OT: hardware question
Hi, folks,
I'm installing a RAID controller card for a large external RAID box in
a Dell server. I've got two riser slots available. Here's the question:
the controller card has some large chips on one side, and if I put it
in riser 1, those chips face downwards in the box, blocking ease of
cooling, while if I put it in riser 2, the chips will face up... but be
right over a large

win 2k3 / XP Pro to Samba 3.0.1 open failed, result=-512
I'm having some confusing problems transferring approximately 16GB, in
about 541,000 individual files.
What is happening is that I am starting with a blank destination
directory on a gentoo system running samba 3.0.1, and pulling from one
of two windows systems. The problems come in that each time I use rsync
(version 2.5.7) over samba to keep the data on the gentoo system's side
in sync

Digium X100P vs Dodgy Ebay X100P
Hi
I thought this might be of general interest.
Recently I purchased an X100P from a Digium reseller in the UK. Very
pleased with the card; works perfectly. My friend (known for his deep
pockets and short arms) purchased an X100P card from Ebay. He's had no end
of problems with line noise, dropped called etc so I thought I would compare
the two cards. Plus mine was delivered within two

OT: hardware suggestions for video capture card for a server
We've got several secure rooms, with video surveillance 24x7. A few years
ago, we got a couple of cards based on BT878 chips, which we use with the
motion package. I've posted here about hardware issues...
After a fair bit of testing, the cards just don't seem to be compatible
with Dell rackmount server firmware. They work fine... on older Penguins,
which are Supermicro. It's

OT: Free DID/SIP accounts
OT => Old Topic.
Any suggestions for free DID/SIP accounts?
The local Linux User Group would like to see how to set up an Asterisk
system. And in case I can't find or remember who I loaded my TDM400
card to (and because it makes sense) I'd like do a (SIP) connection to a
DID provider. Heck not even sure I can get to an Analog line where we meet.
I searched voip-info.org and used

[CAVPdiscussion] OT: RFC: Canadian Association o f Voice over IP Users (CAVU)
In the latest CAVP conference call, the membership body voted to restrict
membership to VoIP LEC's and to create a seperate membership body for any
other parties interested in contributing to the CAVP's efforts in CRTC
lobbying and providing a unified industry presence in the Canadian telco
industry with a view to VoIP services. Accordingly, I would like to propose

OT: (a) Biostar or MSI mainboard? (b) all Celeron CPU's OK?
(a) Mark (mhr) suggested I buy a bare bones box, when I reported the
problem with the mainboard in this Dell Dimension 2400 box. Possibly I
can have the mainboard repaired (and the PSU, if it is also having
problems), and if so, I will give this one to my Stepson and go the
bare bones box route and have a more powerful box for myself. I looked
at two (2) very low end Desktop mainboards in the

[OT] Batch Job Scheduler/Manager
Hi. Looking for suggestions/ideas.
I have pretty loose requirements at this point, but I am looking for a
tool (or set of tools) where I can automate and control a large group
of tasks by a basic web front end.
I have a series of scripts that do various conversions of data or
media, as well as analysis and I want to be able check their status,
see if they completed or if they failed. Then

OT: Need PCI only Video Card recommendation for use with WINE
The MB I've been using has a built in crippled ATI chip, since the
manufacturer didn't see any need to support OpenGL. Yup, thats right,
NO OpenGL support at all. Which means other than basic menus wine is
pretty well stuck not working.
The MB came with 2 PCIe X4 slots, 2 PCIe X8 slots, and 2 PCI-X/133
slots. You will note, there are NO PCIe X16 video slots. I've tried a

OT: SUSE 9.3 and NICs
Folks, I realize this is off topic, and if anyone can suggest a
better source for the question, I'd be glad to go there. Novell
SUSE's support is unresponsive, however.
My problem is this: I'm running 9.3 Pro on an Intel server board that
has two NIC chips built in (a 10/100 and a GigE). I've since added a
Netgear GigE NIC. However, every time I reboot, the NICs assigned to

[OT] Best way to get dhcpd messages piped to a web service.
Starting off, it is important not to loose any dhcp messages, especially during
log rotation.
My first thought on this would be to add a fifo to syslog.conf and slup from it,
like:
# perl -ne 'm/.../ && WWW::Curl ...' < /var/log/messages.fifo
Does anyone see a more proper way?
tail -F / -f could both miss messages during log rotation (please correct me if
I am wrong)
