NT4-Samba Migration Test Results
John,
We previously corresponded on our testing of Samba 3.0.0 RC4. Since
then,
we have downloaded the Samba 3.0.0 Release version for testing with some
interesting results.
The Setup
Major Networks: Solaris (NIS), Windows Native NT4 Domain
Our Test Plan
We are testing Samba 3.0 as a candidate for replacing the old NT4
Domain.
Being a complex production networking environment, we replicated

Profiles change when migrating from NT4 to Samba PDC
After migration of an NT4 domain to Samba we find that when users log in
they have a new profile. Since we cannot deal with this on all of the
computers with all of the users we have had to stop the migration.
I have searched through the archive and not been able to find any
answers to this issue, I did find a relevant article though and
apparently they didn't have an answer in 2002.

NT4 Migration Question
A client has an existing NT4 domain with several NT4 servers. Two of the
NT4 Servers function as a PDC and a BDC.
We are installing Samba-3 on SuSE 9.0 Pro as a PDC with an LDAP backend,
and decommissioning the NT4 PDC at the same time. So far, so good. We
can also rebuild the old PDC hardware as a Samba-3 on SuSE 9.0 Pro BDC.
Unfortunately however, the NT4 BDC cannot be removed from the network

NT4 SP3 PDC with MS Exchange 5.5 to Samba 3.x ldapbac ked PDC and MS Exchange 5.5 still
>>I have a client in a similar situation. NT4 PDC w/Exchange 5.5 and Samba

Outlook/Exchange workflow app which locks them in until it can be replaced.
Similar situation - though we've been able to replicate it fairly easily in
google apps.

migration of PDC tdbsam backend to BDC - failed to fetch domain database
Hello
According to NT4 Migration Using tdbsam Backend
http://samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/ntmigration.html#id2604610 I
would like to transfer PDC settings (users, groups sids) to BDC and later
make from BDC PDC machine.
I have Fedora Core 7 PDC(hostname serwer) and Centos 5.4 BDC (hostname
serwer2) both on tdbsam backends.
I have copied smb.conf, passwd,group,shadow,secrets.tdb files

migrating NT4 PDC net rpc vampire errors with capital letters
Hi,
I have searched for days on Google and can't find a clear answer to my
question. I have a NT4 PDC which I am migrating to Samba 3 (Version
3.4.2-47.fc12) on FC12 with kernel(2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686). I am using
tdbsam as my passdb backend.
I setup Samba as a BDC and then joined to NT4 Domain succesfully. When I go
to vampire the accounts I get lots of errors and some user accounts get

New PDC
Hi -
I'm setting up a new Samba PDC here in a 30-person architectural office.
The current PDC is running on an older computer and hasn't been
updated in a while.
The new PDC will be Samba 3.4.0 running on Ubuntu 9.10. We don't use
roaming profiles.
My question is this - is there a way to "seamlessly" migrate the
desktops to the new PDC from the old one without

Can't login to Samba PDC
We're trying to migrate from a windows NT domain to a Samba domain. I've
installed Samba 3.0.2a with an LDAP backend. The server seems to be running
fine as I can browse the shares from a non-domain Win2k workstation after a
successful password check. The workstations join the domain just fine but
after I join them to the domain I can't log in to them. I've checked my

Fw: Users being deleted from Domain Users group on Samba BDC during vampire process of migration
There is a line in my message that was incorrect. It should state the
following:
The users with "(primary)" attached to their name are being deleted. As
you can see, the Domain Admins group no longer includes joeblow, snoopy or
vbe.
My Enviornment:
NT 4.0 PDC
Debian (Sarge)
Samba 3.0.7-2
Openldap 2.1.30-3

Can not add a new NT Workstation to a new (vampired) samba domain
I am replacing an old NT4.0 Server with a debian 4.0R1 etch Linux server
(samba 3.0.24).
This was with a completely fresh install of debian.
My smb.conf is pretty simple:
[global]
workgroup = BUTLER
netbios name = STAR3
passdb backend = tdbsam
domain master = No
domain logons = Yes
os level = 33
add user script = /usr/sbin/useradd -m '%u'

Problems in SAMBA 3.3 to 4.0 migration
I am migrating an old but functional Samba 3.3.4 smbpasswd-based PDC to a new
Samba 4.0-based VM. I planned to build the 4.0 as a BDC and then simply
dcpromo it to my PDC, and then retire the old server. But I've come across
two problems for which I'm needing some guidance.
I've built the 4.0 box, extracted the original domain SID, and joined the
machine to the domain. I can log into

Several samba / ldap for a pdc/bdc setup/transition questions
Greetings all,
I've been researching migrating my NT4 PDC and BDC services to samba
to get around the concerns we have here with NT4 no longer being
patched when security holes are found.
Details of my current NT4 domain...
approx 300 computers, most of which can be migrated out soon either
to be in no-domain or in an active directory domain
approx 3000 user accounts, which need to be

Machine accounts, Samba 3, NT Domain migration
Greetings everyone
I finally succeeded in doing the seemingly most difficult thing, "following directions." I got my act together configuring the smb.conf and migrating using net rpc vampire into tdbsam. There are issues with this migration in which computer netbios names which are obviously all uppercase were not being created in /etc/passwd. I put my C cap on and converted the computer

Migrating NT4 Domain with Idealx tools
Hi all
For several days I've been doing tests for our upcoming migration from
an NT domain to Samba PDC with ldapsam. We have ~200 clients, mostly NT4
and some Win2k. We want all of our users eventually switch from Windows
to KDE on Linux with thin clients through NX :-)
I managed to net rpc vampire all user and machine accounts into LDAP,
but then I realized some problems:

PDC & file server on same machine?
How much of a resource hog is a PDC? My understanding is that authentication
is done vs a BDC if available. I configured my new file server as the domain
PDC because I figured it would already have to run samba. I have two other
machines configured as BDCs to serve as logon servers.
I'm looking for opinions on whether I'm asking for performance problems by
making my file server the

With a Samba 3 PDC, can I promote a Samba BDC to become new PDC?
I'm helping out a small office upgrade their NT 4 PDC to Samba. It's a small
office of 6 people, so tdbsam is being used. They keep having tape backup
issues
and other problems, so one of the reasons for the Samba migration is to allow
me
to SSH into their box and remotely administer it from home on
evenings/weekends.
Currently I'm testing the move using two dummy machines, and
