Weekly machine password changes (RE: RE: odd: everything SHOULD work... winbind)
No big surprise there. :)
I'm still trying to figure exactly what goes on with the machine
password changing around. Who initiates this? nmbd? The PDC? Who's
notified of this change, and what's going on there.
Perhaps someone can shed some light?

Hello,
First, I have to commend O'Reilly for publishing their excellent book on line.
After reading through Chapter 7 yesterday, I was finally able to get Samba up
and running on my NT domain using encrypted passwords and domain security.
Naturally, something broke yesterday around the time wins was set.
In earlier versions of smb.conf, I

Password Questions & Suggestions
Hello All,
I'm using 1.9.18p5 on Linux serving 95 and NT.
1. If we are currently using password migration to populate my
smbpasswd
file and a user decides to change their password from Win95, is samba
only
supposed to change smbpasswd even though 'unix passwd sync' is set to
true?
2. Since smbpasswd now makes the password changes through smbd, is
it possible to have smbpasswd

Hi all
I have now got a working PDC with successful adding of machines to domain and users can login.
I've created a second PDC on a seperate machine using exactly the same configs with different PDC name.
I can join a machine to the domain, but when you try to log in after joining the domain I get "unknown username or password"
the logs shows that all authentication was

I'm running HP's CIFS/9000 server (a patched Samba 3.0.22, basically),

Just now, someone who runs smbpasswd to create accounts got an error

another nt4 and samba question
Hi, I'm going to scream.
I have a "dell-installed" red hat 7.2 build and I have been attempting to
get it to join my NT4.0 domain with samba... after getting past the old
version of samba that shipped with it and updating to the latest samba
from the samba web site, i still can't join my domain....
Here's the kicker: I CAN JOIN a test domain I set up a few weeks ago,

net user add <username> <password>
Hi,
I'm using Samba 3.0 as a PDC on SuSE Linux 9.1.
I want to add a samba user using the command "net user add <username> <password>". But always when I use this command I receive the message that I have to specify the user. But according to the man page that is the way how to do it...
Has anyone experiences with this command?
Until a few days ago I used smbpasswd -a

Password Question?
I am using Samba 2.2.7 on a RH 7.3 box.
Samba is acting as PDC for 98, 2000, XP clients.
User's passwords are stored in /etc/smbpasswd.
I want to activate password aging so that users are forced to change their
passwords on a regular basis.
Is this possible?

question NIS password authenication
Fellow Samba Folks,
I am trying to setup Samba version 2.2.8a. I would like to
authenticate the users with their NIS password and not use a smbpasswd file
on the Samba Server. I also want to use the encrypt password feature. The
clients will be using XP or Win2K os. Is this possible or do I have to find
a Windows Domain Server. Thanks

win password sync works, smbpasswd fails
Really odd behaviour on a Debian/Squeeze system: when users change
their password from within Windows, everything works fine (i.e.
passdb.tdb is updated and /etc/shadow as well via password sync, the
user can log in on both systems).
When I try to assign a new password via smbpasswd (or create a new
user, which causes the real problem), /etc/shadow is updated
properly (unix logins are possible),

Question about battery test / calibration
The UPS I am writing a driver to has the ability to inform that a variation
in the battery's capacity has changed, and therefore a
test.battery.start.deep or calibration.start has to be performed.
Is there a way -- appart from syslog -- for the driver to inform the
user/administrator that this maintenance action has to be performed?
I would appreciate very much that my previous question if

SOLVED: Win XP Client password change nightmare.
First of all, thanks a lot to John H Terpstra for his kind and useful help.
The problem was something quite simple, the password chat. It really needs
asterisks even at the beginning of each line.
For CentOS (Red-Hat), this works (notice the red asterisks):
password chat = "*New*password*" %n\n "*Retype*password*"
%n\n "*updated*successfully*"
This does not:
