Samba record locking & PC db's
Fellow Samba-meisters,
I'm wondering if anyone can share real-world experience running PC
database apps (like M$ Access) with database files shared from a samba
server. How well has the record locking proven to work? I will be
setting up a small office network for a client w/ a Linux server running
samba as a file/print server and 4 or 5 Win95 clients running Office97
apps.

Samba 2.0 beta 4 on Linux (RedHat 5.2)
Fellow samba users,
I had some problems with trying to get samba running properly on
Linux (RedHat 5.2), but now I've got it working.
Two things I learned:
1) Use the packaging/RedHat/makerpms.sh script. It will generate a
RedHat compatible rpm for you. I had to make these changes to it
though:

Why is .journal file sometimes visible and sometimes not?
Hi.
I recently migrated two machines from ext2 to ext3. Kernels (nearly
identical) are 2.4.9-ac9 + preemptivity-patch + wrr-patch. The Installations
are based on Mandrake 7.2 + 8.0. Also I have e2fstools-1.23 newly compiled on
them. Both machines have two ext3 partitions (root + multimedia-data). On one
machine I see a .journal file on both partitions, on the other machine

[ANNOUNCE] Lguest64 - fatter puppies!
This is a formal announcement of Lguest64.
Most are aware of the little puppies (lguest32, or simply lguest, or in
some circles "rustyvisor"). But this time the puppies ate a bit too
much. No more lean and mean puppies, now we got big fat lazy ones.
Running on the hardware that's too lazy to do full virutalization. Yes,
lguest now runs on x86_64!
As you know, puppies are young,

1.4.0 spews garbage on CLI, crashes
Hi, I just installed asterisk 1.4.0 on my mac. I compiled from source
with no issues. I installed the sample config files, and basically
just added a register line to sip.conf (to register with a Free World
Dialup account).
Then I called my asterisk system from a different computer (using
x-lite softphone on windows xp, registered to an ekiga.net account).
Asterisk answers, and I can hear the

ext3-0.0.6a available
Hi,
ext3-0.0.6a has been uploaded to
ftp.uk.linux.org:/pub/linux/sct/fs/jfs/ext3-0.0.6a.tar.gz
and
ftp.*.kernel.org:/pub/linux/kernel/people/sct/ext3/ext3-0.0.6a.tar.gz
This version changes the way dirty buffers are marked to protect
against device drivers which might block in the ll_rw_block()
function. (Loop and lvm are examples.) It should also fix a rare but
persistent report of

IPTables 1.2.6a from source, additional relevant patches from patch-o-matic,
compiled directly into kernel, and not as modules....

Cannot login to PDC(FreeBSD boxen) from client(win XP)
I'm finally getting somewhere in setting up my FreeBSD PDC. I try and
login via my XP client and now it gives me this odd message. "Cannot
login because a duplicate user already exists on the network. Please
goto control panel and system and change your computer name." Sorta
paraphrased there, perhaps off by a word or two but that's pretty much
what it tells me. I'm just

EXT3-fs warning (device ide0(3,9))): ext3_free_inode: bit already clearned for inode 14
[ Tried to check the archives but the website seems to be down or
something ]
On one of our installations, I am seeing messages such as:
EXT3-fs warning (device ide0(3,9))): ext3_free_inode: bit already clearned for inode 14
Anybody know exactly what they mean?
These would be on a 0.0.6a system.

mounting an arbitrary directory?
Hi all,
Is it possible to specify an arbitrary unix directory to be mounted from
samba? For example, to mount /usr/local/bin ? Using a different smb
server, I've seen the ability to do this by doing something like
Connect to: \\smbserver\/usr/local/bin
Connect as: user
Password: ****
In other words, I'd like to be able to specify the exact path I'd like to
mount without having

testing duplication in model and functional
Hi,
I''m starting a new application, and want it to be tested out the wazoo.
Do people duplicate tests in both unit and functional tests? Say I
have a Product model. I write tests that make sure that it acts
appropriately (tests the validations and so forth). Is it good
practice to also write the functional tests for the same sort of tests
(i.e. make sure that the validations are

NT domains and 1.9.18pSomething
Hi,
I'm trying to replace an NT SBS box with a RH5.2 box, and
things are proceeding quite well, save a few samba troubles.
I've found that the NT4WS (SP4) clients can log in if told
to use a samba machine as a "workgroup", but that they can
not find a domain controller if told to use "domain" logons.
(They have the registry password encryption hack installed.)

Now what do I do? I’m really lost. I must be missing something.

I am running 1.9.18p8 on our production server and 2.0beta4 on a test

production server or test server. Granted, this is an old
