Resolving computername from ip
Hi,
Is there, on a intranet, any way to resolve the computername from its ip
? I have a setup where I know which users are on which ip, and I
wan't to notify some events to some users with a "smbclient -M". But
since I don't know the computername, I don't know any way to send the
popups...
thanks

ldap, quickie...
Hi,
I'm a bit confused over the whole "dn" concept .... various
documentation states that I should create new samba-entries with
dn: uid=user,ou=<user-org>,dc=<domain>
and other states that i should do it with
dn: cn=user,ou=<user-org>,dc=<domain>
Right now i have a few entries, created both ways... and since i'm not
quite home in ldap, I haven't

calculating uidnumber
Hi,
I'm building my system on a LDAP backend, but I wan't to have full
control over the user creation-process. I have developed a backend in
php, to handle most of my needs. Except for calculating the uidnumber,
from where i calculate sambaSID...
My question is, can I call a function somewhere that returns the next
uidnumber/gidnumber? or do I have to look at idmap?
Thanks

wanting to pkg_add KDE/Gnome post-install
After installing a text-based development environment via /stand/sysinstall
(followed by CVSup, makeworld/kernel etc to 4-8-stable), I realize I want to
install KDE, too.
I initiated this with:
pkg_add -r kdebase
followed again by CVSup etc.
Apparently that wasn't enough. Am getting message "XFree86 setup utility.. not
installed" when trying to config xf86config (text-based) via

Inline editing of datetime and dropdown select objects?
I don''t believe that Rails has support for the inline editing of
datetime objects or dropdown combo boxes.
Does anyone have a helper function or two that would allow me to do such
a thing?

missing gcc-42-5666.3-darwin11.pkg
Hi there,
I just wanted to install gfortran via homebrew on mac os x mountain
lion. It uses the package gcc-42-5666.3-darwin11.pkg for installation.
Unfortunately I recognized that this package is not available anymore.
But the google cache told me that it was available at
http://r.research.att.com/tools/gcc-42-5666.3-darwin11.pkg some time
ago (the site was cached at Sep 30th).

Problems with predict.lm: incorrect SE estimate (PR#7772)
Full_Name: Marek Ancukiewicz
Version: 2.01
OS: Linux
Submission from: (NULL) (132.183.12.87)
It seems that the the standard error of prediction of the linear regression,
caclulated with predict.lm is incorrect. Consider the following example where
the standard error is first calculated with predict.lm, then using delta
method. and finally, using the formula rms*sqrt(1+1/n+(xp-x0)^2/Sxx).

rsync --delete problems
For some time I have been using rsync to backup data between different
machines and my NAS drive.
But within the last 2 days I have found out that rsync is not removing old
files from destination - directories renamed or removed from source.
In this example I want to sync files on my Debian Linux server to a NAS
drive. NAS drive is mounted using smbmount.
Using "-avhzn" dry-run it

Problem with serial output
Hello,
I''ve got a problem to get a serial output on grub, xen, linux-xen0 and
getty. The serial works fine with grub, xen and linux-xen0, but I''m
unable to start a console, where I''m able to login. I dont''t get any
output. If I change only the getty from ttyS0 to ttyS1 than I''m able to
login..
At the attachment you can see what I see through a serial,

First letter in filenames missing
I am new to Linux and Samba, but I have resently started experimenting by installing a Mandrake 9.0 on an old PC. I am trying to use this as a file server accessible from my Window 98 SE PC.
So far I have managed to install Samba and the Linux PC is visible in the Windows Network Neighborhood, but files can not be accessed. I think this is a password issue, that I can solve by reading a bit and

generate scaffold ignores controller parameter
Since I upgraded from Rails 0.13.1 to 0.14.1 "generate scaffold <Model>
