Unix Extensions
I have a Samba 3 server, and a client with Samba 3. The server has a share for home directories, and the client is trying to mount it, but after it's mounted, I still can't create any symbolic links. Also, the GUI login (Red Hat Enterprise default) isn't working, but I think that's just a symptom of the symbolic and hard links not working. Any idea why, when I enable unix

Samba 3 + Win2k = Headache
I have a feeling I may have lost focus on the issue in some of my previous messages... so here's my dilemma. I have several Windows (2000 and XP) clients, and several Linux (Red Hat Enterprise 3, 2.4.21 kernel) clients. I've got a couple servers, one is currently Windows 2000 Server, and one is Linux (same as above, with the snapshot Samba running). I want to be able to have users log

Strange problem with icons on the desktop
Thanks everyone for helping me get the home directories working over SMB, especially Ben Ford for his workaround for the Xauth and GDM. Now I've got a problem that, most likely, nobody's ever noticed before... or is something specific to me. I've got a Linux client, and a Samba server, and a Windows 2000 server, both set up EXACTLY the same. I've got a test user and the home

Suse 9.1 Samba
I have been trying for two weeks to get onto a Win2k domain which has active directory with no success. The Suse YAST samba client will not do ADS, only domain, server, or user, so I went to the command line stuff I found the the Samba documentation. I can do kinit and get back the following: sha-linux:/etc/samba # kinit art_fore@3MTS.COM art_fore@3MTS.COM's Password: kinit: NOTICE:

.Xauthority & SMB
I asked this question a while ago, but never got any response. Since then, I've researched the problem some more, so I can give a much more concise description of what's happening. I'm mounting the home directories of the users upon login (using pam_mount) from the Windows server. However, none of the users can run X Windows. It says there's a problem with the .Xauthority file.

Winbind scalability issue
In other people's environments or test situations, what kind of scalability do you see with winbind? How many aggressive users can be supported? Using: Suse SLES 8 for ibm iSeries Samba authentication with winbind against win2k active directory. at the moment, a 100 FD network connection 3 windows DC's to authenticate against. validate root locally with winbind
I have set up winbind successfully, but every time I need to perform any task as root, winbind tries to login via the domain server, which gives an "incorrect password" error. Is there a way to set things up so that the root user is only checked against the local passwd/shadow files? -- Ramon Casha Malta Linux User Group (http://linux.org.mt)

last try: change NT password with samba tools?
Hello, last try: Is it possible to change the password on a NT PDC with a Samba tool? I want to bind to the PDC as administrator and set the password of a normal user to a new value - without knowing the old value. I've asked this already but, unfortunately, got no answer (http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2003-December/076170.html ,

sharing users home dirs for Win2003 and linux
I've setup a linux box with winbind as a member in Win2003 AD and everything works fine. I want to share the Win2003 users home dirs with the linux box, i.e. when a user logs into the linux box, after he's authenticated through winbind, he should have his home dir from the Windows box, how can I do that?? Obviously I have to use CIFS to mount the dirs, but how do I maintain file and dirs

LDAP Idmap
I'm having quite a bit of trouble getting an LDAP directory set up for the idmap backend for winbind. I've been working on it for quite a while, and haven't found any very helpful websites or anything. I've found quite a bit on how to set up a PDC using LDAP, which would be nice, but I already have the PDC... I just need LDAP to host UID's and GID's. The things I'd like

Printer accounting/quota ?
Hi all, I am about to install a Samba server at a local school, and i need some advice and/or experience from others who have worked on a installation of that type/size. My plan is to roll-out a Samba server (of course), with LDAP back-end, and a number of printer queue's via CUPS. There will be aprox. 1000 user accounts, mostly students. The school has asked for a solution that would

getent does not get remote users
I have a samba 3.0.2a -server running Linux, which I try to set up to authenticate users from a NT4 PDC using winbindd. Now, everything works to the point, where I try to list users with "getent passwd". Getent only gets the local unix-users and has no clue about the NT4 -users. Also, home directories for the NT4 -users are not created and no logs whatsoever are left behind by the

Migrating to new server
Hi folks. I asked this question a couple of weeks ago, but nobody posted any answers. I have mandrake 9.1 with Samba 2.2.8 running a domain with 500 users. It has worked flawlessly for a long time. However, it is time to set up a new server. I have a new server with Mandrake 10 OE and Samba 3.0.3 running. Please explain to this newbie and very satisfied samba user how to migrate all my

Windows 2003 Active Directory and Group Access
Hi together, we have a Windows 2003 Active Directory Server, working together with Samba Version 3.0.2a-Debian. It seems everything (Kerberos authentication and so on) works fine. All the authentication is done by the windows 2003 server. My problem is, that I can't connect to a share via a windows xp client, when the share has an option "valid user" which defines a group of the

Windows changes file ownership & ACL's - any solution ?
I thought I had read a response to this. Went something like this: Word (and lots of others such apps) do not actually deal with the original file. They create a temporary file which overwrites the original when you save the new document. The 'new' file of course inherits the new editor's ownership. Hope this helps you. Winbind Trusts on Multiple Domains
I've got an interesting problem that I'll try to detail here as best I can. My Setup: We've got a W2K domain with 2 W2K DC's and a Samba member server that hosts the shares, including home directories. We've got both Linux and Windows clients (2000 & XP). For reference, the samba server will be named "SAMBA" and the Windows PDC will be named "PDC".

idmap_ad compile problem
I saw a message on this mailing list about compiling the idmap_ad.c, back in October of last year... and I'm having the same problem... When I try to compile it, the message I get is: gcc -I/usr/include/linux -I/root/samba/samba-3.0.4/source/ubiqx -I/root/samba/samba-3.0.4/source/popt -I/root/samba/samba-3.0.4/source/smbwrapper -I/root/samba/samba-3.0.4/source

CIFS Mounting Problem
I'm having a problem when I try to mount a CIFS share on a Samba 3.0.5 server from a Samba 3.0.2 workstation. When I type: mount -t smbfs //ip-address/share /mnt/point -o username=username, domain=DOMAIN It mounts, and I get no errors whatsoever. I can do almost anything I want (except for symbolic links and hard links, which is why I want CIFS). When I type the exact same thing, but change
