Wine and NetBEUI
Hello,
A client of mine has this ancient software called VideoPrinter (working on Win98) and an ancient hardware that connects to the PC through both LAN cable and serial (COM) cable. I decided to give this software a try with wine 0.9.60 running on Slackware 12, kernel 2.6.23.4. The software installs without problems and after adding the appropriate registry keys the COM is recognized. But the

Only Netbeui on the client is it possible ?
HI all !
I've read in a doc, that Samba is talking only with the clients where
Netbios over TCP/IP is running !
I guess it is true, but are there any solution maybe to connect with a
client where only the NETBEUI is the only one installed protocol ?
It would be from DOS, I have a DOS boot disk which is waking up the
Netbeui, and it would be difficult to prepare it to wake up the TCP/IP !

Samba and netbeui
Hello all,
There is still a use for netbeui (non-routed protocol) in the
network. If you are using a VPN client that does not allow split
tunneling, you can still access printers on another local system with
netbeui. I would like to remove the windows system and have my print
shares on my Linux system with Samba.
Is all consideration of netbeui within the Linux/Samba environment
gone?

Samba over IPX/NetBeui
Hello:
Is it possible to run SAMBA over IPX/NetBeui? (I will thank any suggestion)
I hava an small LAN of 3 computers, connected to the Internet through a Cable-modem with DHCP (the cablemodem and the computers are all connected to a hub). The CableModem assigns every computer a random public IP adress, but usually from diferent range (ie: 212.78.x.x, 62.57.x.x, etc), so I cannot get SAMBA or

Samba conf. problem - NetBIOS problem?
Thanks to those who wrote and suggested I remove NetBEUI from my Win95 machines. Here's the next chapter in the story:
First, based on another suggestion, I tried "netstat -a" on the Win95 machine "secretary". It didn't show any kind of traffic on ports 137-139 (even though files WERE being shared at the time).
Next, I tried removing NetBEUI from

Can we still use Samba if routers have netbeui/netbios turned off?
Samba is working perfect on our main subnet, but it won't for any
additional subnets on this domain. We use NT authentication and my system
is an RS/6000. I just found out that our routers for these additional
subnets have netbeui/netbios turned off. Network Admin. said it's because
they're set not to allow broadcasting (and they're not going to start), and
turning

Newbie SAMBA Printing question
Can SAMBA be used on Solaris9/SUN OS 5.8 to emulate a MicroSoft NetBeui client and thereby print to a print server.
I have a printer(ps) that is netbeui only and want to print to it from a Sparc station. lp and lpr are not available by TCP/IP.
Please respond off the board(direct-mail) as I'm sure this is too basic for most users and I did not subscribe to list. I did search the archives and

1.9.17 printing across subnets
I cannot print across my subnets using microsoft win9networking.
I have two subnets 192.168.0 & 192.168.1 of which the linux
running samba server is the router using two ethernet cards .
Workstations on both subnets share their printers from win95.
Win95 machines from both sides of the subnet can telnet to both
ethernet cards on the server and can also ping all machines across

Domain logon from behind proxy...
I think this has been addressed a few times,
but without quite satisfactory results.
I have a private subnet behind an NAT
proxy server (IPMASQ), and a public subnet
on the other side with the NT PDC on the public.
(Using both NetBEUI & TCP/IP). The PDC
will change later, but currently I'm trying to
find out how this all works before I do that.
I'm trying to make a client machine on

Do I need NETBIOS/NETBEUI on windows clients when samba is my PDC
Hi,
I replaced my old Windows NT box runnig as PDC with a Cobolt Qube 3 and
Samba-2.2.2-C1.
Cobalt Linux version is 2.2.16C33_III+VPN.
With the WinNT as PDC, all windows client's in the network had only
TCP/IP protocol installed and
they were able to browse the network and see each other.
With Samba running as PDC, TCP/IP only is not enough to browse the
network. I had to install NETBIOS

MSDOS on my network
Hello,
I am looking for the first time at setting up Linux with Samba as a primary
server on our network. I would like to replace my SCO Unix system and a
Windows box I use to serve MSDOS machines. The MSDOS server seems to be the
stumbling block at this point in my research. I can only run netbEUI on
them as far as I know and Samba seems to only talk on TCP/IP. Do you know
of a solution?

xcopy failures
Hi
I had sent a mail about a week ago regarding a xcopy problem I had. I am
trying to copy an image of an nt workstation from an unixware 2.1.3 server
running samba 1.9.18p8. Initially the client is a dos client, who connects
to the unixware server and downloads files using xcopy. My problem after
copying a certain number of files xcopy fails with path not found. On
further investigation I

Where did I go wrong with this Samba configuration?
I'm just about to give up in despair of getting Samba working on my network. I've browsed through several books, HOWTOs and websites and still can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Before I quit, could someone double check this and maybe spot what I've missed?
First, let me describe my network. Names and IP addresses have been changed to protect the innocent. :-)

SAMBA as PDC - Pls Help!
Hello guys!
I'm newbie in Linux and particularly in SAMBA. You can call me
Microsoft centric but am veering away with MS and so my boss who wishes
for me to establish a SAMBA PDC Server who will authenticate users,
provide file and print services for WInXP and Mac users.
I've read a good number of SAMBA-HOW-TOS but unfortunately i'm not
going anywhere! thus this e-mail...I'm a

How does one use a Netbeui name to ping?
Hello,
If I wished to ping a windows machine from a Linux box _not_ using the
dotted quad address, how can I discover their IP name (using their NetBeui
name)?
* DNS is not running locally, (does it need too?)
* There isn't a local domain, I imagine we're using our ISP's domain name
(we're running the lan segment off a switch connected to a DSL
modem/router)
* Windows and

XP clients cannot find Samba
Hello,
I've set up Samba 3.0.22 on an Ubuntu box for testing purposes. Below
is my smb.conf file. The Samba server, ubuntu, is on the other side
of a Linksys WRTP54G router, serving NAT to my Windows XP clients on
the inside. I've opened port 139 on the router, set up NetBEUI,
placed entries in the clients' hosts & lmhosts files. For some
reason, the clients can logon to

Newbie (groan... !) Client Problem
I've studied the books, searched the list archives, etc. I suspect there is
someone who can just tell me one thing to tweek, so I humbly beg your
advice.
Situation:
I am playing with/learning Linux, intending to replace our two company
Netware servers sometime in the next 6 months. At home, I have an NT4.0/SPC
PDC, an NT4.0/SP6 docked laptop, and an HP server with RH7.1 or 7.2 (2.4.??

password stuff
Greetings All:
I hope everyone had a fun Halloween weekend (I carved 4 big
pumpkins and gave out a bucket full of rubber eyeballs and stuff).
I'm hoping somebody can explain the password behavior I've been
seeing (and a couple of other things). Here's my setup:
An isolated LAN (most clients have modems for dialling out) with
one linux/samba machine (RedHat 4.2, kernel 2.0.30,

samba on linux seems slower than win95 as server
hi folks,
we had a nice old compaq Prosignia300 server - Pentium75 but nice
architecture. It won't serve as a workstation but from what I read
of linux and samba it should have done very well as a server on our
win95 network.
However, after setting all the win95 boxes up with tcp/ip to see the
samba server, and copying all our medical databases across, we found
that the response time

DOS-Client using SAMBA-Server
Hello,
I read some of your latest articles depending on DOS and Samba.
You always mentioned TCP/IP 32, LANMANAGER-Client from IBM and this
mysterios MS Client 3.0.
What I would like to know is, if there is a MS-DOS IP stack
available, which could use a WINS-server and connect to Samba using
NETBEUI over IP ???
I use TCP/IP 32 at the moment for my old windows-clients. Problem is,
I have some
