Upgrade Novell 4.11 to Samba 3.0.7 wisdom needed
Has anybody done such a thing as this? I'm looking to make this transition as smooth as possible. I have the new fileserver up and running, and I'm using rsync to keep the Novell data current on the Samba server. Any words of advice on transferring the users and groups and permissions over to the new server in the least painful way possible? I have some idea that Novell uses LDAP

write only permissions
Hi, We've just put in a Samba fileserver to replace our windows box for our School District and it seems to be working great. I have a question about defining some specific permissions though. We set up 'Drop boxes' for teachers that kids can drag files into, but they don't have read permission so they can't read each others submitted work. Here's what is looks like on

spoolss causing driver issues
Hi, I have a problem. I upgraded from samba 2.0.7 to 2.2.3 recently, and one of my 2 printers have driver issues. Whenever I print to SAVIN 2545, I get binary and hieroglyphics, so I assumed that it's driver-related. I can print to our HP8100 just fine. Some machines were still configured with: "\\server\savin", LAN Manager Printer These machines STILL print fine. However, if

KVM vs ESXi
Morning Everyone, I'm busy doing a rebuild of my home server and am tossing between VMware and KVM for this build. I already have experience with ESX, we use it at work, but I'm debating trying out KVM for a while. The server itself is a budget build using a Supermicro X8SAX board w/ i7-950 & 12GB RAM, LSI 3081 SAS RAID (1068e based), rolled into a NorcoTek 16 Bay SAS case. Not fancy

Problem Samba 3.0 with net groupmap access LDAP 2.1.23
Hello, I thought I had this all figured out but I don't. I have a RedHat 8 system using LDAP 2.1.23 as backend to Samba 3.0.0. I wasn't able to get machines to join the domain so I used the debug option in slapd -d 10 to see what Samba was sending the LDAP server. It looked like it was resolving my admin to the guest account. I went back to check groupmap list and got the following error
