LPR or LPRng or CUPS
I'm converting my NT 4.0 Print Servers to Samba Print Servers. Which
printing system should I be using? LPR, LPRng or CUPS. I would love to have
some feedback on the advantages and disadvantages or what the Samba Team
recommends as a standard for working wih Samba.
In case you need it, my system is SuSE 7 kernel 2.2.16 running under VM on
s/390.

samba 2.27 as print server
I'm running Samba 2.27 on RH8 system. I've got samba as the print
spooler for Windows XP clients and using winbind as the user validation
against my Win2K DC. Permissions on the spool directory are root root
with the sticky bit on. Clients can delete their own jobs from the que,
but the spool directory is not being expunged of print jobs and the last
job constantly displays in the client

samba3 and cups printserver
Hello,
I've got an rh9 box which i am using for printing. I've got cups
configured and my printer is working fine. Originally, i intended to use
samba 2.2.x for printing, but then i saw that 3.0 was out so i installed
it's rpm instead. My first of many questions, for printing to work
correctly, samba and cups, what must be specified in terms of the
printing line in smb.conf, bsd or

lprng printing fails to connect to cups
Hi. I have a debian wheezy with samba 3.6.6-6. Before
updating to wheezy I had samba configured with LPRNG
printing.
Now I can't use the printers, it looks like samba is
trying to connect to cups even it is configured with
another printing system.
This is the error spotted when I try to install the
printer in a Windows 7 PC. Windows XP works fine.

Printer settings reset problems
Hi,
I am working on a print server project where we have ran into a big
showstopper. The print server works in a very mixed environment with
clients running for example Linux, Windows NT4, Windows 2000, VMS,
different Solaris versions and other Unix dialects. The server runs CUPS
for printer spooling and Samba to serve the Windows machines. It's the
Windows machines that has caused most

What am I missing here?!
OK, I've tried changing my printcap name from printcap to cups. Printing
works fine locally using CUPS on the Samba box. What am I missing here? Why
can't I print to the Samba box via the Windows and linux clients? Shared
directories work fine. I am really frustrated here and have exhausted Google
and all other resources I have. Here's my smb.conf for what it's worth.

cups printing
I have searched around the samba documentation, including the smb.conf man
page, and have found nothing regarding the cups printing system except
change printcap to cups. Now, I have done that, but printing still does
not work. I need some types of details and a sample smb.conf and/or any
other relevant documentation.
Thanks much,

paid-for-print
Hi there,
I'm newbie in Samba, so I beg for your excuse if my questions are
stupid.
Is it possible to use Samba as a "paid-for-print" server?
If U know something about another free "paid-for-print" software, please
let me know.
10x in advance,

Mdk 9.1, samba-LDAP 2.2.8a/3.0b3 (LDAP) can't print to z53
I've not been able to get Samba to print to a Lexmark Z53.
If I call it a Z52, the driver uploads (to where, I have no idea so I
can't check it) but I still can't get anything out of the printer.

LPRng
I have a redhat 9 server I would like to migrate (install Centos on a
new machine, and move the necessary files) to Centos 5.
On the RH9 machine, I use LPRng for printing. This was mainly choosen
because it makes it easy to control access to the printers using
/etc/lpd.perms, something I never figured out how to do in cups.
All printer queues are raw printers, the printer driver in Windows

printing = lprng working?
Hi
I updated samba today to 3.0.5. Printing stopped working. The log says:
[2004/08/02 14:28:57, 0] printing/print_cups.c:cups_printer_fn(108)
Unable to connect to CUPS server localhost - Verbindungsaufbau abgelehnt
I'm using lprng not cups. Is samba ignoring printing = lprng?
I tested lpr it still works as usual.
Is there anything else I should check?
Thanks.

Printing with CUPS and PDF
Trying to get one Samba server to serve several printers through CUPS
and host a virtual PDF "printer" at the same time. I've gotten them
working separately, but not together, and I think I know why.
In the smb.conf man page under "print command":
"With printing = cups, and if SAMBA is compiled against libcups, any
manually set print command will be ignored."

SAMBA 2.2.3a <-> LPRng 3.8.x
hi you all,
I had this problem for a long time and with different versions of SAMBA
and LPRng:
using '/usr/spool/lp/bin/lpr -r -Fl -m%m -J"%J" -U%U -P%p %s'
as 'print command' results in two jobs in the queue window on the NT box,
though there is only one job in the unix queue.
using '/usr/spool/lp/bin/lpr -r -Fl -m%m -U%U -P%p %s'
works fine, but delete

CUPS errors when not using CUPS - Breaks printing
Hi All,
We appear to have a CUPS problem that is breaking our (LPRng)
based printing.
We now have loads of errors of the form:_

Unable to connect to CUPS server localhost - Connection refused

Which versions of CUPS and Samba are you using?
And are you *really* still using the "cupsomatic"-PPD
from Linuxprinting.org for that *PostScript*-printer??

Printing through LPRng
At work I am attempting to set up Wine (20050725 with Sidenet) on an
application server with Red Hat 8.0, and the programs we need are
working well. However, the server has 28 printer queues for printers
scattered around the network, and is running LPRng. I found
documentation about creating printer ports that are tied to specific
queues, but I haven't found any sensible means to make

which print tool: CUPS vs BSD?
Which printing mnechansim works best with Samba? CUPS or BSD? I suspect
that BSD support in Samba is not the greatest.
