security questions
I'm new to Samba and bringing 3.0.10 up. The current
question is how to nail down security to give the
department free access to our resources and keep
everyone else out.
The network has UNIX, Linux, and Windows compute
servers, some specialized file servers, clients
mostly running Windows and/or Linux, a few Sun
workstations, and several printers. The users
belong to two or three different

samba-kerboros-winbind
I would like to be able to use Windows Active Directory accounts for logon to a
Linux RH8 desktop. I have successfully used Kerberos to add the desktop to the
AD domain. I am also able to use Kerberos or rpc to view users & groups. I
have not been able to use winbind. I am using the Samba3.aplha22 RPM. Our AD
domain has restrict anonymous set to 1 for the DC's. Following the How-To

wbinfo -u works fine
wbinfo -t works fine
getent passwd/group works too

I installed Samba right now i'm using ver 3.07 but 3.04 did the same

This is what I basically do...
- Install samba
- Install winbind
- Turn both on at boot
- configure my smb.conf file and test :
wbinfo -g
wbinfo -u
getent passwd

Problem with wbinfo
Hello,
I'm using a Samba client to access a Samba Server. The "smbclient
tool" is ok, both at the client as at the server. I'm having trouble
with the "wbinfo" command (winbind service) at the client, as you can
see below.
Can anybody help me?
Thanks!!!

Samba and Sun NIS
I am trying to get Samba working under Solaris 8 with NIS (not plus) on this. My NT machine and the Sun machine pass all of the diagnostics and I can see the exported drives but can't login. Everything seems fine and I have Samba working on my AIX machines. I compiled with NIS+ support even though I am using NIS and it did not work so then I compiled without support and same error. I am using

Samba 2.2.7 and NIS
Is there a way to get Samba to validate users against the NIS (not NIS+) database. I've tried compiling with --with-nis but when I
try to access a share I get this message in the samba log:

It appears that it is still using NIS+ functions. System is

I've searched the mailing list archives and google and seen quite a bit of
this with no solutions. Was hoping to reach out here and find someone who
has this working.

2. Samba 3.0.28
3. ADS enabled, trying to integrate with a Win2k AD setup
wbinfo works great. I can pull all the groups/users just fine. I've read

Samba and NIS+ (lengthy desperate plea)
Hi everyone,
Let me briefly describe my setup. I work at a small university and we are
setting up 3 labs. 2 are filled with Ultra Sparc 5's, and the 3rd will be
filled with PCs running NT4 workstation. We have an Enterprise Server
3500 running NIS+ to authenticate the Unix labs (or rather we will, once
I get it working), and I'd like to set up Samba to authenticate the NT
labs using
