ext3 blocks other with large writes
Hi there, First of all thanks for all the ext3 development! I run it on my laptop and it has saved me many times from lengthy fscks :-) However, I have observed that whenever something is doing a lot of writing to an ext3 filesystem other processes that involves I/O on the same disk are blocked for long times (often in the 10-30 secs range). For example, if I cp a 1.5 Gb file from one ext3

RE:How to decide mode and journal size?
Hi. I am using a large storage which is ext2 file system of 1T byte. It has many file types, doc, mail data, zip, etc. It doesn't have a database file. I want to change the file system from ext2 to ext3. It also can't divide to any partitions. How to decide journal mode and journal size? Please advice to me. Recommend a journal mode. interfacing with Fortran 90/95
Hi again, Is there any documenation on interfacing R with Fortran 90/95? Or a small example...? I'm mostly interested in passing matrices as dummy arrays in Fortran 95. For example, I would like to be able to call from R a routine having a declaration such as subroutine F(x,....) double, dimension(:,:), intent(inout) :: x ..... end subroutine F Does somebody have any experience in

querying the ext3 journal
I'm not sure if this question makes sense, but here goes. We have the need to periodically check for newly created/modified files in a rather elaborate and well populated directory structure. I don't believe that simply walking the directory and checking stat's is the answer, given that I need a process that will impose minimal performance degredation on the system. Would it be

ext3 waking hard disk
hi :) when using ext3, i can't get my hard disks to go to standby mode any more. i am using timeouts set by hdparm with 2.4.18 kernels. even when i issue a standby command manually, the disk spins up again after a few seconds. however, (to my knowledge) no user space program accessed this disk at that time. i suspect ext3's journal to be causing the disk accesses. is that possible?

Driver for Symbios 8100S PCI SCSI?
I'm trying to install CentOS 3 on an OmniBook 800. (Am I insane?) The bootdisk.img gets things started just fine, but the closest driver on the drvblock.img disk is for the Symbios 53C896, and the Omnibook has a 53C810. Manually choosing the Symbios driver seems to discover scd0, but it's not able to load CentOS from the CD. (I've tried both the boot.iso from the os/i386/images

Best CentOS to install on *old* laptop?
I've found an old IBM OmniBook 800 and am curious whether I can get it going again. (Currently it boots either Windows 95 or some then-contemporary version of Slackware.) The CDROM is external (SCSI, I think) and the machine won't boot from it, so it'd require a boot floppy. Any suggestions? Or is CentOS entirely the wrong Linux to be thinking about for this?

Battery status indicator in CentOS 4.4
I've got CentOS 4.4 installed on 3 machines - two laptops and a PC. Only one, a HP Omnibook 900, shows the graphical battery status indicator (in the bottom right of the screen), but the other laptop (a new Dell Inspiron 1501) doesn't show it. Furthermore, the command /usr/bin/apm gets the response 'no apm support in kernel' - I've tried yum-updating the kernel and installing

Lotus NOtes & Replication
I have two PCs I use Linux on that I need to be able to run Lotus Notes on. Wine works exceptionaly well on one of these PCs, my HP OmniBook 500. Everything works including replication. My other PC is a desktop unit running the same os (RH 7.1) and the same version of wine (Winex from cvs (20011004)). Notes works on this machine except that I am unable to get replication to work. When I try

CentOS-5.7 + megaraid + SELinux : update problem
Hello, After updating to CentOS-5.7, I have a (small) problem : The context of /dev/megadev0 is now defined (in /etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/files/file_contexts) as system_u:object_r:removable_device_t:s0. This cause smartmontools to fail : avc: denied { read write } for pid=2847 comm="smartd" name="megadev0" dev=tmpfs ino=8284

Running Delphi application.
Hi, Some years ago I developed a Delphi application for my private use and now I want it to run on Linux using wine. The application uses Paradox database engine. I tried to install the engine itself but failed. Eventually I installed the whole Delphi development environment with wine. It certainly installed BDE but I can not run even the dbd32.exe (database desktop). Machine: RH9 HW: HP

Problems with groups containing other groups in AD in winbind
Hi there, I have winbind running on Linux machines to do all user authentication and group info. It is working mostly fine but groups in AD that have other AD groups as members are not expanded. For instance in AD I define group A to contain users X and Y. Then I add group B of which A is a member (but X and Y are not directly members of B). If I do 'getent group A' on the Linux

I'm getting some odd queries from a WinXPSP3 client to an older samba (3.2.0-24) Domain & File server running on linux kernel (2.6.27.19). The client seems to be querying for a netbios name <literal-question mark> followed by binary 0 (<00>) to the DomainServer, or Broadcasting the query with the '?' followed by a space <20>.
