adduser ?
I installed CentOS 3.3 some time ago and the first thing I did after the install was to run a little script that adds my user plus a few other things. The script adds my user like this USER="ulrik" PASSWD="<mypasswd>" /usr/sbin/adduser $USER -p $PASSWD It seemed to work fine except I couldn't login? I searched Google for reasons why I could only login via ssh as

why was LILO removed from centOS 4.2?
I can't choose LILO as boot loader anymore in the install process? And what is the advantages in GRUP vs. LILO that are so great that LILO has been deleted all together? One big disadvantages when forced to use GRUB is that it is a hassle to make the disks in a RAID1 bootable. https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2005-March/msg05935.html and RAID1 seems pretty useless when it is the

GRUB Bootloader
I installed CentOS 4 Beta on an ATA disk to have a look at it, and on the same computer I have a Windows installation on a SATA disk. In the CentOS installation process it could see the operatingsystem on the SATA and everything looked good, it said something like "Other... /dev/sda" (not quite sure, it looked right so I didn't really take note of it). Now when I want to boot the

quick question on RAID 1
I have 3 disks that I want to setup in a raid 1, my questions is should I setup the 3rd disk as a spare-disk or should I mirror all 3 disks all the time? Will it perform *much* better to only mirror two and have the 3rd as a spare. Is it not safer to mirror all 3 drives all the time ?

RPM package wish list
hello, Does our beloved Centos project have a page where one can request that an RPM package be built, especially for C5? How about alerts when those requests have been satisfied? I know about 3rd party repos like rpmforge, epel, and kbextras. I can search those in YUM. Centos seems to have specialized as a server OS in the past, but my experience is that it is an up and coming

webserver setup
Hi, I have setup a webserver on CentOS 4.5 with NameVirtualHost. Two VirtualHost should be reachable by port 80 from outside, while the third (default) should be only reachable by https from outside but by http from inside. Since all share the same IP firewalling seems to be out of question. So is there a way to restrict that in Apache config? regards, Andreas

Hi, I have applied traffic shaping on firewall running CentOS 4.5. eth1 is the device where I have done traffic shaping. I am now running some monitoring tools such as polltc and tc-graph.pl. They generate graphs. These graphs are updated every 10 seconds. They have been saved on the firewall it self. To view thsese graphs, I have to enable apache on firewall it self. But I do not need to run

Data recovery with superblocks?
It recently occurred to me, as I was partitioning a RAID with fdisk, that when I built the system, I was presented with a graphical utility that "magically" created the partitions. Now, using fdisk, I was reminded of being given superblocks. Although I haven't used data recovery techniques using superblocks, is there a way to retrieve the superblock numbers the OS has assigned

where is ProxyHTMLURLMap for C5 ?
Hello, I'm setting up a reverse proxy in Apache (httpd-2.2.3-11.el5_1.centos.3) I have some pages being served which contain hard-coded names of machines behind the proxy, which obviously do not resolve on the client side. I found an Apache config item called ProxyHTMLURLMap* which supposedly will allow me to re-write these hostnames, but can't seem to find the apache module to install
