Samba authentication slow after upgrade to Samba 3
Hi, I have just upgraded a server from Samba 2 to Samba 3 and some of the Windows clients are taking a long time to authenticate shares (1 or 2 minutes). Eventually the username/password box appears and then when you enter a correct password, all is fine - it is just the initial authentication. This is a simple UNIX password Samba server (with NIS) and I have set it to not use encrypted

login and WinNT
Hello! I was wondering if it's possible to make Windows NT and Samba 3 work togheter. I found an old question with the same problem I have. Samba 3 is not authenticating WinNT machines. My smb.conf is: [global] workgroup = DESQ-TESTE server string = Teste (Samba %v) interfaces = 143.106.19.25/255.255.255.192, 127. bind interfaces only = Yes encrypt passwords = No password server =

security = ADS
Hi all, I've been fighting with joining my samba server (debian) to my active directory domain for 4 days now. The problem here is that users in my active directory domain on windows machines are not able to browse my samba shares without being prompted for authentication. I can: - Join the domain from samba server using net ads - View list of tickets when brownsing window shares with

Migration from Samba 2.2 to Samba 3.020b
Hello, we migrate from Samba 2.2 to Samba 3.020b. We have the problem now, that some clients can not connect to the Samba Server. In the log there are messages like that: [2006/02/23 08:49:20, 2] smbd/sesssetup.c:setup_new_vc_session(704) setup_new_vc_session: New VC == 0, if NT4.x compatible we would close all old resources. CryptoCard - PAM or RADIUS?
Greetings all, I'm working on attempting to get SAMBA to work with a product line called CryptoCard. I *should* be able to get it to work one of two ways, either through the use of CryptoCard's provided PAM module, or through RADIUS authentication. Currently, I cannot seem to get PAM authentication to work at all. This is what is in the 'samba' file for PAM: auth

user authentification error with new samba version
from samba 3.0.9 to 3.0.13 I can not access my shares from a NT4 box as usual before upgrading. I can access samba shares from linux via mount //server/testuser /mnt -o username=testuser, password=testpass as before. Even the newest version (3.0.14a) from samba.org doesnt't help. What has happened to samba ??? Any hints ?? Thanks for your thoughts, G?tz.

Authentication failing
I'm running version 2.0 beta. During the initial installation, I configured Samba to authenticate with an NT server. It worked as expected. Now, I want to reconfigure Samba with security = user. I've set encryption = no (and insured that the NT client is sending plain text passwords), and I've removed the references in the smb.conf file to PASSWORD SERVER =. As I expected, the NT

"conversion error" and NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE - more info
Hi again, as I am finally back working on the problem, I add the smb.conf in the hope somebody can see what I am doing wrong. Samba Version is 3.0.14a from Debian Sarge. Attached is my smb.conf - there may be some unnecessary things in it meanwhile due to too much trying, but anyways. Meanwhile there are some more clients that have problems with password authentication. One thing I noticed is

Samba 3 with Unix passwd authentication?
We are a primarily Linux company with a NIS backend, but we keep a couple "bridge boxes" for Windows users (on a Windows PDC) to connect to their unix accounts and access data. Under Samba 2.2, this was fairly easy with "encrypt passwords = no" turned on. But I can't figure out how to make it work with Samba 3. Does Samba 3 not support a unix passwd backend, or am I

Login Failure

Also there's no way I can authenticate using root when screen is locked. My nsswitch.conf looks like passwd files nis nisplus winbind Won't this first they local files then winbind? Regards, Norman

Preventing brute force password attacks
I was hoping to set up fail2ban to block IP addresses that generate too many Samba password failures, but it needs a syslog message with the IP address of the computer that failed password authentication. Unfortunately, Samba doesn't seem to do this in my environment. Here's a sample error message: smbd[312]: smb_pam_passcheck: PAM: smb_pam_auth failed - Rejecting User brutus ! I

help with samba and ldap on centos 5
Hi everyone; I'm having some trouble with samba on a centos 5 box; the box has been configured to authenticate against an ldap server via authconfig....authentication for normal use (console, ssh) works great....I'm having some trouble with samba using single ldap users or local users....It's rather weird, shares in which access restrictions are based upon ldap groups are working

WinXP client always connects as Gaia\Guest
All attempts to connect to our Samba server, share "\data" from any Windows client fails. I'm trying to get samba to prompt the windows user with a login box, have them enter the samba username/password, then head onto the share. If I use in the address field the following: \\gaia\data /user:woellki a dialog box appears, with the username field greyed out "Gaia\Guest"

winbind problems
Hello, I am running a Samba server (3.0.7) on a Suse 9.2 box. I have connected this server successfully to a Windows 2000 Active Directory (mixed mode). I have nsswitch.conf, krb5.conf configured and winbind seems to be running properly for the most part. With wbinfo I can get all of my user and group information. Problem is, it seems that at random times, the samba server just stops

Weird problem - one machine works another doesn't on new server - both OK on old one.
Hello and Thanks in Advance, I've been at this for three days now and can't think of anything else to try. Been through the docs and #samba on openprojects and even begged for direction in #samba-technical who suggested writing here. On the ancient RedHat 5.2 server (SAMBA 1.9?) both boxes work OK and continue to work OK with both servers now up (new one is from Mandrake 8.2 - SAMBA

Help with error log entry and terrible performance
When an XP box is reading a file from the Samba server performance is what you would expect with 100 mbs ethernet. When uploading a large file (>1 meg) performance is very slow. 1/20th what I would expect. The Samba server log has these entries: posix_fcntl_lock: WARNING: lock request at offset 12226560, length 61440 returned [2004/12/24 17:28:52, 0] locking/posix.c:posix_fcntl_lock(658)

Roaming Profiles:Samba PDC:WinXP:User must be local admin
I'm having a problem with Roaming profiles in Windows XP with Samba as PDC. I've googled and trolled the mailing lists and read the Samba documentation. Problem: User logs onto domain from WinXP client and profile is downloaded (you can tell because it takes a long time and lights on hub are lit up). However, unless that user is in the admin group locally, all/some of the profile
