Smbpasswd + password sync on OS X
Samba 2.2.3a on OS-X 10.2.6 Trying to get a standalone server up and running with user level security. All the users have valid accounts and passwords, but we've enabled password sync and password chat and chat debug for the accounts as we don't do authentication against the active directory. unix password sync = yes passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u passwd chat debug = yes passwd chat

X flag in smbpasswd?
mksmbpasswd.sh does not create accounts with the X flag in the password flags field. Does this X matter, and if so, what does it mean? Samba vs Windows SAK
Has anyone seen this: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/Embedded/sak/evaluation/compare/advantage.asp And has anyone from the Samba team posted a response? It seems like some of the information presented there is contrary to what I know about Samba. ERX

Hello Family, I had encounted that as "user" I couldn't change my own passwd with "smbpasswd" and noticed the permission differences between smbpasswd and passwd. Is smbpasswd against windows 2003 server working?
Hi guys, me again. Please, I would like to know if this is a bug/ incompatibility with windows 2003 server. I would like that someone that has accounts stored on windows 2003 server make a test and try to change a password of one of those users from a linux box using smbpasswd -r <w2k3_host> -U username. For me it always complains about invalid username or password. This work if I change a

Unix password sync
Hi all, Sorry if this has been answered before, but I've searched Google and the archives and it hasn't revealed an answer to my problem. Basically I'm trying to get unix password sync to work so that users can change both their logon and other services (POP3 etc) passwords from within Windows. but the problem is that if I enable unix password sync, it fails with the error of:

samba/ldap - smbpasswd/userdelete
Hi... I'm running samba and ldap (openldap). Using smbpasswd -a username adds the samba ldap info into the users ldap entry just fine. The problem is deletion. Running smbpasswd -x username deletes the ENTIRE user's ldap entry. This is good if I want to delete the unix and windows account information, but not if I want to just delete the windows info. I assume it is because

update encypted and LDAP
Hello all, I'm currently trying out samba-3.0alpha24 and moving to samba-3.0.0beta1 since we're getting into XP and encrypted passwords etc. I was hoping to set everyone (about 13,000 users) up on an LDAP (openLDAP) server with just the Unix crypt passwords for now and run with encrypt passwords = no update encrypted = yes for a while to populate the NT/LM password hashes before

Fix for smbpasswd Samba 2.2.4 on Solaris only taking 8 character passwords
Under Samba 2.2.4 (and possibly earlier), smbpasswd (when run locally) only really reads the first 8 characters, as opposed to the full password. Obviously, this can cause mass confusion. :) The fix is pretty simple (I would offer a diff, but this is the kind of thing the configure script should check for...) - under Solaris getpass() will only return 8 characters - you must use getpassphrase()

Samba/smbpasswd/LDAP question
I have my smb.conf configured - I believe - properly to talk to my LDAP server: ldap admin dn = "cn=admin,dc=MYDOMAIN,dc=com" ldap server = ldap.MYDOMAIN.com ldap port = 389 ldap ssl = off But if I try to set a password using smbpasswd, it seems to think it wants to connect to localhost (and fails): # smbpasswd -D 99 -a dballing New SMB password: Retype new SMB password: Trying to

nobody & smbpasswd
Dear all, I find that for smbpasswd to work it is necessary to include "nobody" (or the guest account) in the "valid users" list under section [Global]. This requirement is not mentioned in documentations (or I've overlooked). Is this absolutely necessary ? R.Ho

DUX UX in smbpasswd??
hallo list, samba 2.x + SuSE 7.3 working as PDC in NT/W2K-Network: in the smbpasswd the account flags are set to U, DU, W. But a few accounts have an added X like UX or DUX. The man page describes only flags D, U, W and N. what does the X mean or can it be deleted. Anybody else with this appearance, Marco Lechner

Adding users by ignoring unix password file
Hi, Is it possible to add users/change passwords for users in samba without it being dependant on anything in the UNIX password file? For example I want to add a user to my samba password file without them existing in the UNIX password file. If anyone has any RTFM info they can kick me in it would be most appreciated :) Thanks -- Jamie Heckford Network Manager Trident Microsystems Ltd Tel:

Unix to SMB password synchronisation
I have set up a web page describing my Unix to SMB password synchronisiation which also has the source code to the C front end and expect script used. http://www.btinternet.com/~p.polkinghorne/samba/u2s/ Note this is a Solaris specific solution - but should be adaptable to other Unices. Hope this helps someone ... -- Peter Polkinghorne, IT Manager Kingsford Stacey Blackwell

Is Samba ready for it?
Hi, I am migrating from WinNT 4 to Samba 3 beta3 in a production environment. It would be nice to have some advice, because I don't know if Samba is ready for assuming this ;-) I never heard about any one that had something like this. This is kind of a big network so it will be 1 PDC (Samba) , 4 BDC's (Samba) and 2 File Servers (w2k). I will have a minimum of 800 machines and 2000 users
