rsync-3.0.0pre10 and iconv
Hello, I am trying to get rsync-3.0.0pre10 --iconv option working between two linux hosts in local network. The client host is running Fedora Core 4 (kernel 2.6.17) and is using iso8859-1 character set. LANG=en_US The daemon host is running Centos 5 (kernel 2.6.18) and is using utf-8 character set. Charset disaster moving from 2.2.8 to 3.0.4
Hi all! I'm REALLY depressed! After moving from samba 2.2.8 to 3.0.4 I can not read my files. All names are corrupted. I used NO charset options in the original (2.2.8) smb.conf (which means that all names are in cp850, doesn't it ?) No I have installed 3.0.4, libiconv also. But can not figure out what to set in smb.conf. I use Solaris 8, LC_CTYPE=ru_RU.KOI8-R. And windows XP/2000

chinese characters
Hi, I am using SME server 6.0 which has samba preconfigured on it. We upgraded from MS Windows 2000 server. I am using the server in China and so many of the users wish to create files with Chinese characters in their names. File names with Chinese characters seem to cause all sorts of problems. They have trouble creating them, and files which are copied off backup (from the W2K system)

Samba fc3: accent problem
I am unable to properly view ISO8859-15 characters (typicaly characters with accent such as ?, ?, ?...) from filenames on a samba server using fedora core 3. After spending hours on it, I have been unable to find a solution. Any help from you would be greatly appreciated. Here is the description of my configuration: I have 3 machines running: - one server with fc3 - one PC "PC1" with

Moving fileserver
I'm having a problem here I'm not sure how to solve, so I hope someone else have done the same (and succeeded :) I have an old smb server ('tux') which is ancient (both in software and hardware) and can't handle the load. This machine is running version 2.2.3a-14.1 (Debian GNU/Linux woody) with 'character set = ISO8859-1'. The new smb server ('bella') runs

Convert from ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8?
The server I am running Dovecot on is still using locale = ISO-8859-1 but I am thinking it is time to convert to UTF-8... Can I just use convmv to convert all the files in the mailboxes to UTF-8 or is there anything else I need to do? Do I need to run iconv to convert the content also or does dovecot/MUA fix this by it self? (i.e. they display the mail as encoded in ISO-8859-1) Regards, BTJ

Rsync and filename codepages
Hi there, I am running rsync in server mode on linux (redhat 8) and I am running cygwin (latest version) on a mixture of win2k and winxp machines for Japanese users. When I Rsync from windows rsync complains about a no. of Japanese filenames (not all of them) and this is due, as far as I can work out, to incompatibilities/clashes between SJIS filename encoding (which Windows uses) and certain

Folks, Over the past few weeks the Samba-HOWTO-Collection and the Samba-Guide have been significantly updated. Over the next 48 hours I hope to complete this process. [sorta offtopic] Removing bad bytes from filenames
I'm moving my Ogg Vorbis collection off of my Linux server and onto my laptop. I plan on using iTunes to play my collection, but, that's a whole 'nother can of worms. I'm having trouble moving my complete collection over because dbPowerAmp (an application I used to love) made some dumb decisions about naming my files. For example, in track/album/artist names that contained a

Mac clients trouble with NFD accented characters on Samba share
File names on a Samba share with accented characters using the NFD form of UTF8 cannot be seen or used by Mac clients. While tying to find a solution, I came across this old thread : https://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2014-December/187545.html ("[Samba] Mount unix samba 4 share to osx client without mangled file names") A reply in that thread suggested: > >/Do I have

samba 3 accented names case mangling with win 98
Hi all, banging my head on the wall here... I think I'll never really understand codepages stuff. smbd is v 3.0.1, client is french win98 - yuk my smb.conf reads: unix charset = UTF-8 display charset = UTF-8 dos charset = CP850 when I create a folder/file with accents in it, I can create it ok, but reading proves impossible. If i create file ??????, it shows ok in the file explorer

Charset
I have upgraded on my debian server from samba 2.2.3 (stable ) to samba 3.0rc4 (unstable). The only problem that I have on my PDC is that italian character as ? (a') ? (u') etc. are non treated as they should and this can cause profiles non to load correctly. What should I do? THX Davide Parise E-Mail: d.parise@iskranet.it Cel.: +39 3333063640 FAX: +39 06233241981

upgrade samba-2.2.8 to samba-3.0.2a (umlauts)
Hi, we run a samba 2.2.8 server and like to migrate to a faster, new server running samba 3.0.2a. I thought to copy all files from the old to the new one mounting the new shares by nfs. For a test I copied some files using scp. A problem concernes the german umlauts: on the old server they aren't displayed if I "ls" the files while browsing the share works fine. If I copy the

Special Characters
Hi, I'd like to start implementing samba solutions, but I've heard that french special characters may lead to problems. Is this still a problem? I've heard that special characters like "?" in a file name cause the file to be 0 size and removeable only via the linux filesystem, not through a file share... Since I'm in Quebec, Canada, this is a concern for me...

client code page and valid chars
Problem: I recently recognized that my samba server was misconfigured for some years now. I never used the charset and "client code page" parameters in my smb.conf to map windows encoded filenames with german umlauts to the unix ones. For that reason I now have lots of filenames with windows encoded german umlauts on my samba-share. OK. Now I want to change this fact (softly). When I
