Samba server: SUN/Solaris 8 Samba version 3.0.10 Domain: Active Directory with a W2K PDC My Samba server is a Domain Member Server, connected to the Active Directory Domain with the "net rpc join" unix command. All the MS-Windows SMB client from the Domain can connect an use, without any problem, the shares of the Samba server. When I use, on an MS-Windows client or the PDC, the
