rsync-3.0.0pre10 and iconv
Hello,
I am trying to get rsync-3.0.0pre10 --iconv option working between two linux hosts in local network.
The client host is running Fedora Core 4 (kernel 2.6.17) and is using iso8859-1 character set. LANG=en_US
The daemon host is running Centos 5 (kernel 2.6.18) and is using utf-8 character set. LANG=en_US.UTF-8
Rsync is transferring files properly without --iconv switch:

Codepage conversion between 2.2.8 and 3.0.14 - what's 2.2.8 default charset on disk?
I have to upgrade a 2.2.8a (Debian) installation to 3.0.14a (Debian
too). I have quite everything clear but I am afraid I will get into
trouble with the filename encoding on disk.
The current samba installation has no explicit codepage declared for the
file system, and running "testparm" gives only these settings (which are
default) for codepages and charsets:

RE: Back to 3.0.1, Winbind and Solaris 9 (Mike Dorofe ev )
Hi Mike,
Thanks for replying! I have tried that but I still have the same problem.
I think that PAM is doing its job, I've set up logging so that everything in
pam.conf logs to /var/log/pamlog. In pamlog I see "user 'ganguly' granted
access".
There is something else that is stopping this working, I just can't see what
it is. Any ideas?

Convert from ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8?
The server I am running Dovecot on is still using locale = ISO-8859-1 but I am thinking it is time to convert to UTF-8...
Can I just use convmv to convert all the files in the mailboxes to UTF-8 or is there anything else I need to do?
Do I need to run iconv to convert the content also or does dovecot/MUA fix this by it self? (i.e. they display the mail as encoded in ISO-8859-1)

Rsync and filename codepages
Hi there,
I am running rsync in server mode on linux (redhat 8) and I am running
cygwin (latest version) on a mixture of win2k and winxp machines for
Japanese users.
When I Rsync from windows rsync complains about a no. of Japanese filenames
(not all of them) and this is due, as far as I can work out, to
incompatibilities/clashes between SJIS filename encoding (which Windows
uses) and certain

Charset
I have upgraded on my debian server from samba 2.2.3 (stable ) to samba
3.0rc4 (unstable).
The only problem that I have on my PDC is that italian character as ? (a') ?
(u') etc. are non treated as they should and this can cause profiles non to
load correctly.
What should I do?

Mac clients trouble with NFD accented characters on Samba share
File names on a Samba share with accented characters using the NFD form
of UTF8 cannot be seen or used by Mac clients.
While tying to find a solution, I came across this old thread :
https://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2014-December/187545.html
("[Samba] Mount unix samba 4 share to osx client without mangled file

A reply in that thread suggested:

Winbind and case sensitivity (revisited)
Hi
I've had a look through the archives and found this discussion on
winbind and case sensitivity:
http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2004-February/080321.html
The issue is that winbind will in some cases return a username
capitalized as per the NT database (ie when the user is looked up by
uid), and in other cases as per the way the user typed it (ie when the
user is looked up by

idmap uid range 10000-20000: pam_winbind does NOT work ?
Hi all!
Again, unexpected behaviour!
When I set in smb.conf
idmap uid = 10000-20000
idmap gid = 10000-20000
I CAN change and SEE domain users ang groups as I change the owner of a file on Unix:
chown domain+user ./test.txt
chgrp domain+group ./test.txt
ls -l /tmp
-rw-r--r-- 1 user group 0 Feb 4 20:25 test.txt <- I SEE DOMAIN USER AND GROUP
BUT I'm NOT able to telnet or ftp

upgrade samba-2.2.8 to samba-3.0.2a (umlauts)
Hi,
we run a samba 2.2.8 server and like to migrate to a faster, new server
running samba 3.0.2a.
I thought to copy all files from the old to the new one mounting the new
shares by nfs. For a test I copied some files using scp.
A problem concernes the german umlauts:
on the old server they aren't displayed if I "ls" the files while
browsing the share works fine. If I copy the

Trouble with charsets on samba4
Hello
I have much trouble with german umlauts.
I've installed samba4 as a DC in an existing Windows Domain. The first join I made with a blank smb4.conf
"samba-tool domain join DOMAIN DC -UAdministrator%Passwort --realm=DOMAIN.LOCAL --server=windows-dc.domain.local --use-ntvfs"
It works fine and everything is synced.
On the share we have directories and files with german umlauts.
