Browse list issues with Windows XP
To further the discussion (or lack thereof) of the browse list issues (systems not showing up in the browse list, even though their shares are accessable with //system/sharename) that 5 or 10 people on the list have been having over the past month or so... I was out to this client the other day, had the opportunity to try the few things that had been suggested, all to no avail. I then proceeded

OS X Clients Can't Create Sub-Directories
I'm running samba on a local linux server, with a bunch of shares. Over the last several years, this has worked perfectly in our heterogenous network of OS X and Windows. All my windows clients still work perfectly - my users can mount the samba shares and create, rename, move etc files and folders. However, recently (starting yesterday) my OS X clients are unable to rename any sub

Win XP 'Network path was not found' Error when connecting to Samba share
I am running a network with 2 XP boxes and 1 RH8.0 box running Samba 2.2.8a (bin pkg). I have also tried Samba 2.2.5 (the included distro ver.) and Samba 3 (not in depth though). I have added my WinXP username/passwd to smbpasswd and to the Linux User list. I've tried encrypt passwords and have even tried playing with the 'gpedit.msc' in Win XP to turn off encryption to 3rd party

No My Network Places or Net Neighborbood Icons, & /tmp log entries
Hi, I am having the following problems with Samba: 1) My server system is not immediately visible to windows machines, i.e., there is no icon in "My Network Places" XP, or in "Network Neighborhood" in 98. I am able to manually log into the system via Windows XP by doing the run command for my server name. I am also able to log in via Mac OS X, but I must also specify a

Can't see clients in network neighborhood
Hi list, Small bug here succesfully setup a samba file server as a domain controller . Thing is I can't see the clients in network neighborhood - only the file server. This seems to also be causing problems for central admin programs, which is a real concern. Can any one shed light on this? Thanks, -- Ismail

Running R on a Local Area Network
A couple of months ago I downloaded R 1.6.0's binary for Windows, which I have since been using without any particular problem, that is on one machine running Windows 98. Last week I set up a local network and have since tried to use R remotely, i.e. R is installed on the previous machine and nowhere else. On the client's side, the GUI opens correctly and allows me to do simple

Question regard an IPC$ error with Windows 98 Clients.
To begin with, I am a Linux and Samba neophyte. I apologize for my ignorance in advance. If I have posted this to the incorrect list, I apologize again, but I am going bald with frustration over my issue. I am attempting to configure Samba version 2.2.2 on a Red Hat Linux 7.1 machine. I have set it it up in USER security mode, as I will be running it stand alone. Currently I am only

Windows XP slow access to network places shortcut?
All, In winxp & 2k for that matter, you have the ability of saving shortcuts to network places in the my network places. When some of my users try to access these shortcuts(to a samba share) in winxp, it takes a horrendous amount of time for the folders to populate the screen. Especially when viewing in windows explorer with the folders view button depressed. Under tools>folder

samba will disappear from the win2000's network places
Dear all: I've found one strange things. I am using Red Hat Linux 5.2 and Samba 2.0.6. (I rebuild the RPM in RH 5.2) The samba is treated as a Server. Every windows 95/98/NT could access the samba server without problem. In windows 2000 RC2 (treated as client), it could access the samba server. But if I enable the "IP Security Policies on Local Machine". (You can enable

Samba and Network Neighborhood
Hi All, I turned my Debian box into a file server on my home network. What happened is now no boxen except the localhost shows up in Network Neighborhood on the Windows boxen. All shares work fine and if I search for the Linux server, I find it. Has anyone ever run into this and resolved it? Three days of Googling have left me with the same problem and a headache. Thanks.

Servers disappear from Network neighborhood
I am using Samba-PDC-LDAP with samba-3.0.20b-1. On my file servers I am using samba-3.0.10-1.4. I'm not sure exactly what is happening but every couple of weeks the file servers disappear form network neighborhood. I checked browstat on my Windows system and it points to my PDC as the master browser and I checked the wins.dat file on my PDC and the systems were there. I did not check

Is it possible to map shares via Network Neighborhood?
We're running Samba 2.2.2 over an NT network. Our clients use Win95 (for the time being) and I wondered how we config Samba so they can map the shares using network neighborhood. We can map fine through MS-DOS, but when I try, for example, to map E drive to \\nfssrv\ads share via network neighborhood (where we ARE able to see the shares), it says E: is already connected to . Do you want

Can anyone tell what?s missing from my smb.conf files? The problem should be the same on all of the samba servers, how do I have to configure samba to show up in the network neighborhood? Thanx in advance. --

Windows can't see Samba server in Network Neigborhood
I have a private IP network with one win98 PC and one Linux PC. The windows machine can only access shares if I map a network drive and type the path in explicitly. When I go to network neighborhood the Linux PC does not show up. Both machines are in the same workgroup, so it should be there. When I type the path directly into the address bar in network neighborhood the program stops

First letter in filenames missing
I am new to Linux and Samba, but I have resently started experimenting by installing a Mandrake 9.0 on an old PC. I am trying to use this as a file server accessible from my Window 98 SE PC. So far I have managed to install Samba and the Linux PC is visible in the Windows Network Neighborhood, but files can not be accessed. I think this is a password issue, that I can solve by reading a bit and

Samba 2.0.7 Network Neighborhood problem
Does anyone know how I can fix the following problem? Server running Solaris 5.7 with samba 2.0.7, as a client, installed does not show up in the Network Neighborhood's workgroup. Server's IP address was changed, samba 2.0.7 was added and now it does not work. You can get to the server by typing it in by hand \\<server-name> or <server-ip> but it does not appear in the
