Just a quick suggestion for backup solution, please?? ?
Hi!
We use Tapeware to back up a combination of LINUX and MS servers across the
network to one of two media servers. One is Windows based and the other is
LINUX. Having a little problem with the old tape autoloader on the LINUX
box, but the backup/restore from the MS platform works very well.

Issues while compiling samba 3.0.2a
Dear List,
First forgive me for my RTFM question yesterday about groups not appearing
in the Windows
usermanager (Karel Kulhav?, thanks for your reply). I did read the SAMBA
HOWTO Collection
but in a more 'vertical' way. This net groupmap thing must have passed my
attention.
I installed a prebuild version of Samba for redhat 8.0. Redhat however does
not compile in

OK, I have RTFM. All the I could find.
I cannot seem to set permissions via WINXP Pro explorer. No matter what I do all I get is access denied - even if I own the file.
Samba log reveals:

Making Samba 3.2.3 and ACL work
Hello!
I'm running samba 3.2.3 on my Ubuntu 8.10 server installation.
I'm trying to use ACL in order to get extended user permission
administration, but cannot make it work.
My samba shares are on a ext3 partition, and i have enabled ACL in fstab.
setting and getting ACL permissions on my files directly works like a charm.
But when my users try to access files via samba they cannot

Cygwin build fails because headers no longer default to Solaris ACL
Unfortunately I don't know how to write AC macros to properly solve this problem but Cygwin does not (any longer) include cygwin/acl.h from sys/acls.h which is required for Solaris ACL data structures to work. So the CASE statement improperly short-circuits the logic.
I have confirmed that Rsync builds using POSIX ACLs but haven't tested said functionality.

ACL
Hi samba group,
I'm trying to get samba to act like Windows in the Security tab (to be able
to add, remove, and modify ACLs on certain files/folders). We are running
Centos 5.2 (2.6.18-92.1.22.el5) with XFS installed for the /share partition.
I currently have these versions of samba installed:
samba-3.0.28-1.el5_2.1
samba-common-3.0.28-1.el5_2.1
I am pretty sure the ACL is all

[3.0.2] Trouble using ACLs: wrong file permissions after write/cr eate
Hi everybody,
I have a problem with Samba 3.0.2 using POSIX ACLs for shares.
File written from an ACL group/user will get wrong permissions
and are unchangeable for other users.
First the important informations about the configuration and
the setup:
a) Base system: Debian 3.0.1 with all updates
b) Samba: Self compiled binary within /opt/samba-3.0.2

ACL set up yet Security Properties not sticking.
Hi,
On a windows client if I attempt to modify the permissions on a file which
resides on a linux server, when I hit "apply or ok" my changes are lost.
Doing it from the unix cli (using setfacl) works as expected and the
changes are not lost.
Yet on windows if I right click - properties - Security. select add, add
a user or group, hit Apply and the user/group I just added is

Fwd: Re: Problem in fetching usernames of a group
Thanks Sir,
just inquisitive, because in a similar PDC configured on NT, I can have
groupnames similar to usernames. Also because this is done through a script
from web I was getting problems... however now I know it shouldnt be done so
I will have to validate that, but a similar validation or some error string
displayed from the command itself would be usefull..

How to support idmap_rid on Fedora Core 3?- RESOLVED
Resolved: I was not able to compile then make install and have work so I
ended up using the FC3 packages and adding only the freshly compiled
idmap_rid module.
Thanks for the help.

Documentation Update
Folks,
In preparation for the release of Samba-3.0.8 I have updated the smb.conf man
page as well as the Samba-HOWTO-Collection to document the use of the new
idmap_rid facility.
As part of the documentation update I have attempted to expand our
documentation regarding the role that winbind plays in Samba configurations.
This is a first cut at a chapter inserted to become the new chapter 12

Where is the tdbsam password database file?
I'm curious to know where the tdbsam password database file is kept on
my Fedora 7 system. Using the unmodified smb.conf file that shipped
with Fedora 7, I've enabled users using smbpasswd, and successfully
accessed shares. I just can't figure out where the password database
is located:
[root@box ~]# service smb start
[root@box ~]# setsebool samba_enable_home_dirs on

Review Request: Samba-3 by Example Update
Folks,
Over the past few weeks the Samba-HOWTO-Collection and the Samba-Guide have
been significantly updated. Over the next 48 hours I hope to complete this
process.
Today I have added a new chapter to the Samba-3 by Example book (the
Samba-Guide). within 24 hours all mirror site should be hosting the current
update.
I would very much appreciate review of the new chapter 8 and the
