Worked examples?
I've been experimenting with Samba a bit. I won't claim to know a whole lot
about it, because I don't, and I'm even somewhat of a newbie when it comes
to Linux/UNIX. But I've been working with the worked examples that the HOW
TO docs describe on the website, configuring my smb.conf file as is stated.
I'm running Samba 3.0.14a-2 on Fedora Core 4, and I'm running into a

play each person's voicemail
How do I set each extension to play it's own voicemail prompts? I have vm
working in that it plays the standard "person at extension 1234 is not
available....." and takes the message. I've recorded seperate .gsm files for
each user but can not figure out how to use them.

smbpasswd -a -m
I am trying to configure Samba 2.2x with Win2K.
I need that samba shares a directory in the Linux server and the users Windows access that without authentication.
I created the UNIX users (etc/passwd).

degraded performance under domain login load
Hi guys,
Not sure how to diagnose this problem however i have recently
upgraded one of my schools sites from gentoo to freebsd which moved
us from samba 3.0.14 to 3.0.21b and the first thing I noticed was
when the students came to login if they all logged in at once the
performance of login was crippled to a near standstill!
As a test i swapped in the gentoo box and forced the upgrade to

Any docs to convert samba server to Win2003 server?
Yeah I know. Not a good question to ask on a samba newsgroup.
Unfortunately for this client, the software they use requires a Windows
server. Since the box is less than a year old, they do not want to
purchase a second server for two applications. So, I am left with the
task of converting the linux/samba server to WinBloze 2003 Server. There
are only 10 workstations so if I have to unjoin

setting file permissions
I have a very upset client and I can not find an answer. How do I set
the read-only flag using the Windows Explorer? I right-click, select
properties, select the read-only check box, click apply and the check
mark goes away. No errors it just does not work. I browsed the log files
on the server and did not find anything there either.

What gui works with samba 3.x and tdbsam ???
I just setup a new server for a client and everything is running well. I
added and setup all the users from the cli just because that's how I'm
used to doing it. I tried using the samba gui that comes with CentOS
4.03 and I tried Webmin but nether one will add the user proberly to the
tdbsam database. They add the user fine to the /etc/passwd file but
samba does not get updated

High CPU utilization
Apparently nobody has a suggestion to why smbd process all of a sudden starts
sucking CPU like crazy? Restarted samba and then restarting the entire server
does not fix it. Searching the archives shows I'm not the only one with this
problem. The archives do not show what to do about it yet. Grr...

Dual X100P cards
I know the X100P cards are not supported by Digium any more, but for home office use, are they still acceptable? I have two POTS lines, one residential and one business line comming into the house. I'd like to get both into my * server and $15 total compared to > $100 for the newer TDMxxx card sure is desirable. Having said that, will the sound quality, functionality, stability, etc. be as

Server recommendation ??
I have a client that already has a "Windows 2003 Server" server in their
main office. He wants me to put a new server in a remote office, which
is connected via a vpn. The only real connection between the two will be
every night to copy all data files to the main server for backup. He has
told me to use Linux/Samba or Win2003k whichever I think is best. Now,
without a doubt, I

New to Samba, need help
I have compiled and install samba 3 from source. The services start and I
can smbclient localhost etc. just fine and I can get a list of the computers
in my active directory with that command. When I do a wbinfo -u I get "error
looking up domain users." My smb.conf file has security = ads, my realm is
NCCVT.K12.DE.US, I have encrypt passwords etc.
Any idea where to start looking?

When to use Winbind ??
Am I correct that you only need to run winbind if you have other servers
are involved? If all I have is a samba server acting as the PDC and that
is it, I do not need to run winbind, right?
The samba by example book shows using chkconfig to start smb, dhcpd,
etc., but does not mention winbind. Later on it shows doing a 'ps ax'
and it shows winbind running. Just wanted to confirm.

How to create seperate .rpm's for RedHat
How do I recreate the individual .rpm's that RedHat seems to like? I can
compile samba using the ../packages/RedHat/makerpms.sh script but that
only generates a single .rpm file. I have to "force" install it since I
can not remove the multiple RedHat generated .rpms since they are so
entwined with other dependancies. Each time a new version of samba is
released, I'd like to

Sweave - landscape figure
Dear R-users
I am trying to understand how Sweave works by running some simple examples. In the example I am working with there is a chunk where the R-commands related to plotting a figure are placed. When running R CMD Sweave ? , pdflatex the output is a portrait figure. I wonder whether it would be possible to change the orientation to landscape (not in the latex file but in Rnw file).

"ldap passwd sync" not working
Hi.
I've samba-3.0.11 now, installed from rpm on Redhat 9.0. Problem was
with 3.0.10 too. I don't exactly know when it was broken, because I
found it week ago.
I've samba as PDC with LDAP backend some time ago when user changes
password in windows or when password chenged with smbpasswd - LDAP
password of this user was changed too. Now LDAP passwords remains the
same as it was.

Grub, pata, and sata
I've just filed bug 0004634. Grub won't install onto my pata drive now
that I have a sata drive installed. This is grub 0.97 on CentOS5.5.
Has anyone else encountered this? I'm guessing that I can always
install Fedora on hda, which should give me a working grub, but I was
hoping for something a little less involved.
Thanks,
Dave Mackay
